WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"Quick, mobile stopper was top goalie in Canadian junior hockey in 1993-94." (Keith Gave, The Hockey News Future Watch 1995) "The team is convinced Maracle can be an NHL goaltender. The only question is whether he'll play in Detroit, which already has Chris Osgood and Kevin Hodson . Maracle has excellent reflexes and a solid glove hand. "He has been our most valuable player in Adirondack last year and this year," [Detroit general manager Ken] Holland said. "He has almost developed into a franchise-type player at the AHL level. Now it's time to find out what he can do at the next level."" (Chuck Carlton, The Hockey News Future Watch 1998)

FUTURE WATCH 1998
The following are each National Hockey League's organizational rankings of goaltenders, as rated by The Hockey News' selection of scouts. Ratings listed to the left of the player are their ranking within the organization's top ten. A ranking in parenthesis indicates that a player is rated in THN's overall Top Fifty for the year. ANAHEIM Tom Askey : Has had two rocky years as pro, but could be in Anaheim as soon as next season. BOSTON John Grahame : First-year pro probably wishes he hadn't left school early. Has played reasonably well for AHL's worst team. Paxton Schafer : Has been outstanding in East Coast League, but can't seem to get much time with Providence. BUFFALO Mika Noronen : The Sabres raised eyebrows when they drafted an unknown goaltender from Finland. After all, they seemed secure at the position with Dominik Hasek and Steve Shields . But Noronen carried Finland to the gold medal in the 1998 World Junior Championship. He was picked as a second team all-star at the competition and got rave reviews from most of the scouts because of his quickness and composure under fire. Noronen was virtually invisible coming up through the system, largely because he played just five games in 1996-97. But the Sabres first started tracking him at youth tournaments for 15- and 16-year-olds in Europe and North America. CALGARY Jean-Sebastien Giguere : Giguere, one of a long line of goaltending prospects to emerge from the Quebec League, is the prototypical NHL goaltender. He's big and strong, plays a butterfly style and moves well laterally for a big man. GM Al Coates describes Giguere as the "whole package, mentally and physically." The Flames consider Giguere a low-maintenance goaltender, someone who knows how to play his position, understands the timetable he's on and what it will take to move up to the NHL.

Atlanta hockey:
New and old
The date was June 25, 1997, when hockey fans in Atlanta breathed a deep sigh of relief that was almost audible in the Southland. After all, those Atlantans had been holding their collective breath since their previous hockey team, the Flames, moved on to Calgary at the end of the 1979-80 season. The new team was nicknamed the Thrashers after the Georgia State bird. The team?s colors are a delightful mixture of Capitol copper, Georgia bronze, Peachtree gold, Atlanta midnight blue and Thrasher ice blue. Atlanta?s new hockey home is the magnificent Philips Arena, replacing the since-destroyed Omni, which housed the Flames for eight wonderful seasons from 1972-73 to 1979-80.
