GATES ORLANDO Gaetano or Gates as he's usually known as was a small and smart center who never quite got the chance to establish himself in the NHL, instead he went on to become one of the better players over in Europe.
Some even called him the Mark Messier and Bobby Clarke of European hockey.
Gates started playing hockey at the age of nine and was a very promising player as a little kid in Montreal. He never had the size but he was so smart and shifty that he always was among the better players. As a junior he played for the Montreal Jr. Canadiens (QMJHL) where he was among the best players on the team. Instead of further play in the QMJHL he went to study at the Providence College. After his first college season he was drafted by Buffalo 164th overall in 1981. If it hadn't been for his size then he most likely would have been drafted in the first two rounds. Instead of becoming professional Gates opted to finish his business management degree.
Gates played exceptionally well during his four seasons at Providence (coached by Lou Lamoriello who later became New Jersey's GM) and scored 210 points (93+117) in 129 games. He was even a finalist for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award given to the top US collegiate player. Only days after he had played his last game for Providence he dressed for the Rochester Americans (AHL) and finished the 1983-84 AHL season with 15 points in 11 games.

Associated Press Feb. 12, 1998 Nagano, Japan Jan Benda scored two goals off rebounds in the third period and goaltender Olaf Kolzig stopped 31 shots to give Germany a 4-2 victory over Slovakia today and ninth place in the Olympic ice hockey tournament. The Germans were dominated and outshot by the Slovaks 29-9 through two periods and trailed 2-1 entering the third. But Benda drew Germany even at 2:51 by tapping in a loose puck after Lars Brueggeman's initial shot. He scored the game-winner 4:08 later by lifting the last of three successive shots over Slovakian goaltender Igor Murin. Mirko Luedemann ensured the victory with a third goal midway through the period on a breakaway. Jozef Dano gave Slovakia the lead with 2:09 left in the first period.

MILAN AND ICE HOCKEY: TWO DESTINIES THAT OFTEN CROSS by Paolo Pulici (second part)
MILANESE REFORMATION YEARS FOR HOCKEY: FROM THE NEW HC MILANO TO SPORTIVI GHIACCIO MILANO
During the 80's a group of impassioned fans forms a new HC Milano. It is the basis for the reformation of milanese ice hockey. In 1985, the team finds a sponsor, Arbre Magique, and with this re-links the bridges with a glorious ice rink on Via Piranesi. Soon after, they are promoted to the B series.
The next year a new sponsor enters onto the scene, the international shipping company, Saima. Their name will go on to be linked more and more with ice hockey. The A series does not arrive for them immediately. Unfortunately, a dramatic final game with Fiemme and Cavalese, lost by one goal after a futile try hits the pole and not the net with only 6 seconds remaining, ruins their chances . The long awaited promotion will have to wait until 1988. In the meantime, a new protagonist arrives in Lombardy, The Varese Team, who become 1987, and 1989 champions of Italy.
The momentum continues and after years of having only Italian players (one foreigner and some naturalized Italians),athletes of other nations begin to come onto the scene. Some of these have already bright pasts, coming from the NHL in North America. From the Italian-Canadian Robert Manno (an apparition also in an All Star Game) to the strong Swede, Kent Nilsson, and the acrobatic, yet often insurmountable goalie, Jim Corsi, who also had a presence in Italy's national team. Due to the expert playing of the naturalized players, they also qualify for the Olympics in Sarajevo.

ARTICLE What the future holds for the italian ice hockey team Italhockey is full of newcomers, adrift from the Italian-Canadian and Italian-American origins which have made the Italian team so great for over the last ten years, and therefore undergoing immense change.
This is all part of the technical process adopted by the Federation, aimed towards the Olympic quadrennial leading up to Torino 2006. Italy has played against the most powerful teams in the elite Group A in ten consecutive editions of the World Hockey Olympic championships (held annually), winning in Lubiana in '91, beating Norway and France in the Group B World Olympic championships and gaining promotion; since Prague/Bratislava '92, Italy has been in Group A, and will take part in the next Championships in Sweden in May 2002. Decisive, great hockey players, the marvellous generation of Gaetano Orlando, Bruno Zarrillo, Mario Brian Chitarroni, Joe Busillo, Anthony Iob, Mike Rosati, David Delfino, Maurizio Mansi, Dino Felicetti, Anthony Circelli, Mike De Angelis, Chris Bartolone, Stefan Figliuzzi, Larry Rucchin and Bob Nardella. Representatives of a National team which is nothing like the Italian Championship, which has little technical breadth, spectacular appeal and finance. It was Adolf Insam from Garda, chief trainer of Italhockey since Nagano '98 (following the tragic death of the Canadian great, Brian Lefley, who was responsible for moulding the National Team during the Nineties), who triggered and set up the extremely delicate, risky phase of transforming a team which had much closer links with the Italian hockey world. At the 2000 Championships in St. Petersburg only 7 members of the Italian team were actually Italian-American.

1998 Olympic Preview
by Jim Iovino , Ace Reporter
The 1998 edition of the Winter Olympics will be special since the NHL decided to shut down and allow the world's top players to participate in the Olympic ice hockey tournament. There will be no "Dream Team" like there was when NBA players took part in the Summer Olympics as Team USA, but the dispersal of talent throughout the hockey teams in this year's games will make for a very entertaining international event. The following is a guide to each of the teams in this year's tournament, including a roster for each country and a medal count. For those teams that will actually have a shot at making the medal round and hope to unseat Team Sweden as the world's best, an individual team preview has been added with the latest news surrounding each country's squad. (Active NHL players in bold , * indicates active NHL players with Olympic experience) 1998 Austrian Olympic Team Head Coach: Ron Kennedy
Assistant Coaches: Greg Holst, Helmut Keckeis
