Born: February 26, 1957 New York City, New York
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Right The former Boston College player returned to Boston when he signed as a free agent on September 13, 1995. The highest scoring American born player in NHL history, is hard working sniper, that paid as much attention to his defensive assignments, as scoring goals. Raised in the tough streets on New York's Hell's Kitchen, Joe and his brother Brian took what they learned playing street hockey, and parlayed it into successful NHL careers. Joe scored 51 goals with Salt Lake City of the IHL in the 80-81 season, and 51 goals with Calgary of the NHL in the 88-89 season, joining Brett Hull as the only players who tallied 50 goals in both the minors and NHL during the decade of the 80's. Joe's season in Boston was plagued by injuries. A serious neck injury took Joe out of the line-up in December, and shortly after his return, a torn ACL sent him to the sidelines for the duration of the campaign. In the off season Joe signed with Pittsburgh as a Free Agent, and in March scored goal number 500 of his career, becoming the first American born player to do so, and along with Jari Kurri, only the second non-Canadian player to score 500 goals in the NHL. Joe will retire as the leading American born scorer in the history of the NHL. On November 13, 2000, Joe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

MERRIMACK DEFEATS BOSTON UNIVERSITY, 3-2
Merrimack College goalie Joe Exter turned aside 30 shots and Lucas Smith, Nick Parillo, and Vincent Clevenger each scored a goal to lead the Warriors to a 3-2 win over Boston University in Hockey East action at B.U. on Friday night.
The win kept Merrimack’s hopes for a post-season playoff bid alive. The Warriors, who closed out their regular-season with a 14-18-4 record overall and a 7-14-3 mark in Hockey East, are currently in eighth place, three points ahead of UMass/Amherst. UMass/Amherst is playing at New Hampshire on Friday night and will host the Wildcats on Saturday night. A loss either night would give Merrimack the eighth and final spot in the playoffs.
In the meantime, B.U. slipped to an overall record of 13-17-3 and a 9-11-3 mark in the league. The Terriers, who close out their regular-season on Sunday, are currently tied with UMass/Lowell for fifth place in the league. UMass/Lowell, which closes out its regular-season on Saturday at Northeastern, needs a win to be assured of fifth place, which will leave the Terriers in sixth place.
The league’s post-season playoffs begin next weekend.

Matthews Arena (Boston, MA) Team Final Boston University (12-6-2, 6-4-0 HEA) Northeastern (6-9-2, 1-7-1 HEA)
Despite outshooting Boston University, 31-26, Northeastern couldn't find a chink in Terrier goalie Sean Fields armor and were shut out, 4-0, in front of 4120 spectators in Hockey East action at Matthews Arena. "Sean Fields played great," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "I thought our guys played better as the game went on, but we just couldn't get the puck past him." The Huskies (6-9-2, 1-7-1 HEA) outshot the 11th-ranked Terriers (12-6-2, 6-4 HEA), 26-13, over the final two periods and went 0-for-5 on the power play. After each team weathered a first period power play, BU defensman Jekabs Redlihs shovelled the puck to an open Brian Collins in front of the net and Collins knocked it under Husky goalie Keni Gibson eight minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. The teams traded shots for the next several minutes of play. BU's Frantisek Skladany got the puck from a ricochet off the glass in the 11th minute of play, but his wide open shot rang off the post. Husky freshman Mike Morris had a great opportunity a few minutes later as he took a point-blank shot in front of the BU goal but Fields blocked it. The Terriers took a 2-0 advantage at 16:12 when BU's Mark Mullen's shot was deflected by Gibson and went to a wide open David VanderGulik, who was able to find the net as Gibson was out of position. BU held the 2-0 difference for the remainder of the period.

Walter Brown Arena (Boston, MA) Team Final Northeastern (6-10-2, 1-8-1 HEA) Boston University (13-6-2, 7-4-0 HEA)
The Huskies suffered their second setback in-a-row at the hands of crosstown rival Boston University, 6-1, in Hockey East action in front of 2,562 fans at Walter Brown Arena. Senior captain Mike Ryan rifled in a slap shot from the top of the circle at 15:26 of the second period. The power-play goal snapped the Huskies 99-minute scoreless streak against BU netminder Sean Fields, who shut out NU the previous night with 31 saves for a 4-0 victory. Ryan's goal was his ninth goal against the Terriers in 14 career games. Ryan's goal cut the BU deficit to 4-1, but the Terriers opened up the third period with two goals from Dan Spang and John Sabo, just 17 seconds apart, in the third minute of play to open up the game. There was a sense of deja vu of night before, as the Huskies were outshot, 12-4, in the first period en route to a 2-0 lead. Saturday night, BU outshot NU, 13-5, en route to a 2-0 advantage. "You don't want to go through six periods and score two goals," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "We're done with our non-league schedule and we have to get better. We had 14 freshmen and sophomores in the line-up and we did see some good things. We'll continue to make improvements and we'll be better in February than we are now."
