# 7 - Joe Mullen - The Glory Days

Date: Wednesday, January 15, 2003
Location: Island Sports Center, Neville Township, PA
Teams: CHE North (Champions) vs. CHE South (Challengers) Winner: CHE South Final Score: South (9), North (2) MVP: Jordan Spallone (#15, St. Vincent College)
Over 350-people packed the Island Sports Center on Wednesday, January 15, 2003, to witness the South Division defeat the North Division 9-2 in the 4th Annual CHE All-Star Game. After falling behind early in the game, the North scored four unanswered goals to take control of the contest. Jordan Spallone of Saint Vincent College was named the All Star Game MVP thanks to his three goals and three assists. The line of Spallone, Tom Ward (St. Vincent), and Mike Nestico (Penn State West), were responsible for five of the nine South goals. All three are former teammates from Greensburg Central Catholic High School. The game started off well for the North Division, as Jeff Cacia (IUP-DII) scored on assists from Roy King (Allegheny) and Mike Gresko (IUP-DII). Nestico evened the score seven minutes later, and Spallone added a goal three minutes later. The North took the lead for good eight minutes into the second period, when Devin Fell of Carnegie Mellon scored. It turned out to be the game winning goal.

Savard, Mullen enter hockey hall
By The Associated Press
TORONTO Denis Savard has a suggestion to improve play in the NHL make the rinks smaller.
He believes that would bring more goals, with shooters on top of goalies and more shots flying at the net.
"I think it would help, I really do," Savard said yesterday after putting on his Hall of Fame blazer and ring.
Savard was inducted last night with Joe Mullen, two of the best offensive sparkplugs in the NHL the last 20 years.
Also entering were Walter Bush Jr., an executive who spurred hockey development in the United States; Jim Matheson, the Edmonton Journal writer who chronicled the exploits of the Oilers since their founding; and Bob Miller, the voice of the Los Angeles Kings. The 39-year-old Savard had 473 goals and 865 assists in a 17-year NHL career that included 10 years in Chicago and a championship season in Montreal in 1993. He retired in 1997 and is now an assistant with the Blackhawks. Savard excelled at maneuvering in close quarters. He cringes at the thought of players being bounced off the stiff boards and seamless glass used in most arenas today.

Wolves Announce 2002-03 Opening Day Roster Jim Lafo
NORTHFORD, CT - The Connecticut Wolves Junior Hockey Club recently announced their Opening Day Roster, which clearly showed a very new team. Remember the Wolves had 10 players go off to college from last year's team. Fortunately, the Wolves return 12 players from last year's team and that should provide a solid base from which to build a new squad. The returning players from last year's team are: Defense: Rob Delfranco (East Haven, CT); Alex Prebola (N. Branford, CT); Jon Gineo (New Britain, CT); Doug Preston (East Haven, CT); Forwards: Jim Lafo (West Haven, CT); Ryan Pospisil (Monroe, CT); Dave Pazzaglia (Oakdale, CT); Mark Black (Edmonton, Alb.); Chris Manemeit (Durham, CT); Dana Calderone (Bronx, NY); Robert Wood (West Haven, CT); Dave Volfson (New Rochelle, NY). Added to the mix are some exciting players from throughout Connecticut and the US. On the local front, the Wolves were excited and proud to add All-State, West Haven High School teammates Brandon Fanelli, a forward and goaltender Mark Heffernan. Coming from Trinity Pawling HS and from Bethel, CT is forward Ryan Keenan. Rob Delfranco
"We feel like we have put together an exciting collection of talent and potential," says Coach Luke Galvin. "Our coaching staff enjoys the challenge of teaching the kids the game and the intensity it takes to truly take advantage of all it has to offer each of our players. We are very different than last years team, a little younger, but hopefully this group can grow over the next 2 years and make itself into a dominating team as they grow together."

Click below to view TSN's report on the induction of Denis Savard, Joe Mullen and Walter Bush Jr. into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Two American hockey greats have received hall passes. Joe Mullen and Walter Bush Jr. were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame along with Denis Savard in a special ceremony on November 13 in Toronto. Mullen grew up playing roller hockey on the mean streets of Hell's Kitchen in New York City. As a professional, he scored 502 goals and 561 assists in 17 NHL seasons. He continues to hold the record for the most points ever by an American-born NHLer. Mullen was a part of three Stanley Cup winning teams: one with Calgary and two with Pittsburgh. Walter Bush Jr. was inducted into the Hall of Fame under the builder category. Bush, an American, was instrumental in building hockey in the United States. Among other things, he helped bring a professional hockey to Minnesota in the first phase of NHL expansion in 1967. He also assisted in the merging of the Cleveland Barons with the North Stars in the late 70's. Over the years, Bush has been active with the U.S.'s international hockey teams. In 1973, he was awarded the Lester Patrick Award for his outstanding service to hockey in the U.S.

Not only did he prove he could play at the highest level, but he made the NHL's All-Rookie team and was runner-up to Steve Larmer for the Calder Trophy with 19 goals and 66 points. The following year, he took it up another notch, becoming one of the few NHL defensemen to score 30 goals in a season. He would continue to post huge point totals and became the all-time leading American-born scorer when he passed Joe Mullen with his 1,066th point on March 13, 1999. Housley had his best NHL seasons with Winnipeg from 1990-93, a three-year span that saw him score 64 goals and 259 points. He was traded to St. Louis in 1993 and over the next nine seasons would play for five different teams. Although his offensive numbers diminished, he returned to All-Star status with Calgary in 1999-2000.
