McLaren back in business
By Bill Burt
Eagle-Tribune Sports Editor MIDDLETON Kyle McLaren said it a few times to his wife Helga. "Kyle McLaren of the San Jose Sharks. ... Kyle McLaren of the San Jose Sharks." It didn't sound right. At least not three hours after it was official that McLaren was finally traded from the Boston Bruins to the San Jose Sharks in a three-team deal. The Bruins also traded a fourth-round draft pick in 2004 and received defenseman Jeff Jillson, the former University of Michigan star. "Helga looked at me and said, 'You better do well. You better not mess this up,' " said the 25-year-old McLaren. The only place McLaren can go these days, besides West, is up. After 31/2 months of practicing with Lawrence's Valley Junior Warriors, coached by ex-Merrimack College great Andy Heinze, he was long overdue for a return to the National Hockey League. McLaren went through the gamut of emotions. He was happy, excited, energized and, yes, a little bit scared. "It's been awhile," said McLaren. "I'm not afraid of playing. I just want to go out there and show them I'm worth it. They really wanted me. And that feels good. They are a team that needs a little boost to make the playoffs. That's what I hope I'll bring to them ... I mean, us."

Notebooks Inside the NHL: Penguins should jump into McLaren bidding Sunday, September 22, 2002 By Dejan Kovacevic, Post-Gazette Sports Writer Offer all 30 of the NHL's general managers a chance to produce their fantasy classified ad, and it doubtless would read something like this ... HELP WANTED: Defenseman. 6 feet 4, 225 pounds or larger. Age 25 or younger, but must have spent every year in NHL since age 18. Minimum requirements: Career plus rating, average of 20 points per season, 400 or more lifetime penalty minutes, checks that register 6.0 on Richter scale. Nice guys need not apply. Of course, such an ad could be placed daily in every newspaper across the globe and never draw a response. That's because no company in its right mind would let such an employee get away. Unless that employee decides he wants to work elsewhere.

January 23, 2003 McLaren knows way to San Jose;
B's trade for Hackett, Jillson By Kirk Luedeke
Kyle McLaren (Photo: Kellie Landis/Allsport) Click here to check out our updated Bruins Prospects Depth Chart (including this season's draft picks) The old saying goes something like this: Good things come to those who wait. Hackett, 34, was the second selection (34th overall) of the New York Islanders in 1987, and after a fine junior career with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League, turned pro with the Springfield Indians and Islanders during the 1988-89 season. Shortly after the 1998-99 season, Hackett, Alain Nasreddine and Eric Weinrich were dealt to the Canadiens for Jocelyn Thibault and Brad Brown. Although Hackett has struggled with injuries over the past several seasons with Montreal, he was off to a great start, playing 18 games for the Habs and posting a 2.54 GAA and .926 save percentage despite posting a sub-.500 record of 7-8-2 on a poor defensive club. Jillson, 22, is a native of Woonsocket, R.I., and was the 14th overall selection in the 1999 draft after an excellent freshman season with Red Berenson in Ann Arbor. Jillson turned pro with the Sharks organization after his junior season in 2001, when he netted 10 goals and 30 points in 43 games.

> The game in Chicago was ugly. No excuse for this team to be flat, where's the desperation? Brad Stuart and Kyle McLaren are two young, big, talented defensemen holding out and available. DW has to make a big move to take the next step. Every good young team does at some point. The longer Curt has to rely on Tremblay or Kaberle to clear the crease the more 30 and40 shot games there will be. I still say our forwards are good (one center short of great). Blueline needs help. Goaltending needs a mercy killing.

Defenseman Kyle McLaren hasn't played this season and requested a trade.
By DAMIAN CRISTODERO, Times Staff Writer
published October 23, 2002 The Lightning apparently has at least a passing interest in disgruntled Bruins defenseman Kyle McLaren. It is believed Tampa Bay general manager Jay Feaster and Boston GM Mike O'Connell have spoken, though nothing appears imminent and there are numerous factors the Lightning would have to consider before a deal could get done. McLaren's agent, Neil Abbott, said Tuesday he could not confirm Tampa Bay's interest but added, "Certainly, Tampa is a great place, and the hockey team is playing super. It's a place any hockey player should take a look at." McLaren, 25, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound restricted free agent, has not played this season and requested a trade after turning down Boston's qualifying offer of $1.755-million, which he made last season. Abbott has said his client is looking for a "change of scenery."

is scratching an itch he's had since he hung up his skates in 2001 - an itch to work with the Bruins again.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Lest anyone think that No. 77 has returned to play a role in the management of FleetCenter's NHL tenants, Bourque made it clear that his new job as a host/consultant with the arena's Premium Club staff is a part-time opportunity separate from hockey operations.
"[Hockey] is something that's been a part of me for most of my life," said Bourque, "and I've always hoped some day that I'd get back into it. This isn't the Bruins, but it gets me back into the building."
FleetCenter's Premium Club is located on levels five and six of the arena and includes 108 suites, 2,400 club seats and two full-service restaurants.
