CULLEN UPDATE
Johnny Cullen, LCS Hockey hero and the idol of millions from eight to eighty, is still skating for the Cleveland Lumberjacks of the IHL. At last check, Cullen has two goals and nine points in six games. It should be mentioned that seven of those points came in one game, but that's really neither here nor there. COLORADO COMING BACK
Last issue in the ol' More Stuff column it was mentioned how Washington has been devastated by injuries this season. Well, Colorado isn't too far behind. In an unbelievable rash of bad luck, the Avalanche blue line has been rendered unrecognizable thanks to injuries to Adam Foote, Alexei Gusarov, Sylvain Lefebvre, Jon Klemm, Eric Messier, and Wade Belak. For complete details on the situation, check out Greg D'avis' feature article elsewhere in the issue. Yet despite all the grief on defense, Colorado has rallied to an 8-9-2 record. That may not sound like much, but take away the 0- 4-0 start and the Avalanche are 8-5-2 in their past 15 games. Considering the injuries, that's really quite remarkable. They're currently only three points behind Edmonton for the division lead. The two main reasons for the turnaround are that Patrick Roy is once again stopping pucks and Peter Forsberg has started scoring goals. But don't overlook what GM Pierre Lacroix has done to turn the tide.

Skates with Bruins to assess probability
By Karen Russo, Associated Press writer
WILMINGTON More than halfway into his first team practice since retiring from the Bruins in 1996, former forward Cam Neely received the puck and took the shot on net.
Clank. No matter that the puck hit the crossbar.
Or that Neely breathed heavier, weighed more and skated slower than in years past.
Cam Neely was back on the ice and that was enough.
Two years after the four-time NHL All Star prematurely retired from the game at 31, after scoring 395 goals and 299 assists in his 13-year-career, Neely was on the ice with his old team yesterday seeing if he could overcome the degenerative hip condition that sidelined his career.
So far, so good.
"I wish that my lungs felt as good as my hip," he said soon after leaving the ice at the Ristuccia Center, wearing a sweaty Bruins practice jersey.
He always wondered if he could come back.
After the 45-minute practice session, Neely recalled how the pain was once so unbearable he couldn't sleep.
Neely's return follows intensive work with a physical therapist who is helping to lengthen the muscles and tendons around his hip and break down some of the scar tissue surrounding his hip socket.

More headlines No. 23: CAM NEELY He was a power player CAM NEELY 344 goals with Bruins By Barbara Matson, Globe Staff, 12/09/99 am Neely was such a force in Boston in the late 1980s that Bruins general manager Harry Sinden was forced to think up another name for the position Neely played. Sinden called him a power forward. Neely was all about power: power to score, power to punch, power to punish. It was not just what he did - score goals, hit opponents, dig in the corners - but how he did it. The rugged right wing, a three-time 50-goal scorer for the Bruins, used the power of his personality to turn on Boston hockey fans like no player since Bobby Orr. His career ended prematurely in 1996 when sore knees and an arthritic hip forced him to retire at 31. But in 13 years in the NHL, Neely scored 452 total goals (344 for the Bruins) in 819 total games, was named a second-team All-Star four times, and won the Masterton Trophy, awarded to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. All of those factors helped Neely rank No. 23 on the Globe's list of the top New England sports figures of the century.

These may not be, by definition, the worst roster moves ever made, but they were the ones that affected us on a personal level. These are the events that caused and still cause us to sit on our bar stools and lament the cruel twists of life. CNNSI.com Producer Robert Rodriguez has to hand it to Canucks fans. Cam Neely for Barry Pederson ? They've made their share of bad moves, but somehow the Canucks manage to claw their way to the Stanley Cup finals every now and again. Of course, it wasn't the Canucks' fault they lost out on Gil Perreault , but who told them to trade Trevor Linden , bypass Jaromir Jagr and Keith Tkachuk in the '90 draft or select any one of a number of stiffs over the years?

There were several minor problems. They had at least a 60 year difference in age. And, half the women who followed the Bruins at that time were also in love with him. Plus, Cam had recently became engaged to another woman. My mother noted that but that did not bother her in the least. Finally, my mother had never met Cam Neeley. But, no none of this mattered. She would talk incessantly about her Darling Cam was clearly her Number 2 sports heart throb of all time with only Her Teddy (Williams) surpassing her Darling Cam.
