He began playing with the Bruins in 1966 and revitalized the team. In 1976 he moved to the Chicago Blackhawks where he played until his retirement in 1979. "The Hockey Song" provides a humorous take on what has been for the past many decades the most popular professional sport in Canada . As the home province of both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators , Ontario has arguably been the country's center of hockey culture. "The Hockey Song" provides an ideal springboard for discussions about national and cultural identity (vis a vis the hockey) and stereotyping (in "The Hockey Song" Canadians Parisians Californians and Australians are all in one way or another stereotyped). The song could also be used for research projects and/or classroom discussion on the history of the sport and individual hockey heroes from Ontario.

    Hockey Quotes Wayne Gretzky
"By far Gretzky is the most talented player ever. Every time he gets the puck something exciting happens." -Mike Milbury "You'll never catch me bragging about goals, but I'll talk all you want about my assists." -Wayne Gretzky "If I had to pick three players to start a franchise, I'd choose Hasek, Peter Forsberg and Eric Lindros." -Wayne Gretzky "You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take." -Wayne Gretzky Mario Lemieux
"Since the beginning, I always loved the game. When you grow up in Montreal, one day you want to be a professional hockey player. When I was six or seven, I knew that was what I wanted." -Mario Lemieux "One thing I hate is people screaming at me. If you want me to do something, talk to me. When someone screams at me to hurry up, I slow down." -Mario Lemieux "Every day is a great day for hockey." -Mario Lemieux "I'm not sure Mario is going to get accolafes he deserves, especially from outside the game. But from within, the players, the people who follow closely, realize exactly what he's broughtto the table, exactly what he has done. People tend to forget...hockey was dying in Pittsburgh before he got there. I played there. It was almost dead. I'm sorry, but the NHL would not have a franchise in Pittsburgh today had Mario not come along. Think about it, no hockey in Pittsburgh." -Wayne Gretzky "I don't know if I would have the dedication, the endurance, the will to do waht he's done."

BOBBY ORR Bobby Orr was one of the greatest defensemen in the professional hockey history. He revolutionized the position with his graceful skating and extrordinary ability to carry the puck up the ice. He did this without weakening his team's defense. Orr's 139 points in the 1970-1979 season remain a record for the National Hockey League defensemen. Orr is still the only defenseman to have led the NHL in scoring, doing this in 1969-1970 and 1974-1975 seasons. He won the Heart Memorial Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the NHL three seasons, from 1969-1970 through 1971-1972. He captured the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the league's best defenseman a record eight consecutive seasons, from 1967-1968 through 1974-1975. Robert Gordon Orr was born in Parry Sound, Ontario. He played for Boston Bruins from 1966-1976. Orr signed with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1976. He retired because of knee problems in 1978. Back To Main Page Back To Index Back to Time line
