Boston University Defeats Alaska-Anchorage, 5-3
Anchorage, AK Boston University completed its first weekend of regular season action with a 5-3 win over the University of Alaska-Anchorage, the host school of the Johnson Nissan Classic. Senior Chris Heron (F, North York, ONT) had two assists in the contest and was named "Most Outstanding Player" after notching 1-3-4 in the two games.
BU would jump on the board first with sophomore Jack Baker (F, Boston, MA) scoring a 4x4 goal 6:42 into the contest, but Alaska-Anchorage would score the next two goals of the period to take its only lead of the game. Before the close of the period, BU would receive a pair of goals from freshmen Mike Bussoli (D, Calgary, AB) and John Sabo (F, Harding, NJ) to take the lead for good.
Freshman defenseman John Cronin (Duxbury, MA) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, his second power play goal in as many nights, at 8:43 of the second period to make the score 4-2. Sophomore defenseman Chris Dyment (Reading, MA) added an insurance tally just 1:07 into the third.
Alaska-Anchorage's Reggie Simon made it 5-3 with a goal at the 4:37 mark of the final period but could draw no closer.

Ferris State Completes Weekend Sweep of Niagara

Niagara University, NY (January 4, 2003): Niagara's men's hockey team dropped to 1-6 on the season versus ranked teams as #11 Ferris State cruised to an 8-1 victory for a sweep of the weekend series. The Purple Eagles outshot the Bulldogs 26-23 but managed just the one goal versus Ferris goalie Mike Brown.
Ferris State roared out of the gates, claiming a 4-0 lead after one period of play. Kevin Caudill, Simon Mangos, Jeff Ledue and Derrick McIver all scored at even strength in the first to open up a commanding lead. The Purple Eagles would find the back of the net in the second, scoring for the second day in a row on the power play. In a reversal of Friday night's goal, Chris Welch buried a Barret Ehgoetz feed into the open net to put Niagara on the board.
Ferris State closed out the game with three goals in the third to ice the game and take a sweep of the weekend in which they outscored Niagara 15-2 and did not have a player with less than a +2 plus/minus ranking. In tonight's action the Bulldogs benefited from seven different goal scorers.
Niagara drops to 5-13-2 on the season. They take to the road Friday versus CHA foe Air Force with face-off scheduled for 9:05pm. The game can be heard live on WJJL 1440AM radio.

Niagara Runs into Ferris State Buzz Saw

Niagara University, NY (January 3, 2003): Playing their first game in three weeks, the Niagara University men's hockey team showed the rust of such a long layoff, falling to #11 Ferris State 7-1 before 1284 at Dwyer Arena. Ferris State is the first ranked team to visit Dwyer in over two years. With the loss, Niagara's record falls to 5-12-2.
Things looked good for Niagara early as Barret Ehgoetz capitalized on the team's first power-play opportunity by redirecting Andrew Nahirniak's point shot for a 1-0 lead two minutes into the first period.
That would stand as the lone Niagara bright spot as Ferris State would explode for seven unanswered goals, three each in the first and second periods, to cruise to victory. The Bulldogs received goals from seven different players and the line of Chris Kunitz, Jeff Legue and Derek Nesbitt combined for 10 points overall in the win.
Jeff VanNynatten made 28 saves for the Purple Eagles in a losing effort. Niagara managed just 17 shots for the game. The Purple Eagles are next in action Saturday in a rematch with the Bulldogs, 7:00pm face-off at Dwyer Arena.

They started brightly however, gaining an early short corner through decisive attacking play. Reading continued to press, producing some hockey that belies their lowly league position. The breakthrough for Wimbledon came mid-way through the first half. Reading failed to clear a short corner, and Wimbledon scrambled the ball across the line. A second short corner quickly followed for Wimbledon.

Turretfield Research Centre
Established in 1908 As a result of review of State research centres in 1985, it was decided that Turretfield would assume statewide responsibility for sheep and wool research, at the same time maintaining a role in cereal-livestock zone cropping and pasture agronomy research. Additional land (Kingsford) was purchased in July 1989 and new office, laboratory and conference facilities opened in October 1991. In July 1995, Turretfield became part of the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Premium Quality Wool through the Sheep Transgenesis Program. In turn lease arrangements were negotiated to gain access to additional grazing land at Angaston and Kapunda. In 1998 up to 2700 sheep were run on these leased properties. Funds to finance research are derived from the State Government, Industry Trust funds, especially the Grains Research and the private sector. Staffing Turretfield is under the control of the Chief Scientist, Livestock Systems and is currently staffed by a Manager, six research scientists, 11 technical officers and 10 ancillary staff. In addition, field trials are conducted on Turretfield by SARDI research staff from Adelaide as well as CSIRO, the University of Adelaide and other research organisations.
