San Jose then deals Hackett and Jeff Jillson to Boston for Kyle McLaren and a fourth-round 2004 pick. Sundstrom has been struggling this season with two goals and 10 assists (minus-4) in 47 games. Trading Niklas breaks up the "best third line in hockey," a major reason why San Jose won the Pacific Division last year. Without this line producing, changes needed to be made. Rookie Jonathan Cheechoo (5 goals, 4 assists, 31 games) might take Niklas's spot. Defenseman Jeff Jillson was demoted to Cleveland on Dec 8. Jillson scored five goals and 13 assists as a rookie in 2001-2002, but did not score a goal in 26 games with the Sharks this season. While he excelled on the power play last year, Jeff has struggled with turnovers and poor decisions with the puck. Boston gains a huge prospect (6-3, 220 lbs.), but Jeff needs some time in the minors to regain his confidence and shore up his defensive zone play. Jillson is adept at keeping the puck in the zone on the PP, and is always getting his shots on net through traffic.

Is it us or has Kyle McLaren stock increased dramatically even though he has not laced up the blades at all this season. Never fleet of foot, McLaren was never going to be confused with the next coming of Ray Bourque . Couple that with the fact that he was often injured and well he’s a good player but not a great one from our perspective. Tanguay appears to have lost almost all confidence as coach Hartley has moved him off of Sakic’s line and he is toiling away with Steven Reinprecht on the Avs second line. Martin Lapointe is back to his old ways: 30-40 points rather than his 30+ goal season two years ago. But it’s not his fault that Bruins GM Mike O’Connell over-paid when he signed him to a 4 year, $20 million deal (we’d sign too). Skoula may develop into the best player in this rumored swap. Merchandise December 23, 2002 Scott Brattly Rumours – December 23, 2002 With just two days before Christmas, and the league’s big “trade embargo” in full effect, this doesn’t mean that teams are not still trying to position themselves for first thing in the New year. With that, we peruse the latest from the rumor mill. As we reported in the Eastern Conference updates , the recently winless in 6 games Boston Bruins are feeling the heat. But this recent hiccup is more symptomatic of some serious problems for the Bruins. Their attendance has been less than that of a team with 19-9-4-1 record. Then, there is the absence of a battered Sergei Samsonov , who went under the knife this past weekend, and hopes to be back by the playoffs. And finally, there is the mediocre play of the Bruins netminders. All of which have got to be a big concern for GM O’Connoll. But, it’s not like the Bruins do not have an asset to deal. Kyle McLaren remains in hockey hell (aka limbo), but the funny thing is, is that that Bruins could really use a guy just like him on their rather average blue-line. A bigger problem is that the Bruins are asking way too much for the often injured rear-guard. As brutal as
