Hockey was already popular in Beantown with the Boston Athletic Association. But the team was riped from their sponsor, Charles Adams. He was then lobbied by a group of investors who brought Adams to a Stanley Cup final between the Montréal Canadiens and Calgary. Adams was impressed by the level of hockey he saw and decided to form his own NHL Club. The First NHL American based team was born.

Turco provides four seasons of big saves, victories for Michigan hockey
Fred Link
Guest Columnist
Marty Turco has come a long way since he played his first game as a Wolverine.
In his Michigan debut in the 1994 Blue-White game, Turco gave up eight goals,and many fans left wondering whether Turco could fill the shoes of his predecessor, Steve Shields, who had recorded more victories than any other goaltender in NCAA history. Michigan coach Red Berenson didn't like what he saw from his freshman goaltender that night either, and in the Wolverines' first game he started senior netminder Al Loges. "Marty did not look good in the Blue-White game," Berenson said. "And Loges played in our first game and I can't remember whether we won or we barely won, but I put Marty in the next night and he did the job." Michigan defeated Colorado Co lege 5-4 that night, and since then Turco has been a mainstay in front of the Wolverine net. "Marty has always had to hear about Steve Shields," Michigan captain Matt Herr said. "He's worked really hard for the past three years and now it's his time to shine."

HOCKEY ALUMNI Former Wolverines Enjoying NHL Ice Time
Nearly every week in a National Hockey League arena somewhere in the U.S. or Canada, there is a Michigan alumni gathering of sorts. Nine former Wolverine ice hockey players are currently playing on one of seven different NHL teams this season. The University and its highly successful collegiate hockey program span the width of the continental United States. Five U-M alumni can be found on the NHL rosters of the New York Islanders (David Harlock), New York Rangers (Mike Knuble, Chris Tamer), New Jersey Devils (Brendan Morrison) and Carolina Panthers (Steve Halko) along the east coast. The Vancouver Canucks (Bill Muckalt) and San Jose Sharks (Jeff Norton, Steve Shields) on the west coast claim three Wolverines. In the middle, two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit boasts of one Michigan grad, Aaron Ward. The nine current NHL rostered players are among 43 former Michigan players who have played in "the big league," including U-M head coach Red Berenson who went straight from the NCAA Tournament to the NHL in spring 1962.

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire men's ice hockey team fell to the University of Maine 3-2 in overtime at the Whittemore Center in front of a sold out crowd Sunday night. Maine's Lucas Lawson beat Wildcat netminder Mike Ayers (Hingham, Mass.) with 6.8 seconds remaining in the extra session to give the Black Bears the win, improving their record to 11-2-3 in Hockey East, while New Hampshire falls to 12-4-1.
New Hampshire (18-6-3 overall) got on the scoreboard at 1:12 of the opening frame when senior assistant captain and Hobey Baker candidate Lanny Gare (Vernon, B.C.) scored his 17th of season when he sent as laser in-between the legs of Maine goaltender Jim Howard. Senior assistant captain Colin Hemingway (Surrey, B.C.) and Mike Lubesnick (Northbrook, Ill.) were credited with assists.
Maine battled back scoring on its first shot at 3:56. Derek Dawson potted his sixth goal of the year while Martin Karyia and Chris Heisten had the assists. The Black Bears (21-3-4) would take a one-goal lead 2-1, at 19:53 of the first period when Tom Reimann beat Ayers. Colin Shields had the lone assist. After a scoreless second period, UNH knotted the game at 2-2. Senior Josh Prudden (Andover, Mass.) was sent in to the Maine zone alone by a pass from senior Jim Abbott (Mars, Pa.) to tie the game at 13:52 of the third frame.

New Hampshire Hockey Wins Hockey East Championship
Wildcats win first Hockey East Tourney Title in fourth attempt;
Attendance of 17,122 sets single-night Hockey East tourney record
BOSTON, MA – Top-ranked University of New Hampshire won the Hockey East Tournament Championship, and automatic NCAA bid, for the first time in its history Saturday night with a 3-1 victory over #7 University of Maine in front of a record Fleet Center crowd.
The Wildcats won the Hockey East tourney title for the first time in four tries, after losing in the finals in 1992 (to Maine), 1997 and 1999. Maine fell to 4-7 in their 11th championship game appearance. It was also New Hampshire’s first win over Maine in league post-season action after five Hockey East tournament losses to the Black Bears.
The championship game attendance of 17,122 was the best single-night attendance in the 18-year history of the Hockey East Tournament. The two-night total of 32,805 also set a record for semifinal and championship night total attendance. The previous single-night record was 15,989 for the semis on March 17, 2000, and the two-night record was 31,982, March 17-18 of 2000.
