He’s always there to help those in need
December 1, 2002 By CHUCK CLARINO Herald Staff For Wendell Tilden, working behind the scenes as a volunteer at Rutland sporting events or helping the Red Cross isn’t about gaining recognition or receiving thanks. It’s about dedication. The soft-spoken 66-year-old has volunteered at various times throughout his life but, since he retired in 1995 from New England Telephone, Tilden has given increasingly of his time and energy — simply because it’s the right thing to do. He is a steadfast volunteer for the Mount St. Joseph Athletic Association, even though his children didn’t go to school at Mount St. Joseph Academy. He puts in hours at St. Peter’s field so the young athletes from MSJ and American Legion Post 31 have a beautiful place to play football and baseball. All the while, Tilden has become increasingly involved with the American Red Cross. “He does an unbelievable amount of stuff for us,” says Cindy Hahn, director of emergency services for the Red Cross in this region. “Every time you turn around, there he is.” Tilden so distinguished himself with the Red Cross that he was awarded the Exceptional Volunteer Service Award for 2001, an honor voted on by fellow volunteers.

Dragons dump Barrie on Grizzlies
By Kevin Iole
Review-Journal
The Utah Grizzlies took a calculated risk by acquiring center Len Barrie from the San Antonio Dragons on Friday in exchange for left wing Sean O'Brien.
WENDELL ROLLS The end of Wendell Young's career is much nearer than the beginning, the Chicago Wolves goaltender says. Young, 34, said he plans to play no more than two seasons beyond this one and perhaps just one.
PICARD TO BLUES Grand Rapids' title hopes suffered a serious blow when left wing Michel Picard, the team's leading scorer and a league MVP candidate, signed an NHL offer sheet with the St. Louis Blues on Jan. 3.
HEINS SIGNS Kansas City defenseman Shawn Heins, who had emerged in the early going as one of the league's top NHL prospects, signed a contract on Jan. 5 with the San Jose Sharks.
TIDBITS In another salary move, San Antonio dealt highly regarded left wing Dave Chyzowski to Kansas City for right wing Brett Cullaton and loaned ex-Thunder goaltender Pokey Reddick to the Blades for the rest of the season. ... After threatening not to report to Manitoba, center Michel Mongeau finally relented and reported to the Moose after his trade from Quebec. ... Chicago suffered a key loss when the Toronto Maple Leafs recalled center Jamie Baker. ... Goaltender Patrick Lalime had a 1.98 goals-against average for Grand Rapids in December, but because of a lack of support, was just 1-2-2. Lalime was the loser in two 1-0 games, one of which came in a shootout.

Darwitz's hat trick powers U.S. women's hockey team
LOS ANGELES TIMES Originally published Sunday, February 17, 2002 WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah The American kids are taking over. At this rate the United States women's hockey squad will be known as Teen USA. Natalie Darwitz, 18, had a hat trick Saturday in the United States' 5-0 victory over Finland. She's part of a brigade of young players making a name for themselves in this Olympic tournament, including fast-talking, fast-moving forward Julie Chu, 19, solid defenseman Lyndsay Wall, 16, and Krissy Wendell, a magician with the puck who turned 20 in September. "They're fantastic," said teammate A.J. Mleczko, 27. "Natalie and Krissy have been with the team for three years. Everyone says, 'Oh, these young players stepping in.' They stepped in a long time ago. You've got somebody like Julie Chu, she's been with us for two years. Lyndsay Wall has only been with us since August. It's phenomenal. I guess amazing is a good word. Every once in a while, you step back and you think how young they are. That makes you kind of appreciate where they are. I hate to put pressure on them, but I expect miracles out of them."

Well, outside of maybe a few urinals in the terrace-level bathrooms and a box of sunflower seeds in the locker room, nothing. And that's a problem. Although they don't play in a small market, the Tigers have turned into a typical small-market team. They trade or lose their top players (e.g. Jeff Weaver and Mark Redman) for cheaper options because they can't re-sign them and are basically left with a Triple-A squad.

She broke boundaries with Lightning stint
    By JAY CRIDLIN
published September 15, 2002 Jan. 19, 2002: Pascal Rheaume, a forward for the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers, set career highs and franchise records with four goals and five points in a single game against the Florida Panthers. That night, the spotlight had finally fallen on another member of the Rheaume family. And no one was happier than Pascal's older sister. "I got a message on my phone about the game," said Manon Rheaume, formerly of the Tampa Bay Lightning. "I was so excited, I couldn't go to bed." There was a time when Manon was the focus of the media's attention. Her name was scrawled into the history books on Sept. 23, 1992, when she stepped on the ice to play goalie for the Lightning in a preseason game, becoming the first and only woman to play in a major men's sports league. The decade that has passed since Rheaume's debut has brought an explosion of women's sports: professional leagues in women's basketball and soccer, and women's softball and ice hockey have become Olympic events.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty played hockey Thursday night as part of his inauguration week activities. His Team Minnesota defeated a team captained by former Gov. Wendell Anderson by a 6-2 score. (MPR Photo/Marisa Helms) Gov. Tim Pawlenty put politics on ice Thursday night, at least for a few hours at the Governor's Inaugural Hockey Game in South St. Paul. Despite some trash-talking leading up to the event, the match-up was all in good fun and for the love of the game. The final score Pawlenty's Team Minnesota beat former Gov. Wendell Anderson's Minnesota Old Timers 6-2.

Posted on Tue, Feb. 12, 2002 U.S. women overwhelm Germany, 10-0
By TOM POWERS Saint Paul Pioneer Press WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah As if to make a formal declaration of superiority, the U.S. women's hockey team unleashed a frightening barrage of two-on-one rushes en route to an emphatic 10-0 victory over Germany in its Olympic opener. The furious attack began right from the opening face-off and lasted a full 60 minutes, during which the Team USA outshot the Germans 57-8. Asked later what it would take to beat the Americans, coach Rainer Nittel said: "Ten years of hard work." Team USA's best line consisted of two Minnesota youngsters, Natalie Darwitz of Eagan and Krissy Wendell of Brooklyn Park, and veteran Cammi Granato, who has been the public face of women's hockey over the years. The combination of something old and something new proved very effective. "They keep me young," Granato said with a laugh. "They are a lot of fun to play with and they really keep my going."

Jim Norman /Chronicle Wendell Young was sharp in Monday's
IHL All Star Game, turning away
    nine shots in 10 minutes.
The Chicago Wolves defeated the IHL All-Star Team Monday evening at the AllState Arena, shutting them out 4-0. Chicago, who stood at a 15-21-3 prior to the All-Star break, were not expected to win this matchup, which pits the previous season's Turner Cup Champion-the Wolves-against a team of the league's best and brightest players. Lately, the Wolves are hardly playing like the championship team that they were last year, so how could they possibly beat a team of All-Stars?
With slick playmaking, standout goaltending, and overall great teamwork, that's how. The Wolves proved to be more than a match for the IHL All-Stars.
A big reason for that was their goaltending. Wolves goalies Wendell Young, Richard Shulmistra, and 19-year-old Rick DiPietro stopped a combined 34 shots for the shutout.
Fan favorite Wendell Young started the game for the Wolves playing the first 10:55 of the game. During that stretch the All-Stars outplayed the Wolves, but Young was sharp, turning away all nine shots he faced. The remainder of the game was split between Shulmistra, who stopped 24 shots, and DiPietro, who stopped ten shots. DiPietro-the NHL's first overall draft pick in the 2000 draft-also earned the Rising Star award for being the first-time All-Star who made the most valuable contribution to his team. After his performance Monday, you can see why the New York Islanders (the Wolves NHL affiliate) chose him first overall; DiPietro, 19, showed great poise against players older and much more experienced than him.

Sept. 26, 2002 by Linda Poncin The Mavericks open their fifth season this year, returning eight letterwinners off of last year's 4-26-2 squad. MSU will be looking to improve on last year's 1-22-1 mark in Western Collegiate Hockey Association games and a seventh-place finish in the 2001-02 conference standings. With 12 returnees from the previous season, the 2002-03 campaign will undoubtedly mean a "changing of the guard" personnel-wise, but with head coach Jeff Vizenor heading into his second season with the Mavericks, it should also mean another step in his plan towards competitive success. "I think we're looking for continued improvement." said Vizenor. "Our expectations have been raised. I've gotten to know the personnel better and them me, so we feel that the next realistic goal for this team is to get into the Final Five play-offs."
