AP DALLAS (AP) Although the Vancouver Canucks have been struggling lately, it hasn't been Todd Bertuzzi 's fault. Bertuzzi continued his recent roll with three goals, two on the power play, to tie for the league lead and set his career high in points as the Canucks beat the Dallas Stars 4-2 Monday night in a showdown between Western Conference division leaders. Pat Kavanagh added his first NHL goal and rookie goaltender Alexander Auld stopped 26 shots as Vancouver matched Dallas with 95 points, second to Detroit's 96. The Canucks hold the tiebreaker over the Stars because they have two more wins. "It was a desperate effort by us," said Bertuzzi, who has 12 goals in 13 games. "Even though we're at the top of the standings, we're still a desperate team." Bertuzzi has 42 goals this season, matching teammate Markus Naslund and Ottawa's Marian Hossa . His third career hat trick and first this season gives him 86 points, one more than he had last season.

SCARBOROUGH,CAN Taking over the No. 1 jobfrom Damian Rhodesin the heat of a playoff race and being voted as NHL's player of the month for April with more shutouts (three) in 10 days than you've ever had in your entire NHL career, was the Hollywood-like story of Ron Tugnutt in 1996-97. A year during which he also signed an interesting contract with the Sens to add a happy ending to the story. Things continued to go well for "Tugger" in 1997-98 as he bested Rhodes with a 2.25 GAA, starting almost as many games. Tugnutt's road to the NHL has been long and arduous. Drafted 81st overall by the Quebec Nordiques after the second of his three seasons of junior hockey with Peterborough (OHL) in 1996, Tugnutt was named to the league's first all-star team with 21 wins and an OHL-leading 2.79 GAA in 1986-87. Tugnutt then spent five seasons in Quebec, starting a career-high 56 games in 1990-91, before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers in 1992, in a deal that saw Martin Rucinsky join the Nords. He spent one season with Edmonton and was claimed by Anaheim in the 1993 expansion draft. He was once again shopped around in 1994 and landed in Montreal in exchange of Stephan Lebeau.

I'm more relaxed here in general.
The easiest part for me is putting on
the equipment and going out to play.
Well, it's been somewhat of a seesaw
    battle throughout my whole career.
I think that you go through a lot of
adversity, but I'm a believer, and that just makes you stronger. Although you go through tough times, it makes the good times that much better... There's nothing better than winning. It's a great feeling when you win. The purchase of the motorcycle is on hold. [he had been in two car accidents, suffered two cracked ribs in a boating accident] I'm hoping for a bench clearing brawl during the warm up so I can go out and grab his stick. [on Gretzky's last game in Canada against the Ottawa Senators] We're all a bunch of children... Everyone wants that edge.

A backup for much of his career, Tugnutt displayed his ability in 1996-97 after signing with the Ottawa Senators as a free agent. In his first year with the Senators, Tugnutt finished 17-15-1, his first winning season in the NHL. The following year, he became an All-Star, finishing 22-10-8 with a stellar 1.79 goals-against average to lead the NHL. It was the best goals-against since Tony Esposito recorded a 1.77 in 1971-72. The Senators traded Tugnutt, along with Janne Laukkanen, to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Tom Barrasso in 2000, and Columbus signed him as a free agent July 4, 2000. The Stars traded for Tugnutt in 2002. Tugnutt was drafted 81st overall at the 1986 NHL Entry Draft by the Quebec Nordiques.
