He's simply too busy to go to Nagano. Not that Boitano didn't have offers to do television or newspaper work, as he's done in the past. But the 1988 gold medalist has so much else on his schedule that the 1998 games weren't even a consideration. Boitano, whose "Holiday Skating Spectacular" with Kristi Yamaguchi, country music star Kathy Mattea and Broadway star Franc D'Ambrosio, will be televised New Year's Day on NBC, made a competitive comeback four years ago. A one-time exemption allowed by the International Skating Union opened the way for professionals, and former Olympic champions Boitano, Torvill and Dean, Viktor Petrenko and Katarina Witt took advantage of it. None won at Lillehammer. None will be heading to Japan. "It would just be such a pain and I'm having such a busy year and a busy time with touring and stuff like that," Boitano said. "With the production company and producing TV shows, it provides an outlet to do things I want to do creatively. "I have the pro competitions and the production company, and I hope to do four to five TV specials next year."

Americans tend to show their approval through body motion as well. So it was earlier this month, as Torvill, 29, and her skating partner, Christopher Dean, 28, ended the first show of their current US tour, when some 10,000 people in Buffalo’s Memorial Auditorium stood, cheered, and clapped until their hands were chafed. “Well, kids,” said a grateful member of their 16 person ice dancing troupe, “we’re in America!” So they are and so they will be touring 60 cities in four months with an international ensemble of young skaters. Combining the invention of the Broadway musical, the grace of ballet, and the speed of steel sliding across a smooth surface, they are zestfully - and often wittily - redefining that tired old branch of show business, the ice revue. Less gymnastic and acrobatic than pairs skating, ice dancing, which bears more than a passing resemblance to ballroom dancing, works its wonders within a smaller compass. It allows no high lifts, for example, and spins are limited to 1 1/2 turns. “The difference is like that between poetry and prose,” says Dick Button, the American skating impresario and Olympic figure skating star. “They are two different disciplines.
