AP SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Todd Eldredge put his hands on top of his head and stared into the crowd, a dazed look on his face. He hadn't even been looking for a medal this time. Two clean programs and he could walk away knowing he finally had the Olympic experience he's sought for 10 years. But even that satisfaction seems too much to ask. "I felt great, which is what makes it so disappointing," Eldredge said after a disastrous performance in Tuesday night's short program left him in ninth place. "That's the way it goes, sometimes." Fellow American Timothy Goebel is in third place, while Michael Weiss is eighth. The free skate, worth two-thirds of the final score, is Thursday night. Eldredge is one of the best skaters in U.S. history, with six national championships and the 1996 world title to his name. But the Olympics are his personal demon. In 1992, nursing a back injury and out of competitive shape, he finished 10th. Two years later, the flu stripped him of his strength at nationals and he didn't make the squad for the Lillehammer Games. And in '98, ranked second in the world and coming off his fifth U.S. title, he fell apart in the free skate and finished fourth.

Heinz Kluetmeier Shortly after competing in the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City finishing in sixth place in his third Winter Games Todd Eldredge announced his retirement from the competition and joined the professional Stars on Ice tour. It wasn't an easy decision, he said in a telephone interview in advance of his appearance Saturday at Arco Arena, but one based on the reality of a skater's life. "I was 30 at the time I'm 31 now and 30-31 for a figure skater is getting up there a bit," Eldredge said. "I figured I'd had my run, been to three Olympics (finishing 10th and fourth in his first two appearances), and there wasn't too much left except to try to win an Olympic medal and that gets harder and harder every year." The most immediate benefit of retirement was time off, the skater said. "I took a month off this summer, which was the first time I'd done that. It was great. Just to stay home was like a vacation." Eldredge has a five-year contract with the ice show and also intends to engage in professional competitions.

Skate America 1998 Detroit, MI Ladies Results Men's Results Pairs Results Dance Results Overview Detroit, Michigan; back again. This year's Skate Detroit ... I mean Skate America ... is the third installment of Skate America to be held in Detroit; the first two being in 1995 and 1997. The field is a little weak in most of the events, but the men's event promises to be a good show with Yagudin, Stojko, Urmanov, and Weiss all here. Skate America, like all the Grand Prix event - formerly the Champions Series - is suffering from the ISU placing its new "Open" events in direct competition with the Grand Prix. Many of the top eligible skaters have opted for an easy payday in the Open events, leaving the Grand Prix a little thin. In the ladies event Maria Butyrskaya should have an easy time of it, with her nearest challenger likely to be Anna Rechnio. Rechnio showed moment of brilliance at the end of last season, but she is inconsistent and did not do well at Goodwill Games. Nicole Bobek is beginning yet another comeback attempt, with her self stated goal here to tune up her new programs and work on consistency. She is back again with coach Richard Callaghan with whom she had her greatest success in 1995. Return to title page
