Though Weiss failed to land his quadruple toe loop in warmup, he pulled off a quadruple toe loop-double toe loop combination with just a two-footed landing of the first. Despite an additional deduction for failure to complete eight revolutions on his flying camel spin, Weiss received marks as high as 5.9 for required elements in addition to seven 5.9s for presentation. Drawing a standing ovation from the audience, Weiss earned the first-place ordinals of all nine judges.

All Year Figure Skating Club was organized in 1939 by a small group of enthusiastic skaters under the leadership of Mrs. Ann Rork Getty at the Tropical Ice Gardens in Westwood Village. The club developed rapidly along with the popularity of the sport and held both Junior and Senior sessions. Among the club professionals were Eugene Mikeler, Hubert Sprott and Helen Gage Moore. Helen still teaches on club sessions today. In 1945 the Mercury Figure Skating Club lost its ice and was invited to share the Westwood rink. The two clubs then merged to become the All Year-Mercury FSC. After a short time Mercury FSC disbanded and the club again became known as All Year Figure Skating Club. The club suffered a severe setback in 1949, when the Westwood rink by this time known as the Sonja Henie Ice Palace was torn down to accommodate expansion of UCLA. Arrangements were made to conduct sessions at the Pan Pacific Arena, but a year later that rink discontinued its ice...and All Year FSC was again without a home. Through the courtesy of the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club, one session a week was acquired at Hollywood's Polar Palace.

Special to ABC Sports Online CLEVELAND The U.S. Figure Skating Championships is special for many reasons. Here in Cleveland, the people worked hard to land the nationals starting in 1993. It will be the third time that the nationals have been here and the first time since 1964, when Peggy Fleming won the first of her five national titles en route to becoming a household name. The nationals is an event that, probably more than any other, creates stars and previews the bright young skaters who are going to make names for themselves in the next couple of years. Without question, the women's competition will be the most exciting of the four disciplines. You've got Michelle Kwan, the elder stateswoman who is the odds-on favorite to win. But she has a wave of young teenagers to fend off. It seems as if a whole new generation has emerged at once. This week we are going to learn a lot about who might be serious contenders for the 2002 Olympic team.

Associated Press CLEVELANDThe only attempted quadruple jump was flawed, and so was the competition. The men's short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships was hyped as a high-flying, aerial circus. Instead, it looked more like amateur hour at the local rink. Defending champion Michael Weiss avoided disaster on an easy jump and is the leader heading into the final over local jumping sensation Timothy Goebel and teenager Matt Savoie following Thursday night's ragged performances. "For me to go out and have a good warmup, save the combo like that and be in first place was pretty good for me," said Weiss, who nearly touched the ice on his second jump, a triple axel, double toe loop combination.

"People look at you a little differently when you have that title. A lot of times people skate with a little bit more enthusiasm and a little more confidence, so it's good to have that title." Weiss fell early on his quadruple toe loop, but it didn't matter after he hit eight triple jumps, four in combination. He came to nationals a heavy favorite following runner-up finishes to Todd Eldredge the past two years, and he responded to the pressure with a strong showing.

1999 Mariposa Gala Barrie, Ontario, Canada August 12, 1999 Each August since 1989, the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie, Ontario has held an annual Gala, which benefits the local Kiwanis Club. The the skating show not only spotlights the club's senior and elite skaters, but also hosts some of the greatest skaters from Canada and around the world. This was my first Gala... and it went a bit like this: My friends and I went to the Mariposa Club the morning of the show for both elite practice sessions, which were a bit earlier than normal because of the dress rehearsal that day. In the morning session were Michael Hopfes (Germany), Marcus Leminen (Finland), Jennifer Robinson and Jeff Langdon (Canada), Takeshi Honda (Japan), and Trifon Zivanovic (US) among others. In the afternoon we had the additional honor of Brian Orser's presence, though he really just skated around he was yawning alot and seemed kinda tired. Kurt Browning was added on the Tuesday before the Gala, but did not attend the practice or dress rehearsal. The dress rehearsal was more like continuous runthroughs of the skaters' programs, and was held at the venue that the show was to be held in that evening, the Barrie Molson Centre. Steven Cousins, while unable to skate due to injury, was on the sidelines helping to organize things. Canadian pair team Kristy Sargeant and Kris Wirtz were also there, and we had the chance to meet Brian's dog, a pug named Dolce, who watched his master like a hawk from the stands where he was sitting with Brian's coach. Brian took Dolce on the ice later on as well.

The next jump was intended to be a Triple Axel-Triple Toe, while he cleanly landed the Triple Axel he was unable to attempt the Triple Toe. He doubled what was to have been a Triple Lutz. He did land a nice Triple Flip as well as a Double Axel. Near the end of the program he improvised a Triple Axel-Double Toe combination since he hadn't completed a combination to that point. And also pray for President George W. Bush and our nation's leaders in the effort to stop terrorism worldwide. We now continue with this website dedicated to Rosalynn Sumners. Roz performing to "Simply Irresitable" at Alberto VO5's Divas On Ice 2002, the all-female skating show that aired on NBC-TV on January 4, 2003. Roz, in my humble opinion, sold out on this routine! This other graphic was also created by Paula Slater. Thanks again, Paula! This is my salute to one of the finest, artistically-expressive figure skaters this century (seen performing at Reunion Arena the night of January 23, 1999, with Stars On Ice). The photo of Roz doing "Man, I Feel Like A Woman" (sung by Shania Twain) was taken by Ally Cunningham (thanks, Ally!) during an exhibition show at Simsbury, Connecticut in late October 1999. Roz does look like she is having SO much fun!

Todd Eldredge had doubled his quadruple jump. Tim Goebel had staggered out of his triple axel and wobbled out of his triple flip. No need to watch a full replay. ''I saw the elements I needed to see,'' Weiss concluded. So the defending champion played it safe and sane in last night's men's short program in the US Figure Skating Championships at the FleetCenter. And when the marks went up, Weiss had a leg up on his third straight title.

The 1999–2000 figure skating season may be over, but aside from watching and re-watching tapes of nationals, Worlds, and last year’s COI and SOI tours, there are a few competitions, exhibitions, and tours scheduled to keep die-hard fans busy. If you’re lucky enough to live in Paris, you can catch the tenth annual Miko Masters In Canada this weekend the 25th annual Scarboro Skate at the Scarboro Figure Skating Club (east Toronto) is sanctioned by both the Canadian and United States Figure Skating Associations and is open to all amateur skaters.
