I didn't start going to hockey games until January of 1997, so I missed Steve's stint in the American Hockey League (the league my hometown team is a member of). It wasn't until the 1997 Stanley Cup playoffs that I saw him play. Needless to say I was impressed (no, not just visually). He had a really rough job handed to him when Dominik Hasek couldn't play. He had played in only 13 games before coming in during the playoffs. He performed admirably, and was involved in one of the more exciting moments of the playoffs...the goalie fight with Garth Snow. That's when the madness began... Oh Eek!!
I can't even believe it...this website was mentioned in ESPN: The Magazine! How hilarious is that? I was at a Cincinnati Mighty Ducks game and my friend Theresa called me screeching into my cell phone about how my web site made a national publication. Needless to say, I nearly choked when she told me which one. I scanned the little blurb about it, you can check it out here I'm Not Steve!

Their defeat came in the form of a smaller and more tenacious division rival. In plowing through the Boston spring, Montreal managed to expose the Bruins for what they were and might be again: A team that needed better goals to advance. It’s natural to look only at the scoreboard, the wins and losses, but the playoff Bruins can blame an almost unconscionable display of deficit spending in the Timely Goals department. Pessimists (realists?) saw the deficit spending continue throughout the summer. The Bruins had moved last season from “playoff contender” toward “Cup contender.” Their direction this offseason is unclear. This much, however, is clear: Boston won’t have one of its 40-goal scorers, or the only clear No. 1 goaltender it had in years, to kick around anymore. Steve Shields , G Say what you will, Bruins fans, about Byron Dafoe giving up a bad goals at worse times ( Joe Sakic ’s splitting the wickets with a five-hole snapshot not long into Ray Bourque’s return to Beantown sure made a statement), but he was

Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday October 26, 1999 04:09 PM Steve Shields explains why it is so dangerous for him to go out of the crease. Elsa Hasch/ Allsport Question: I have a couple of questions. I know you have had chance to play a lot of the division teams. I was wondering if you think the Pacific Division could be the strongest in the league this year? Steve Shields Well, obviously I think it is probably the strongest division. I think that pretty much everybody is over .500. We played a few of the teams and I think we have lost two games already in our division and it is really tough. I think everyone has improved their team dramatically from last season. We are a much improved team. I think Phoenix is going to be better and obviously Anaheim and L.A. have made moves to make their teams better so it is going to be a tough division all year long. Question: The scoring has been up and a lot of the reasons that people are pointing to is the new rule with the crease and how it is kind of no-harm/no-foul. It was said that everybody likes it except the goaltenders. I was wondering from your perspective, do you think there is more traffic in front of you and is it making stopping the puck more difficult .... although from your stats, I guess not?

Buffalo grabbed Shields in the fifth round (101st overall) of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. Shields won the 1996 Calder Cup with the Rochester Americans, giving up 16 goals in 18 playoff games. The goaltender earned his first NHL win Dec. 23, 1995, downing the San Jose Sharks. Three seasons later, on June 18, 1998, he joined the Sharks, moving to San Jose with a Draft pick for Kay Whitmore and a pair of selections. The Sharks gave Shields his first starting job during the 1999-00 season and he responded by recording the team's second-best save-percentage in history (.911). HE was dealt to Anaheim during the 2001 season as part of the package for Teemu Selanne. Shields was traded to the Boston Bruins for a Draft choice after the 2001-02 campaign. Before coming to the NHL, Shields played college hockey at the University of Michigan. He left the school as a Hobey Baker finalist. He also ranked second in career NCAA victories with 111.

The Making of the Mask by Rick Welch The Goaltender: The armored knight who stands in battle during the toughest competition, the last line of defense and the mysterious man behind "The Mask". With the advent of the slapshot and curved sticks; and players getting bigger, faster and stronger, the need for protection was apparent. Out of necessity the goalie mask was invented. Though very archaic in design and composition, it was the introduction of how the goaltender came across and his personality expressed. The mask was part of his persona, what makes one individual stand out from the rest. Thus, the making of the mask — that is the Gerry Cheevers mask — reincarnated. Cheevers (to Bruins Fans aka "Cheesy"), the undisputable heavyweight champion of goaltenders, was the goalie who had the most distinctive goalie mask on the planet. The stitches on his plain white mask become his trademark. It was the epitome of the position, knowing that when he took a puck to the face another stitch mark would appear. The Hall of Famer, through his style of play and artistic approach, has brought the concept of graphic design on the goaltender mask through the ages.

June 25, 2002 Steve Shields Comes to Boston in the Summertime
    by Kirk Luedeke
The Boston Bruins announced Tuesday that they had acquired goaltender Steve Shields from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for a third-round pick in the 2003 NHL draft. The Bruins promptly signed the goaltender to a two-year contract. Shields, a Toronto native who turns 30 next month, was a standout goaltender at the University of Michigan, where he used to hold the all-time NCAA wins record (111) until Marty Turco broke it four years later. The 10th pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 1991, Shields turned pro following the 1993-94 season and saw action in the ECHL and AHL before making the Sabres as Dominik Hasek's backup in 1996-97. When Hasek went down in the 1997 postseason, Shields outdueled Ottawa's Damian Rhodes to reach the second round of the playoffs before being eliminated by the Philadelphia Flyers. Traded to the San Jose Sharks prior to the 1998-99 season, Shields replaced Mike Vernon in the nets in 1999-2000, and led his team to a seven-game upset of the President's Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in the opening round of the 2000 playoffs.

    WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"Shields was acquired by San Jose prior to the 1998 expansion draft and performed exceptionally well. After 37 appearances, Shields even outperformed Vernon , but was once again a spectator come playoff time. Shields is at the age when most goaltenders begin to shine. At 6-3, 210 pounds, Shields covers a lot of net physically and intimidates the opposition with it. Shields is on the verge of becoming a solid No. 1 backstop. If not in 1999-2000, then surely by the following season." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 216) "A big goalie, Shields covers a great part of the net and intimidates shooters. Formerly Dominik Hasek 's backup in Buffalo, he learned by watching the best in the biz and steppe din with relative ease when traded to San Jose. Finally a No. 1 goalie in the NHL, he played in 68 games [sic] last season. Shields enjoyed an 11-game unbeaten streak in March [?], which prompted the Sharks to trade Mike Vernon to Florida. Shields has never looked back. He has the ability to get white-hot, which he has done on more than one occasion in the past."
