While focusing on all aspects of the Avalanche on ice performance, Rick will work closely with the Avalanche forwards and assists in the development of the younger players. In 1,144 career NHL regular season games, Tocchet tallied 440 goals and 512 assists for 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes and is one of only three players in the history of the National Hockey League to collect 400 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes in his career. Tocchet represented Team Canada at the 1990 and 1991 World Championships and played for Canada in the 1987 and 1991 Canada Cup tournaments. The Colorado Avalanche announced on Wednesday, January 15 that Rick Tocchet has been named an assistant coach. He joins head coach Tony Granato, assistant coach Jacques Cloutier, and assistant coach, video Paul Jerrard to complete the makeup of the Avalanche coaching staff. "We spoke to several qualified candidates in our search for a new assistant coach who were well-qualified, and we’re excited that Rick Tocchet has decided to join our organization," said head coach Tony Granato. "Rick played at the highest level of hockey in the world for eighteen seasons and brings with him a vast amount of qualifications and hockey knowledge. "Rick was a gifted offensive player who played the game with a high degree of grit, determination, and a great work ethic, which are qualities we as a coaching staff want focus upon on a daily basis." In 1,144 career NHL regular season games, Tocchet tallied 440 goals and 512 assists for 952 points and 2,972 penalty minutes and is one of only three players in the history of the National Hockey League to collect 400 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes in his career. Entering 2002-03, he ranked among the top-ten all-time penalty minute leaders. He eclipsed the 20-goal barrier eight times in his career, including two 30-goal and three 40-goal campaigns. During the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Tocchet added 52 goals, 60 assists, and 471 penalty minutes to his career totals.
