Summarized from PBFC newsletter
  • John Namestnikov has been staying with Pavel at his mansion since being called up from the Canuck's farm club in Syracuse in late January. John's family remains behind in Syracuse, not knowing how long his stay will be with the Vancouver Canucks.
  • In the last week of March, Pavel's mom, Tatyana, arrived from Russia for a four week visit and is also taking residence at the mansion. She attended the March 29 home game against the Los Angeles Kings and in the 5-2 win, Pavel recorded his first goal in nine games.
  • A recent issue of Vogue Magazine had a small article about 'Russian hockey players' picturing Detroit Red Wing Sergei Fedorov and Canuck Pavel Bure. The article stated that 'the hockey jersey is about to replace the backward baseball cap as the sports fashion item of choice, helped by a few incredibly sexy imported Russian players like ruby-lipped Pavel Bure of the Vancouver Canucks'.
  • The March issue of 'Becketts Hockey Monthly' has listed Pavel Bure's cards as the hottest cards this month.

Conference Finals - vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

[The Vancouver Sun] VS. CONFERENCE FINALS It was a match made in heaven. Lutusland versus Hogtown. The West Coast folk against the Centre of the Universe. The San Jose Sharks were eliminated by the Toronto "Centre of the Universe" Maple Leafs in the seventh game, so Vancouver drew their Eastern rivals. There was truly little rivalry between the two teams; the last time they had met was in the 1922 playoffs, when Vancouver was still the Millionaires, and Toronto was the St. Pats. But still, all of Canada was watching. Rosie DiManno of The Toronto Star and Denny Boyd of The Vancouver Sun had an old brouhaha of words in the papers. DiManno described Vancouver as a "blonde bimbo" of a town. Both newspapers ran Why I Hate Vancouver/Toronto contests. Being that the Leafs played in the Western Conference despite being in the outermost East, there was a bit of travelling to do. 3000 miles separated the two cities. The Eastern Conference finalists, New Jersey and New York, had only a 30 minute bus ride between the two arenas. Toronto had finished the season with 98 points compared to Vancouver's 85, so the Maple Leafs took the home ice advantage for the opening two games. Their main trouble behind solving Kirk McLean, would be to contain the Adams-Linden-Bure tandem. The line had already produced 19 goals in the Canucks playoff season, 46% of the Canucks total 41 goals vs. Dallas and Calgary. Maple Leafs coach Pat Burns decided to counter the Linden unit with Peter Zezel, Bill Berg and Mark Osborne.

Kirk McLean Trade

[kirkmclean.com] To Carolina: LW Martin Gelinas, G Kirk McLean
To Vancouver: LW Geoff Sanderson, G Sean Burke, D Enrico Ciccone Trade with Hurricanes may start whirlwind of moves for Canucks
by Mike Brehm
USA Today The trade that brought goaltender Sean Burke, winger Geoff Sanderson and defenseman Enrico Ciccone to the Vancouver Canucks is likely only the first step. ``We're very excited with the first step we were able to make,'' senior vice president of hockey operations Steve Tambellini said. ``Are we complete yet? I'd say no, we're not.'' The Canucks sent goaltender Kirk McLean and winger Martin Gelinas to the Carolina Hurricanes early Saturday. McLean and Gelinas arrived Sunday night in Carolina. Burke played well in his debut Saturday, a 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. The three were told of the deal after 1 a.m., flew to Vancouver and arrived at the arena about three hours before game time. ``You could see the fatigue set in,'' Tambellini said. ``I just told them that they did a terrific job. .'' Tambellini is excited about landing Sanderson, who spent time Saturday on the Mark Messier and Trevor Linden lines. The two-time 40-goal scorer has seven this season. ``He's 25 with a long career ahead of him,'' Tambellini said. ``His consistency, aside from the first half of this year, speaks for itself. He has an NHL shot and is very explosive with his speed.'' Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford knows that Sanderson will get back on track but said he likes Gelinas' versatility.

    Playoff Hockey
Setting: The National Hockey League, circa the printing of the game.
Game Play: Both interesting and true to the sport. Each player chooses six cards to represent his team. You need a Center, two Defensemen, a Right Wig, A Left Wing, and a Goalie. You then lay those out on the table in the starting positions for a hockey game (very nice illustrations in the rulebook, by the way). The goal is to get possession of the hockey puck, skate your team forward and shoot for a goal. Play ends when one person runs out of cards. At that time, whoever has the most points wins.
This game does use custom dice to resolve actions, but even though I personally hate games which require additional materials, I didn't mind this as much because the dice were clever. These were six-sided dice with two blank sides, a puck, a whistle and an NHL logo. Whenever you are trying to shoot, you roll dice equal to your card's SHOOT stat. Count the number of pucks and NHL logos. If the logo matches the shooter's team, it counts double. The Goalie rolls dice equal to their BLOCK stat. If you beat the goalie, you score a point. Pretty simple and very quick.
Other than that, all you really need to figure out is what to do with the cards. Each player has a hand of three cards. They must draw one and play one per turn. The cards will allow you to SKATE a player forward so they can take a shot (or if they don't have the puck, they add +1 die to the player who has it), SHOOT, PASS or STEAL. Of course there are actually a lot of variations. One card might say: "OFFENSE: SKATE wingman, PASS puck to CENTER, SHOT at +1". If you don't have a useful card in your hand, you may discard any card to SKATE or SHOOT (but only if you have the puck). One last thing: they don't include a puck counter, so they recommend you use a nickel.

NHL HOCKEY CARDS FOR SALE OR TRADE Hello, and welcome to the Lamarre hockey cards page. This page has been significantly reduced in length because I have many other card pages to maintain, and most of the people who write saying they are interested in buying hockey cards are not serious about buying. I love watching hockey and I enjoy card collecting, but I don't have the time to deal with people who request a lengthy response to their emails (complete lists and descriptions of players' cards)then I never hear from them again. When people write to me asking for X-file cards or racing cards, for example, I almost always end up selling or trading with them. No so with hockey card collectors. So, for a complete list of any player's cards, email me, but Please only if you really intend to purchase cardseven just one card is fine. I HAVE FOIL INSERTS OF MOST PLAYERS, AND ABOUT 200 ROOKIE CARDS.
SINCE I OWN VERY FEW MEMORIBILIA OR SIGNATURE CARDS, I HAVE LISTED THEM BELOW. Also for sale: unopened MARIO LEMIEUX figure with ice base, 2001 McFarlane Toys Series 2:
