By Joseph Erbentraut
I attended the 2001 Stars on Ice show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the night was filled with many unusual occurences and many wonderful performances as well. First, after a long drive in fog to get there, we found our seats amazingly an hour before show time, and by the time 7:30 had rolled around, they announced: "Due to weather and travel conditions, the show will begin 15 minutes late"... Okay I can handle that I thought. Then 15 minutes went by, and then "Due to the weather conditions mentioned earlier, Kurt Browning 's participation in tonight's show will be limited". So in other words, Kurt couldn't make it for the first half, since he was on a plane. They covered his parts nicely, however, and the show went on as planned, except that I still have yet to see his "Nyah" program. Well anyways, after the crowd settled down after that news, the show began.
The skaters all came out in small groups or one by one from the tunnel, and then they formed a circle at the far end of the ice for the opening to "Let's Get it On". I really liked seeing this program live, and it really is well choreographed, and a very good preview of what was to come. Next

nutcracker on ice Steven has stared in the classic show, Nutcraker on Ice. The show ran in the UK over Christmas 95. If anyone saw the show I'd be grateful if you could send me a review. Below is the advertisment and text from the press release: One of the world's most beloved Holiday fairy tales is retold through the dazzling performances of Olympic figure skating gold medalists Oksana Baiul and Viktor Petrenko in "Nutcracker On Ice". Supporting the all-star cast, in the colourful story of Clara (Oksana Baiul) her vivid memories of a magical Christmas filled with The Sugar Plum Fairy and Waltzing Flowers in the Land of the Snow Queen, Snowflakes and Candyland. Led by her magical godfather Drosselmeyer (Viktor Petrenko), Clara begins an enchanting journey through this Holiday fantasy worl with her Cavalier Prince. Baiul, the elegent, teenage, ice skating superstar who stunned the world with her dramatic come-from-behind Olympic gold medal performance at Lillehammer in 1994, headlines this dramatic on-ice recreation of the cherished Nutcracker story. Petrenko won the ice skating gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville. Also featuring the current National British Mens Ice-Skating Champion Steven Cousins as the Nutcracker Prince.

2001 American Open Figure Skating Review
December 6, 2001
Article © Louis DiCesari The brainchild of former U.S. medallist Scott Williams, the American Open is the only professional competition that is truly open to all professional skaters. As host Brian Boitano put it, it is a "competition for the skaters run by the skaters." The scoring system is a unique hybrid with six former skaters assigning scores solely to individual categories, such as jumps, footwork, and originality, and three "celebrity" judges who assign scores based solely on audience appeal.
This year's edition of the American Open takes place in a full-size arena, the First Union Center in Philadelphia, for the first time. The field is also the most competitive to date, with five Olympic or World medallists competing. Night One-Technical Programs The event began with the dance competition, where 1998 Olympic silver medallists Anjelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsiannikov took first place with 69.1 points out of a possible 70, the second-highest score earned among any of the competitors. Performing many of the required elements of an eligible free dance, such as a clockwise circular footwork in closed position, Krylova and Ovsiannikov danced with joy and precision to the soundtrack from "Dr. Zhivago." Even a minor bobble on their opening lift was an insignificant error that didn't stop two of the three audience judges from awarding a perfect 10.0.
Following the dance event, the ladies took to the ice. In the first group, Caryn Kadavy put down a challenge with her crowd-pleasing "Lion King" program, completing a double axel, triple loop-turn-double toe combination, and double flip to earn a final score of 67.1. After an excellent warmup, Olympic bronze medallist Lu Chen fell on her triple loop but rebounded to land a triple toe and double axel. Nevertheless, it was not enough to put her ahead to Kadavy, who took her lead into the second group.

... Webrings Skate the Nation: Moncton, New Brunswick June 2, 1998 By Ally Cunningham On Tuesday June 2, at the Moncton Coliseum, was Skate the Nation by Oceanspray. I had been planning on attending this show since April. A couple of friends from school were going to drive up from Maine, to Canada to see the show with me. We were planning on camping but due to the weather- our plans got slightly changed! The Smooch: Brian Orser skated to a new program that I hadn't seen before. It was called 5 Months, 2 Weeks and 2 Days. He did a clean program but was struggling with his jumps. He singled most of them- and you could tell by the look on his face after the jump that I didn't think he was pleased with them... but to me- he did a great job! After touring as much as he has this year, I wonder how he does it. After Brian was Elizabeth Manly skating to Fly by Celine Dion. I had seen this program with Tour of Champions early this winter, and she has done more with it. Her jumps were good... It was very nice program for her. She did great. Fever: Josee, Kurt and the "Muses" which I think were Michelle McDonald and Steven Cousins call came out during Fever to set the mood. Leaving Kurt solo on the ice, he performed Are You Lonesome Tonight. He always does a great job with this program, but on that particular night- it was the best I had seen it! I was very impressed. His jumps were clean and huge! Josee came out skating to "Too Much". She would skate around Kurt flirting with him- very much sex appeal in this program. After Kurt and Josee both skates to Surrender. They were so cute together on the ice. They seemed to be having so much fun- both smiling and laughing. Seeing that was almost as fun seeing them skate together.

Canada Says Farewell to Scott Hamilton
Stars On Ice Tour Makes its Way Across the Country Story by Lyndsey March for iskater.com
This year's Canadian Chrysler Stars On Ice has a special meaning as it's the 'Scott Hamilton Farewell Tour'. The sixth stop for the show was in Kitchener, Ontario, and it was also the cast's third in a row. Presumably tired, you'd never be able to detect the skaters' fatigue, as it was clear from the beginning they were skating for Scott Hamilton. Opening the show to "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye, each skater and duo had a chance to show an impressive movement. Centered around Hamilton, the cast left the ice while he stayed and performed to "I've Got You" by James Brown. Skating with his infamous humourous style, the audience loved it as Hamilton interacted with the crowd, drawing them into the performance. Finishing the program, Hamilton stood on the ice as a young skater came out performing to "A Song for You" also by James Brown. With a gesture of his hand, Hamilton directed the boy's attention to Maria Butyrskaya and the beginning of a section entitled, 'New Moon In the Old Moon's Arms'.

or what it is like to attend a skating show in Germany

On May 1st, I went on my 5 1/2 hour lasting trip to Oberhausen (by train). I had a nice journey and even managed to work on my studies. To be honest, I worked more than I would have done, if I had stayed at home. Thus, I decided to travel by train every once in a while - in order to improve my marks;-)
Fortunately, I already knew about the show not even coming close to kind of a "dream come true". Otherwise, I would have been sooo disappointed when I bought my program and looked through its cast list for the first time: no Katia, no Ilia, no Elena & Denis (That meant no "Four Corners". Sigh...), no Roz, no Tara, no Lu Chen and so on. I suppose this was the strangest cast ever...
My pen pal Simone (She was my "host" as she lives close to Oberhausen. I would like to thank her for everything...) and I, we had very good seats. Fourth row (which means in Germany a much better sight than first row seats as there are some high railings in front of the first row) at the long side of the rink near a corner which turned out to be a *quite* important place later in the show.
Just like last year, we felt quite young (we sat between two couples who could easily be our grandparents - just like the rest of the audience...) and felt a little "superior" as the only thing the rest of the crowd knew about figure skating seemed to be that it is the sport of Katarina Witt. But who is this boy called Kurt Browning?!?!?! At least, they didn't mix him up with Brian Boitano like they did last year...
