NASCAR impounds Stewart's car
Saturday, March 29, 2003 By The Associated Press Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart's car was impounded Friday because it didn't meet specifications, a punishment never before handed out by NASCAR. Stewart, known as the bad boy of the sport, was forced to use his backup car at the opening practice for Sunday's Samsung/Radio Shack 500 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. Moving into the backup prepared hurriedly by his team, Stewart qualified 22nd in the 43-car field. "The cars all look the same from where I'm sitting," Stewart said. "I've got three things I'm in control of: a steering wheel, the shifter and the pedals. All our cars are good, whether they're primary or a backup." Trying to match the right car with the track, Stewart had never used this particular vehicle. But the Joe Gibbs Racing entry failed inspection because it didn't meet the exact specifications for "the area around the back of the car, back window to back deck," NASCAR president Mike Helton said. "We decided to impound the car instead of letting them cut it up and try to fix it, if they wanted to," Helton said.

Jeter dislocates shoulder
Yankees' star goes on DL, out at least two weeks
Tuesday, April 1, 2003 By The Associated Press TORONTO — Derek Jeter, the heart and soul of the Yankees, was knocked out of New York's opener Monday night with a dislocated left shoulder after a violent collision at third base with Toronto catcher Ken Huckaby. Jeter will go on the disabled list and be sidelined for at least two weeks, New York manager Joe Torre said after the Yankees' 8-4 win. But the extent of the injury wasn't immediately clear. "This isn't getting hit by a pitch or spraining an ankle," Jeter said. "Hopefully, there's nothing wrong." Jeter was injured in the third inning on a headfirst slide into third base. "There's nothing broken, but they still have to take an MRI," Jeter said. Jeter was down for more than 10 minutes, writhing in pain and surrounded by worried teammates. He was helped onto a cart by trainers Gene Monahan and Steve Donohue, strapped in place sitting upright and taken off the field — his head bent, his face dripping with sweat. "It hurts. I can't really describe it," Jeter said. "The worst part is getting it back in."

AHL Quick HitsApril 13, 2003 CALDER CUP UPDATE:
Jean-Sebastien Aubin made 37 saves and Micki DuPont and Kris Beech scored third-period power play goals, helping Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finish off a two-game sweep of Utah with a 2-1 win on Saturday night. The Penguins scored four of their seven goals in the series with the man advantage, and now advance to face either Grand Rapids or Houston in the conference quarterfinals.
Denis Hamel netted a goal and two assists and Chris Taylor scored twice as Rochester bounced back for a 6-3 over Milwaukee in Game 2 last night. The Amerks took a 3-0 lead in the first period and held on, as the Admirals tried to rally behind Martin Erat’s second straight two-goal effort. The hard-fought series will be decided tonight in Game 3 (8:12 CT, 9:12 ET).
Steve Valiquette made 27 saves as Bridgeport became the first road team to win a conference quarterfinal game this postseason with a 2-1 decision in Manchester last night. Jeremy Adduono and Trent Hunter provided the offense for the Sound Tigers, while Pavel Rosa scored the lone Monarchs goal. Game 2 is this afternoon (4:05 ET) at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
Game 3 between Portland and Manitoba this evening (6:05 ET, 5:05 CT) will send one team to Providence for a conference quarterfinal beginning Wednesday. A 38-save performance by Second Team AHL All-Star Maxime Ouellet on Friday night helped the Pirates avoid elimination. Portland hasn’t won a playoff series since 1998; the Moose won their 2002 qualifying series with a 2-OT win in Game 3.

Point-blank range for Maracle, Wolves
March 17, 2003 BY JOE GODDARD STAFF REPORTER
It will be a Maracle if the Wolves successfully defend the Calder Cup. Goalie Norm Maracle, staring down the Western Conference co-leading Grand Rapids Griffins, made 20 saves Sunday at Allstate Arena for a 1-0 victory that helped the Wolves move into second place ahead of San Antonio in the American Hockey League's West Division. "Having my mom, sister and brother-in-law here [from Belleville, Ontario] has really helped,'' said Maracle, who has won his last seven starts, totaling 171 saves. "I'm nervous enough before games, so knowing they're here calms me down a bit.'' Wolves 1 Griffins The teams were scoreless through two periods, but Simon Gamache took care of that 50 seconds into the third. He flipped in the rebound of his own shot off Griffins goalie Joey MacDonald after taking a centering pass across the crease from Rob Brown. The Wolves (35-24-7-4) thought they had another goal moments later when Brown appeared to convert, but officials ruled he kicked in the puck.

The Sporting News Ray, Look back at all the players you have commented on for the past eight years. You state many are still developing. Patrik Stefan has only played two years! After switching to left wing at the end of the season, things changed a lot. Hello, somebody! Just wait. We have a late bloomer if his melon hangs in there. Look out, dude, he will be incredible! Thrashers in Stanley Cup finals 2006, for sure 2007. Todd Holubitsky ***Todd: Stefan has gotten better each year, but sorry, he hasn't posted the numbers yet to prove he's a quality first-overall pick. Compare him to Vincent Lecavalier; that should be fair. Both were first overall picks, both play on weak teams in the weak Southeast Division. Stefan was the first overall pick in 1999. In his second season, he had 10 goals and 21 assists in 66 games. That's a step up from his rookie season of 1998-99. Lecavalier, No. 1 in 1998, posted these numbers in his second season 25 goals, 42 assists in 80 games. That's significantly better, isn't it? Last season, Lecavalier had 23 goals and 28 assists in 68 games and that's still better than Stefan.
