New Hampshire men's hockey edges UMass, 4-3
AMHERST, Mass. - New Hampshire scored two goals in a four-minute span in the third period, and then held off a UMass rally late in the game to defeat the Minutemen, 4-3, in Hockey East action on Sunday. The loss, UMass' third in a row, drops its record to 13-10-1 overall and 7-8-0 in Hockey East, good for a tie for fourth place.
UMass wasted little time getting on the board. Mike Warner (Waltham, Mass.) fired a shot at UNH goalie Mike Ayers that kicked off to the left that Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) rebounded and stuck the puck under the crossbar for his 12th goal of the year, just 51 seconds into the contest. Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) also assisted on the goal. The goal for Mauldin earned him his 50th career point at UMass.
However, New Hampshire answered midway in the first period when Sean Collins capped off a 2-on-1 break, by sticking the puck into the back of the net past a diving Michael Waidlich (Millers Falls, Mass.) at the 13:03 mark to knot the score at 1-1. The Wildcats then went up 2-1 late in the second period, when Nathan Martz scored in a pile-up in front of the net. Martz poked the puck out of Waidlich's glove as he had it covered, and slid it into the back of the net at the 17:10 mark of second stanza.

No. 3 New Hampshire men's hockey beats No. 1 Minnesota, 3-1
Ayers turns aside 44 Gopher shots for Wildcats to take the weekend series 1-0-1
DURHAM, N.H. Seniors Lanny Gare (Vernon, B.C.) and Kevin Truelson (Avon, Mass.) and junior Nathan Martz (Chilliwack, B.C.) each netted single goals and junior Michael Ayers (Hingham, Mass.) turned aside a career-high 44 shots as the third-ranked University of New Hampshire men's hockey team beat No. 1 and defending national champion, the University of Minnesota, 3-1, on Saturday at the Whittemore Center.
Ayers picked up 21 saves in the third period alone as the Gophers were unable to find the back of the UNH net despite being up a man for a total of 6:13 of the final stanza.
Martz scored in the first and Gare and Truelson each scored goals for the Wildcats (2-0-1) in the second. Scoring the lone goal for the Gophers (1-1-1) was Troy Riddle. Travis Weber finished with 20 saves for Minnesota.

Confessions of a Serial Trader
Part 2 - The Rookie In our continuing efforts to bring you unique, cutting edge analysis, we here a Puckjunkie.com felt that we had to dig deeper into the depraved mind of the Serial Trader. What are his motives? How does he choose his victims? In a Puckjunkie.com exclusive we have excerpts from the Serial Trader's private journal. The material contained in this journal describes in graphic detail his thoughts and plans. We hope that in reading these excerpts it will help you identify potential serial traders in your league. While we are aware that there will be copycats we feel that this (and subsequent articles) must be printed. In every league there are Rookies and in many leagues there are those that mimic the Serial Trader. Learn to identify both if you want to survive and prosper. It happens every fall – the leaves begin to turn color, the wind becomes much cooler and the people become more focused on business. As the air around me begins to chill my skin, and the days grow shorter, the inner voice inside me begins to stir. It happens … like clockwork … the yearning begins and the voice grows louder. It is constant, ever present and is only satiated after I feed…I must feed … on the unsuspecting…the unknowing…and I always start with…the Rookie.

Hopefully, Westport can put this effort behind them and use the remaining two practices and one home game against Brockville next Friday to get tuned up for their playoff series against the Gananoque Islanders. On Wednesday evening the Rideaus played their last regular season road game in Brockville. The Rideaus went into the game missing a number of key players; Ryan Carty, James Thomas, Ben Knapp and Adam St. John. Westport got on the board first early in the period on a nice effort by Greg Kerr. Kerr made a great move on a Brockville defenceman and then blasted a shot by the Tikis' netminder. Steve Biscaro assisted on the play. Brockville was able to tie the game up at 11:25 of the first period when former Rideau Ryan DeKairelle found the net after some pressure from the Tikis. The period ended tied 1 to 1. Brockville jumped ahead in the second after the Rideaus left Casey Reilly alone in front of Westport goalie Josh Blank. The Rideaus fought back with two consecutive goals to close the period. The first goal was scored by Jason Melo and assisted by Biscaro. The second goal was scored on a delayed penalty as the Rideaus were able to move the puck down the length of the ice and score with the extra player on the ice. Chris Dales recorded the goal with assists to Kerr and Biscaro. In the third the Tikis came out strong and finally were able to score on the powerplay to tie the game at three. Brockville kept pressing and were able to score again to restore their one goal lead, 4 to 3. Westport kept battling though and were finally rewarded when Steve Biscaro took a pass from Kerr and outwaited the Brockville goalie to tie the game at 4. Josh Blank was strong in the Westport net stopping over 50 shots to preserve a point. Overtime solved nothing and the Rideaus were able to pick up another point to give them 50 points on the season with only two games to go. The Rideaus took 5 minors, 3 five minute misconducts and 3 ten minute misconducts.

Thomas impressed coach Robbie Ftorek, who was rumored to have made the 27-year-old his choice to backup Byron Dafoe for the 2001-02 season in Boston. Unfortunately for Thomas, the business side of hockey intervened, and to avoid a potential loss of John Grahame to waivers, Thomas was the odd man out instead. He requested a return to Finland, where he played near the Arctic Circle for Karpat of the Finnish SM-Liiga. Thomas battled a knee injury in November that required minor surgery, but the worst was yet to come. Upon the completion of his stellar Finnish campaign, the Bruins recalled Thomas to Providence, where he promptly tore his MCL in his first practice with the Baby Bruins, effectively ending any hopes of seeing some action in the AHL postseason. Unfortunately for Thomas, he developed a hernia over the summer, and after having corrective surgery, was not ready to skate when the Bruins broke camp. After missing virtually all of the practices and scrimmages, Thomas was way behind the power curve, but did manage to get into one complete game of preseason action, a 4-3 OT loss to the New York Rangers, before being demoted to Providence, where he began the 2002-03 season. Thomas sparkled in his debut, turning aside 31 Oilers shots and getting a late-game goal from rookie Ivan Huml to earn his first NHL win, 4-3. The ever-smiling Thomas was a featured guest on Hockey Night in Canada and the toast of Beantown, impressing all those who witnessed his impressive performance, realizing his difficult path to the highest level.
