While some of the seeded Skaters entered at the Cup of Russia have already qualified for the Final, to be held next February in Tokyo, Japan, others are just now entering the Grand Prix. Weiss, who was forced to withdraw from Skate America due to a stress fracture in his foot, is entering his first Grand Prix event of the season. Plushenko, who took gold at the Sparkassen Cup, will also be competing for points here, which is his first scoring event. Home News Biography Photo Galleries ... Contact Me Mike has fun with new blade You can buy the Freedom Blade from Mike's official online store Something is different about Michael Weiss. Since he began touring with Champions on Ice this season, audiences have seen him perform footwork that can only be described as magic. Michael does a spread eagle on his heels with the new blade. The crowd goes wild. Michael is skating on the brand new FREEDOM blade that is the brainchild of ice skating coach Nick Perna, who assists Weiss with his training. After skating on the new blades for just one week Michael said, "These blades add a whole new dimension to skating and give me the freedom to be as creative and innovative as I want." The aptly named blade allows skaters the freedom to perform intricate maneuvers on the heel that would normally cause the skaters to loose their balance and fall. This new design will allow the skaters to perform many new moves including cup splits while skating at speed and spread eagles on their heels. There are currently only four pairs of these blades in existence; however, John Watts Skates will soon be making them available to skaters all over the world. The prototypes are for now on experienced feet only, such as Michael, a two-time U.S. National Champion Weiss who is performing on these blades during the 86-city Champions on Ice Tour.

"It just seemed like there was an aura in the arena that was strange tonight," said Michael Weiss , winner of the championship men's event at the 2003 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships. "I've never seen that many things happen like that before. From somebody not finishing their program in competition, to hitting the wall, the names going up under somebody else's marks, I ran into the flower girl. This is figure skating. It’s drama. We provided it tonight!" In fourth after the short program, Weiss needed help to win the competition. After falling on his quad Lutz, two-footing the quad toe in his quad-triple toe combination and doubling his triple Axel, Weiss completed the other five triples. It turned out to be one of the best programs of the night, and the stars aligned perfectly enough to earn him his third U.S. title.
