Bobby Orr
Bobby Orr was born in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. He wasn't educated that much because he was drafted to the Boston farm team at the age of 14. When he turned five, he started to play organized hockey at a indoor rink at the Parry Sound Memorial Community Centre. Bobby began by playing for Parry Sound's Minor Squirt team. He stood out right from the start. He was small but he could skate fast and had a knack for keeping the puck on his stick. Bobby Orr worked at a mens clothing store where he spent most of his salary. His uncle Howard owned a butcher shop. Every day he would start out the day with a bowl of hot oatmeal. When defenseman Bobby Orr was dominating Canadian junior hockey with the Oshawa Ontario Generals, hockey writers joked that it was impossible to mention his name without using the word "amazing" in front of it. The amazing Bobby Orr! The title was deserved. From the time he entered the Ontario Hockey Association Junior A Series at the age of 14 to play against people up to twenty years of age, Orr was the star. He was the leading junior goal scorer each year. He became the most publicized young player in hockey history. After only three seasons in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, "amazing" became completely inadequate to describe Orr. "Fantastic" was more suitable.

hockey fans in Parry Sound, Ontario, in the late 1950s saw a lot of this hockeygenius in its infancy. Doug orr, bobby's dad, had been a speedy player and
http://bruinshockey87.tripod.com/orr.html
Professional teams agreed. The Boston Bruins went to unusual lengths to land the small prospect. When Orr was 14, Boston made arrangements for him to play with the Oshawa Generals in the metro Junior A League. He continued to live at home and commute to each game. Though he didn't attend a single practice with the team, Orr was selected to the league's Second All-Star Team. All the speedy youngster required was size to make him a bona fide star. He was 5'6" and 135 pounds at 14. The next year, when he moved to an Oshawa high school and played in the Ontario junior league, he was 5'9" and 25 pounds heavier. By the time his junior career was over - when he was all of 17 and a man playing with boys - he was a sturdy 6' and almost 200 pounds. The phenomenon Boston fans had been reading about since he was a freckle-faced kid with a brushcut was ready to enter the professional game. In his first National Hockey League game, against the Detroit Red Wings and Gordie Howe, 18-year-old Orr impressed the home crowd and the many reporters with his defensive abilities. He blocked shots, made checks and moved opposing players away from the net. He also recorded his first point - an assist. Orr was better than good in his first season. He won the Calder Trophy as the best rookie and also made the NHL's Second All-Star Team. He was second in the league in scoring by defensemen and was a plus-30. Not only did he score and pass, he fought when needed, defeating his opponent more often than not, and could play a physical game. But some observers felt he was too daring, that he left himself open to hits with his all-out rushes and that his body had yet to develop to sustain him over the regular-season grind. Orr did suffer an injury in his rookie season, hurting his left knee on a daring rush. It was the beginning of a long battle with his knees that eventually ended his career.

would have been effected had orr been healthy or even 80% healthy like he oftenplayed in the National hockey League. I practiced with bobby orr every day
http://www.1972summitseries.com/orr.html
Orr Would Have Made A Big Difference
Easily Canada's best player, Bobby Orr was unable to play due to his bad knees. He was coming off of knee surgery and although he was named to the team, he never had medical clearance to play. He did practice and travel with the team, and you know it killed him to not be able to play. One has to wonder how the series outcome would have been effected had Orr been healthy - or even 80% healthy like he often played in the National Hockey League. Undoubtedly the Russians would have still pushed Team Canada to the limit, but Orr was the best player on the planet. He was arguably the greatest player ever. "I practiced with Bobby Orr every day," said Brian Glennie, who didn't get to play in the series either, "and believe me, if Bobby's knees had been good, i don't think it would have taken that long for the results to be in Canada's favor. in junior I watched him dominate the game we lost to the Russians 2-1, but he was the best player on the ice by far." Orr still counts the Summit Series as one of his most cherished memories however.

#4 - Bobby Orr
It is arguable just who is the greatest player of all time. But it is almost obvious who is the greatest defenseman of all time...Number Four...Bobby Orr. Bobby Orr revolutionized the game of hockey. His slick passing and playmaking and his end to end rushes were unheard of by a defenseman. Only the very very best forwards would try a solo effort. Orr did it seemingly effortlessly. Before Bobby Orr defensemen were counted on primarily for defensive purposes. They would rarely join a rush, nevermind lead one. They stayed in front of the net and helped clear the puck out of the defensive zone. Their main job offensively was to get the puck out of their end and create a quick transition game. But after the kid from Parry Sound Ontario arrived, he would forever change the way the game is played. His end to end rushes and his mastery on the point of the powerplay changed the way offense was generated, and how defenses would cover them. He was simply the most fluid skilled player the NHL has ever seen, even more so than Gretzky or Lemieux, both of whom benefit from the game revolutionized by Orr. Orr won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 1967. He would finished second in scoring among defenseman with 13 goals and 41 points, astounding numbers in those days. Harry Howell won the Norris Trophy that year, but was quoted after being named the winner - "I might as well enjoy it (Norris Trophy) now, because I expect it's going to belong to Bobby Orr from now on."

Bobby Orr voted 31st greatest athlete of century

Orr brought more offense to defense
By Larry Schwartz

Special to ESPN.com
Only a handful of athletes have changed the way their sport is played. Bobby Orr is one of the select few. Bobby Orr is the only defenseman to lead the league in assists, and he did it five times. Orr radically altered the style of hockey by introducing defensemen to the offensive side of the game. A defenseman who scored goals, rushed the puck up ice, set up teammates with pinpoint passes. What a revolutionary concept. "He changed the sport by redefining the parameters of his position," wrote Sports Illustrated 's E.M. Swift. "A defenseman, as interpreted by Orr, became both a defender and an aggressor, both a protector and a producer. Orr was more than an opportunist: He created opportunities." Orr's style generated a new wave of offensive-minded defenseman, such as Denis Potvin and Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque and Brian Leetch. But as outstanding as they were, they couldn't compare with the Boston Bruins' legendary No. 4. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Orr excited fans with rink-length rushes. His shot was a low black dart, blistering and accurate. He quarterbacked the Bruins from the point. He also played with reckless abandon, sacrificing his body as he dived to block shots. He possessed a toughness in addition to grace, skill and speed.
