American-born players in the NHL share their memories of the Miracle on Ice in 1980: Suter Gary Suter , San Jose Sharks "I remember thinking 'they don't have a chance' and I had a brother (Bob) who played on the team! The Russian team was a much better skilled team, and the American team had just recently lost (10-3) to Russia (in an exhibition). I was at boarding school in Indiana and, to be honest, I didn't even watch the game. I went to the movies instead because I thought for sure there was no chance to win. When I came out of the theater, there was a buzz in the air and people we're screaming, 'We beat the Russians.' I couldn't believe it." Granato Tony Granato , San Jose Sharks "It was the greatest sporting event I ever saw. The hype that was built up around it was unbelievable. You had these college kids playing against the best team in the world. I think their triumph really opened the eyes of the NHL to American-born players."

Podein provides needed pop By Adrian Dater
Denver Post Sports Writer Oct. 29, 2000
- Shjon Podein apparently decided to come dressed as Wayne Gretzky for Halloween on Saturday night at the Pepsi Center. With the Colorado Avalanche looking at the possibility of having its 10-game unbeaten streak snapped by the Edmonton Oilers, Podein single-handedly won another game for the Avs. Podein scored two goals 10 seconds apart in the third period to break a tie game and give Colorado a 4-2 victory, upping its record to an NHL-best 9-0-2, and leaving the Avs four unbeaten games short of tying the Oilers' 1984-85 NHL record of 15 straight to start a season. "Very rarely do I score two goals in an NHL game. Even more rarely do I score two goals 10 seconds apart," Podein said. With the Avs and Oilers locked in a 2-2 tie after Edmonton had scored twice in the third period to seize the momentum, Podein and veteran linemate Dave Reid combined for the two quick goals, just one second behind the franchise record set in 1997 in Calgary. After Oilers goalie Tommy Salo let out a big rebound of a Stephane Yelle shot from the corner, Reid grabbed the puck behind the net and saw a wide-open Podein charging to the front of the net, hollering for the puck.

Avs don't miss step with replacements By Adrian Dater
Denver Post Sports Writer Nov. 23, 2000
- The Columbus Blue Jackets are an NHL expansion team, so they could hardly be expected to beat an established team such as the Hershey Bears on Wednesday night. In fact, the Bears ... the Colorado Avalanche, that is ... did prevail over the Blue Jackets 5-2 at the Pepsi Center, sending the Avs into Turkey Day with the league's best record intact. Playing with a roster featuring six regulars from last year's American Hockey League Bears squad, the banged-up Avs proved they don't need to start raiding the local rec league rinks for reinforcements. The Hershey pipeline is supplying fresh talent nicely, thank you. Among the contributors to Colorado's third victory in as many meetings over the Blue Jackets was the new "Fantastic Finn," Ville Nieminen, whose first-period goal helped overcome an early 1-0 deficit and break a two-game losing streak. Nieminen scored with 24 seconds left in the period to send the Avs up 3-1 after torrid left winger Alex Tanguay scored the first two goals for Colorado, extending his league-leading points streak to 10 games. Nieminen, playing with the Bears only a week ago before a rash of injuries hit the Avs, extended his own points streak to three games on what proved the game-winning goal.

SHJON PODEIN CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION TO HOLD FUNDRAISING EVENT
PODEIN HOSTS AVALANCHE
Denver, Colo. – The Shjon Podein Children’s Foundation will host an "Avalunch" on December 13, 2001. Colorado Avalanche hockey player Shjon Podein established the Shjon Podein Children’s Foundation in 1997 to provide financial gifts to organizations that improve the quality of life and creating an environment of caring and community support for children in need. Since it’s founding, nearly $200,000 in grants have been gifted. Several of Shjon’s Avalanche teammates, including Dan Hinote, Greg de Vries, Steve Reinprecht, Martin Skoula, Milan Hejduk, and Radim Vrbata will be in attendance. Several silent auction items, including team signed sticks, jerseys, and pucks will be available. This is the second Avalunch event to be held in Denver and all proceeds will stay in the Denver community. Last year’s event raised nearly $10,000. A buffet lunch will be served from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at The Denver Chop House and Brewery, 1735 19th Street, Denver. Tickets were a $92.50 donation to the Shjon Podein Children’s Foundation. The event is limited in attendance to 92 individuals and has sold out.

He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche on November 12,1998 in exchange for Keith Jones. He recorded his first NHL hat trick on February 18, 2000 against the NY Rangers. He suffered a broken leg shortly after the trade and missed 25 games, ending a consecutive games played streak of 223 games. In his second season with Colorado he was injured in the Burgundy and White training camp scrimmage, needed surgery and then missed the entire exhibition and first five regular season games. Since then he has been relatively injury free. Podein is considered by many to be one of Colorado "short handed" specialists. "It is no secret that special teams win games,"

He is married to Sherry and during the season, he lives in Littleton, Colorado in a house owned by former Avalanche player, Curtis Lescyshen. During the summer he lives in Minneapolis and spends time boating on Lake Minnetonka and the North Shore of Lake Superior. He also enjoys golf and basketball. His "best friend" is his dog named"LittleBuddy". Family is very important to Shjon and he tries to get home over the Christmas holidays. "One Christmas I really remember is when I was in the minors playing at Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. We had two days off and I flew home...By the time I got home, I had a total of two hours to say hello to my grandma, grandpa and my dad. I never told them I was coming. It was kind of an emotional moment. We all started crying." Growing up, his idol was Eric Strobel, a member of the 1980 Olympic "Miracle on Ice" hockey team. "The entire town was caught up in the rapture of the Olympics that year", Podein recalls. "Even now, he's probably the most well-known player out of Rochester. That whole thing was just huge in our town."

The puck's about to drop on the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs. To get you ready, here's a look at some of the wildest and wackiest moments in Stanley Cup playoff history. Longest Moment
One of the most exciting things about Stanley Cup playoff hockey is sudden death overtime. When the next goal decides the winner, games can go on for hours and hours. The longest NHL playoff game happened on March 24, 1936 between the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Maroons. The game finished at 2:30 in the morning when Martin "Mud" Bruteneau scored the winning goal for the Maroons after 116 minutes and 30 seconds of extra time - that's nearly six periods of O.T. The final score was 1 - 0. Darkest Moment
During the second period of Game 4 of the 1988 Stanley Cup Finals between the Boston Bruins and the Edmonton Oilers , the lights went out at the Boston Gardens. A 4000 volt switch overloaded and the brain-dead maintenance workers at the arena weren't able to turn the lights back on. The Stanley Cup playoff game was cancelled and replayed two nights later in Edmonton where arena staff were able to keep the power on for the entire game. Ugliest Moment
In a 1976 Stanley Cup playoff game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Toronto Maple Leafs , Dave "The Hammer" Schultz picked up an NHL playoff record, 42 penalty minutes. His total included two

MADISON, Wisc. - Two more former conference players forwards Shjon Podein and Steve Reinprecht have added their names to the list of Western Collegiate Hockey Association alums who have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup as a result of Colorado's victory over New Jersey in the 2001 National Hockey League playoff finals.
