Cohen, 17, who finished just off the podium at the 2002 Winter Olympics and World Championships, believes that Tarasova's expertise will help her in her bid for a medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. She said she also expects to benefit from "the more-structured, intense training environment" in Newington where she will move with her parents and younger sister.

It's happening on a sheet of ice at the Salt Lake Ice Center. The combatants are a couple of American high school teenagers in figure skates teenagers striving for the same goal. Sixteen-year-old Sarah Hughes of Great Neck, N.Y., and Sasha Cohen, 17, of Laguna Niguel, Calif., are aware of the history in front of them. They know that since the mid-1990s, the ice has been Michelle Kwan's kingdom. She has won everything the sport has to offer, including four world titles and six U.S. championships. Everything but an Olympic gold medal. Kwan, 21, is in first place after Tuesday's short program. If she wins tonight's long program, the title is hers.

This year the standard of the skating wasn't particularly high, but the winners in each discipline gave world-class performances. Alisa Drei of Finland didn't let the home crowd down, skating to a silver medal. Her programs lacked difficulty, but unlike the rest of the ladies, she did two somewhat clean performances and it was enough to land her in second. "I can't believe I did so well. This is a major surprise", she said. The Russian-born skater has only been on the ice since August. Suffering from nephritis throughout last season, she was hospitalized in Moscow for three months in the spring. Third place went to Viktoria Volchkova of Russia.
