Not all is lost
By Mike Chen
So much has already been written about the San Jose Sharks and their fall from grace, but there are a few overlooked positives coming out of this season. These positives, if successfully grown further, could be the key to returning to the playoffs next year.
The season that wasn't, is no more

Sharks go quietly into the night
By Mike Lee
The Sharks closed the book on the most disappointing season in team history on Sunday afternoon. The anti-climactic finish to the season that wasn't was topped off with a 3-3 tie with the visiting Phoenix Coyotes. And with a dash of irony, Sharks Mark Smith was smashed in the face by the opposition as the final horn sounded. Ironic, because the rest of the league took the same liberty with San Jose for a majority of the season after the Sharks were predicted to make a serious run for the Stanley Cup this season.

Nabokov's return not enough for San Jose
Three Chicago power play goals sink Sharks
10/27/02 - By Mike Lee
Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov made his season debut on Sunday night in Chicago, but a shaky first period and an absent San Jose penalty-kill unit cost Nabokov a win. Sergei Berezin scored two-first-period power play goals to pace the Blackhawks, who won for only the third time this season 3-2 at the United Center.
I felt pretty good," said Nabokov. "I had a pretty good jump, I tried to be consistent, and the most important part was just trying to stay consistent, period to period."
Berezin's two goals, and a Tyler Arneson power play goal helped push San Jose's penalty killing even deeper down the NHL rankings. The Sharks had entered the evening ranked 28th in stopping the opposition's power play, but the three man-up goals did nothing to improve that ranking.
Berezin converted just 2:33 into the game, after Nabokov was penalized for flipping the puck over the glass on a clearing attempt. The automatic delay of game penalty allowed the Berezin to score on a fluke play moments later. Steve Thomas tried centering the puck to Steve Sullivan in the slot, but Sullivan whiffed on the shot. The puck slid under Sullivan's stick to Berezin, who was cutting in on the left post. Nabokov setup to defend Sullivan, leaving the entire left side of the goal exposed for Berezin to cash in.
