Oh Canada ... you goofed.
Wayne Gretzky's undying loyalty to his hockey generation should have died when he took the job of picking Team Canada, but it didn't. So three fragile superstars limp into Salt Lake: Mario Lemieux on a sore hip, Eric Lindros on a sore knee, and Stevie Yzerman on ... a sore knee.
In Vancouver, where the Bruins play tonight, a young, healthy lion named Joe Thornton paces his hotel room and peeks at the phone the way Tom Hanks peeked at his laptop in "You've Got Mail."
Yzerman was to give it the acid test last night in Montreal. If the knee wasn't right, he was pledged to call Gretzky, who would give Thornton the bad/good news. You know what, though? It doesn't matter anymore. Any team that's constituted on personal agendas cannot win. Gretzky's agenda is loyalty, the same kind that then-coach John Muckler showed him in 1997-98 when his minus-11 play made a bad Rangers team worse. Gretzky's paying it forward now, especially where it concerns an international incident just waiting to happen named Theo Fleury. Good for the good ol' boys but not for Canada.

    APOLOGIA
    PRIDE OF ITALIAN HERITAGE
Too often one hears the opinion that the media just doesn't understand about people, in general and in particular. But one must come to understand that the media operate on ideas, some objective and some prejudicial; they operate on points of view, some offered by the general public, and, others promulgated by the editors, reporters, publishers and owners. In the world of media, operations are influenced by public opinion, support and current events and occurrences. The media maintain that their roles are to provide information so that the public decides; yet, it is known that the media often take action to influence, subtly and and not so subtly, the attitudes and actions of the public, through editorials, endorsements and advertising. To those who say that the image of Italian Americans is misrepresented, misunderstood, or flagrantly twisted, the question can be asked, "What has been done to correct misunderstandings?" For those who have attempted to answer inequities, their actions are often singular, disjointed and unorganized. There is no question that a unified approach such as those offered by the Jewish and the Black communities draw the attention and proper response from the media. At the present time, there is no such well organized response system in the Italian American community; nor is there a library of knowledge in the collective mind of the Italian American community of the many contributions which Americans of Italian heritage have contributed to this great nation. The list of their contributions is both long and notable, yet the annals of the history of this nation lack the accounts and the footnotes of the accomplishments and the personalities.

    Cougars shut out Mustangs
    By TERRY JONES
published December 4, 2002 DURANT With dominant speed and ball control, short-handed Durant knocked off district foe Manatee Lakewood Ranch 4-0 in a fast-paced game Tuesday night. It didn't start out that way. For the first 27 minutes, neither team seemed able to take charge. It took over 12 minutes before either team could muster a shot on goal. In the 28th minute, Mustangs keeper Lisa Vander-Kraatstook down an attacking Cougar in the box. On the penalty kick, Coleen Feeney put the ball into the upper left corner for a 1-0 lead. That goal rattled the Mustangs defenders, and on another Durant attack three minutes later, a Lakewood Ranch backline player kicked the ball into her own net. Closing out the first-half scoring, freshman striker Gabi Rivera broke through the defense to score from 12 yards. Emily Stutzman and Feeney assisted on the goal.
