Slovak Figure Skating is 125 Years Old FROM SLIVA TO SABOVCIK Slovak figure skating celebrates its 125th anniversary. It is among the oldest sports in Slovakia and it is also one of the most successful, because in its trophy case there are ten gold, four silver and seven bronze medals from Europen Championships; three gold, four silver and one bronze medal from World Championships; and, one silver and one gold medal from the Olympics. The history of this sport dates from the second half of the 19th century. There was a piece of news in the "Pressburger Zeitung" of December 12th 1871 saying that the plenary meeting of the figure skating club in Bratislava was going to take place at 11 o'clock on December 14th 1871. However, the history of skating in our country began several millennia ago. This has been documented by the more than 100 artifacts identified as bone skates which have been found in Slovakia. The best preserved bone skate was found in Vesele near Piestany. It is estimated to be about 5 thousand years old. The skate was identified by G.V.Childe, a British archaeologist, and J. Dulka, a Slovak specialist and it is housed in the Spa Museum in Piestany. It is noteworthy that the first regular European competition held in a sheltered space was the competition that took place in the Dobsinska Ice Cave on July 1893.

Kurt Browning is Canada's Four Time Canadian and World Figure Skating Champion (1989-1991, 1993). He was also a three time Olympic Team Member (Calgary 1988, Albertville 1992, Lillehammer 1994). He was the first skater to land a quadruple jump (a quadruple toe loop) at the World Championships. This feat was achieved at the 1988 World Figure Skating Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Kurt announced his retirement from eligible ISU competition on March 2 1994. He is now under contract with The Discover Card/Chrysler Stars on Ice tour until 1998. He also performs in Canada's Skate the Nation tour a sister tour of Stars on Ice that tours smaller cities in Canada and features an all Canadian cast. 2. What about his Competitive Record?
