Over the course of the season, the team developed into a cohesive unit after stumbling during mid season. The last ten games of the season, the team recorded a slate of 7-1-2. The season opened at Army as Avon skated to a 7-5 victory over the Army JV. Adam Swain tallied twice and Bill Palmer had 2 assists. In the first home game, Avon blitzed Albany Academy 11-1 behind Craig Irwin’s hat trick and 2 goal games from Matt Burto and Bill Palmer. Taft skated away with a 3-0 win as the Avon shooters were stymied by the Taft goaltender. A 4-0 whitewashing of Trinity-Pawling, saw AJ Bucchino grab the shutout while Adam Blanchette, Mark Noble, Adam Swain, and Matt Burto scored. Matt Lashoff was the only Avon skater to score in a 6-1 loss to a powerful Deerfield team. In the first round of the Avon Christmas Classic, Bucchino spun his second shutout of the season and Burto (2) and Chris Hussey scored the goals in the 3-0 win over Gunnery. The next day, Scott Haskell performed well in the goal as Avon topped Kent 5-2. Later in the evening, Avon whipped Tabor 5-3 behind 2 goals from Burto and singletons from Swain, Irwin, and Tobias Salmelainen. In the Championship game the next day, Avon was unable to overcome a tenacious St. Paul’s team. Mark Noble was the only Winged Beaver to tally in the 3-1 loss.

Wells, now in his fourth season on the Saint staff and a former Saint player, becomes the first associate head coach in the history of the Saint hockey program. "The new position is in recognition of what Chris means to the program, both in terms of what he has accomplished since his return to Canton and in terms of his professional development," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "I am really pleased that we are able to recognize his contributions to his alma mater in this manner." Chris joined the Panthers November 19th of the 1996-97 season. He was acquired from Pittsburgh in a trade involving "fan favorite" Stu Barnes and Jason Woolley. He has yet to play a complete season with the Panthers, as Wells has been struggling with a nagging groin injury over the past 2 seasons. However, in his time with the Panthers he has show steady improvement, a great work ethic, and tremendous promise as a checking/defensive forward.
