Get it? Lilly-Hammer. Lillihammer Olympics. Thanks for the inspiration Tom Weir! Now first of all, don't be fooled by the title of this page. I am not here to take sides. This is how the media portrayed our dynamic duo, not I. My figure skating scrapbooks give equal time to each skater and I intend to do that here too. I like both skaters for different reasons. I have also decided to do this page because there is no information out on the net about these two women (unless you want to count some tasteless pictures I was unfortunate enough to come across). I think both of these women deserve a little time and a little recognition for surviving one of the most closely followed dramas in recent history. I don't really care who was right and who was wrong. It is over and done with and one person's opinion isn't going to mean a whole lot in the greater scheme of things. As one L.A.-based press agent in the entertainment industry said yesterday, "It's not going to be classy things. But the money's not always in class." Harding pleaded guilty Wednesday to a felony charge of hindering the investigation into the kneecapping of rival skater Nancy Kerrigan. Under the agreement, Harding received a lengthy list of penalties requiring her to perform community service, pay a total of $160,000 in fines and costs, submit to three years of supervised probation and undergo a psychiatric evaluation and court-ordered therapy, if necessary. Why Female Ice Skaters Suck and Female TV Characters Rock the problem Every winter season kicks up a new crop of prime-time ice skating specials like Ice Wars , knee-bashing good times and back flips for the asking. Now, I'm no skating critic, but since the latest proliferation of skating-as-entertainment took over a chunk of last winter's programming, I feel obliged to comment on this issue. Women skaters suck. They're boring. Men have cornered the market on bravado, it would seem. And they have a monopoly on a strong sense of self, as well. Even the chicks with chutzpah are far below par when it comes to putting on a good show. I blame the idealized portrait of a frou-frou female ice skater they must aspire to, the perfect figure-8 ice princess. Don't they know our GenerationX-ified, brave-new-world, liberated girrrl finds this kind of fragile character obsolete? Their ornately sequined show-frocks are complicated. Unfortunately, their performances are not. I'm very curious to know what kind of severe pressure from coaches, parents, the weird tribe of skating itself, forces a woman skater into being typically graceful and frilly? Even gutsy broads like Kristy Yamaguchi and Katarina Witt are dull. Katarina has attitude for sure, and Kristy has done some creative, often beautiful performances (her recent "duet" with Sarah Brightman was noteworthy). But they don't compare to the Kurt Brownings and Brian Boitanos of this skating world. And the answer to a hyper-graceful, cliche femininity isn't a hyper-buff cliche masculinity (

Martino has been ice skating for 65 years and has been skating at the Ice Chalet since it opened in 1978. He was part of a large group of Cupertino residents who protested against the closure of the rink. In a passionate debate, the ice rink issue rocked Cupertino politics when Vallco announced it would close the rink in 1986. "There were a lot of restaurants near the rink," Martino said. "And they wanted to add a movie theater where the rink is, so when families finished their dinners, they could catch a movie. "Tonight was probably my greatest skate ever," Hughes marveled. "Going into it, I didn't really think I had a chance for a medal, let alone a gold, because I know the competition is really difficult here." Born May 2, 1985, Hughes was named after the famous judge, Sarah Hughes, who swore in former President LYNDON JOHNSON . Hughes' father, JOHN , built an ice skating rink in the family backyard, so his children could experience the joy he'd had as a kid playing ice hockey and skating with friends.
