By Eric Rumble When Bobby Orr was growing up in Parry Sound, Ontario, playing hockey had little to do with accolades and awards. He and his pals would lace up their skates, grab their sticks and head for the ice, often a frozen stretch of the Seguin River near his home. There were no parents and no referees and games ended at dinnertime, or sundown. "It was never anything organized," says Orr, "just all of us playing to have a good time and that's it."At age 53, nestled into his role as one of the game's most visible ambassadors, and humbly enjoying his status as the best defenceman ever to play, he wants to recreate those circumstances for the kids who wish for the same things he did. Unfortunately, it's much easier said than done. "So many of today's programs are about trophies and jackets, and we think that's a big mistake," says Orr. Having spent his formative years in and around hockey rinks, it's obvious that he's partial to the lessons the game has taught him. "Growing up, if I hadn't had sports, I don't know where I'd be. God only knows what street corners I'd have been standing on and God only knows what I'd have been doing, but instead I played hockey and went to school and stayed out of trouble." With a teacher like Orr, it's tough to imagine his influence being anything but magical.

Bobby Orr
Bobby Orr was a hockey player who showed the world that the defensive line could also be a offensive force. Bobby was the best rookie in 1966-1967. Bobby finally retired in 1979. Bobby was four years old when he got his first pair of skates. They were too big for him so his father stuffed the toes with paper. By the time Bobby was nine, he had won the Most Valuable Player award in the Peewee Division in Parry Sound, his hometown.
Bobby's Life When Bobby was 14 years old, he played with the Oshawa Generals, a junior hockey team. Bobby played 34 games and finished with 6 goals and 15 assists for 21 points. Bobby would have four all star seasons with the Generals before beginning his NHL career with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. In 1976, Bobby played for Team Canada to try to win the Canada Cup. Bobby and Dennis Potvin led the team in scoring. Bobby was named Most Valuable Player for the entire tournament. This tournament was with the best hockey players in the world. Bobby injured his knees many times in his career, and after several knee operations, he decided to take year off to try to heal his knees.

When Bobby Orr - the greatest defenceman ever to lace up the blades - drives around the countryside in the winter he sees something terribly wrong. Orr, who developed his quickness and soft hands playing shinny as a boy on the frozen Seguin River in Parry Sound, Ont., doesn't see kids outside playing hockey on their own anymore. He can't remember the last time he's seen 20 kids out on a backyard rink just for the fun of it. "When was the last time you saw a field with a bunch of kids all by themselves and no adults to mess up the kids' activity?" Orr asked. "The kids wait for it to be organized. They want to go play all of these tournaments, for a little practice time. I learned my skills by dropping the puck just with the kids. I think that's missing today. "You hear all the time about European players playing the game. These players that come over at 17, 18 and 19, they just don't all of a sudden become skilled. From the time they were little fellas, they learned the fundamentals of the game. Let them create." Even 21 years after he announced that he was hanging up the blades in a tearful news conference on Nov. 8 1978, Orr's opinions on the game carry a lot of weight.

No matter at what time these players wore the Spoked B, they wore it with pride and played with class.
This is my personal page for my favorite hockey team in the NHL, THE BOSTON BRUINS !!! The Bruins are one of the original teams in the NHL, having a long tradition and history of hockey. Winners of 5 Stanley Cups, in recent years they have not had the opportunity to win a Cup. However we know that will change in the next few years ! With the addition of many young players, the Bruins are going to be contenders in the near future !
The coming season promises to be an exciting one, with the addtion of Joe Thornton and Sergei Samsonov to the Bruins ! Thornton has the potential to bloom into a franchise player and all of us that wear the Black and Gold hope that he does that wearing a Bruins jersey ! Samsonov though not as big physically as Joe is, however is extremely fast and quick, and having seen him play with the Detroit Vipers in the IHL, I know he will be a great addition to the team !
For those of us proud Bruins fans that bleed Black and Gold, we know that they will do their utmost to allow Ray Bourque, one of the premier defense players of all time, to drink from Lord Stanleys Cup, a goal, LONG OVERDUE and one most deservedly required !!

Shinny Gives the Golden Finger (and that's a good thing) to... Bobby Orr Our first Golden Finger to a retired player goes to the very worthy Bobby Orr, on the occasion of his 50th birthday. We could go on and on about the amazing man who revolutionized the game and managed to win two scoring titles as a defenseman, or how he led the Bruins to two Stanley Cups, or what he might have done hadn't his career been cut short at the age of 27 due to ravaged knees... But we really admire as well the post-hockey years of this incredible guy. Although he was victimized by the heinous activities of Alan Eagleson, Orr rebuilt his fortune from nothing by his own hard work and business savvy. He has devoted himself to much charity work as well. And recently Bobby started a new career as a hockey agent, largely to provide the kind of services to young players which he wishes he had received. His recently backing Gordie Howe's threat to pull out of the Hall of Fame if Eagleson was not expelled was another gesture testifying to Orr's character. Bobby Orr gave his all to hockey when he was on the ice, and continues still. We wish every success to this man who does the sport proud, and Bobby, this Golden Finger is our birthday tribute to you!

Cherry and Orr to return as Coaches for Home Hardware Top Prospects Game
The Canadian Hockey League announced today that two of hockey's biggest names will return as coaches for the 2003 Home Hardware Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects Game. Hockey Hall of Fame member Bobby Orr will renew his coaching rivalry with Don Cherry, the star of Hockey Night in Canada's Coach's Corner, in the eighth edition of the Home Hardware CHL Top Prospects Game. The game, which features 40 of the CHL's top prospects for the 2003 National Hockey League Entry Draft, will take place in Kitchener, Ontario on Wednesday, January 22, 2003.
Orr and Cherry were the head coaches in the first six games of the Home Hardware CHL Top Prospects Game. Cherry's squad won the first game back in 1996 at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens but Orr enjoys a 4-2 edge in wins against his former coach. In the last meeting between Team Orr and Team Cherry, played in Calgary in 2001, Team Orr prevailed by a 5-3 score.

    Bobby Orr
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Robert Gordon Orr (born March 20 ) is a Canadian ice hockey player. He was born in Parry Sound Ontario Canada and his ice hockey talents were evident at a very early age. As a 14-year-old he played for the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Junior A League, competing against mostly 19-and 20-year-olds. National Hockey League rules meant he could only join the Boston Bruins as an eighteen-year-old. In his first season he won the Calder Trophy as outstanding rookie and began a turnaround for the perpetual last place Bruins that culminated on May 10 when he scored one of the most acrobatic goals in hockey history to give Boston its first Stanley Cup in 29 years.

    History Of Bobby Orr
    ROBERT GORDON - (Bobby) ORR
Defense, 6-0 ft., 199 lbs. Parry Sound, Ont., March 20, 1948 In early 1948 (March 20th) the Orr family had a new son named after his grandfather his name was Robert Gordon Orr. At the tender age of 4 years old, a friend of the family bought Bobby his first pair of skates. Little did they know the history that would be made after that purchase. He embarked on playing in the Parry Sound Minor Squirt Hockey League. By 9 years old he had won the MVP in the Pee-Wee Division. Not a bad start. By the early 1960's the legend of Bobby Orr had begun. The fans were taking notice of his speed and puck control. The Parry Sound Bantam All-Stars were playing in a tournament and the scouts from all N.H.L. teams were there but not to watch Bobby. The Bruins Management were in amazement as Bobby played in all but 2 minutes of the game, he was in the penalty box. Parry Sound won the Championship 2-1. The bruins management knew they had to have Bobby Orr on their team. At 14, Bobby Orr started playing with the Oshawa Generals. Ending up with 4 all-star seasons with the Generals.
