U.S. Next at Germany on March 27, Then Home to Mexico on April 3 in Denver
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (March 10, 2002) - The U.S. Men's National Team continued its string of strong performances in 2002 this afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in front of a raucous, pro-American of 24,133 fans at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The lone U.S. goal came from midfielder Eddie Lewis, the third of his international career, as he earned Chevrolet Man of the Match honors for his play. The victory was the sixth of the year for the U.S., who have outscored their opponents 14-2 in 2002 while compiling a 6-1-1 record through eight games. The victory marked the first time the U.S. has ever won six of their first eight games in a calendar year. The victory marked the first time in nine games that the U.S. has beaten Ecuador, and, in fact, Lewis' goal was the first against the team after six straight shutouts dating back to 1984. "What I enjoyed the most out of this game today was that it was not a friendly type of game," said U.S. MNT head coach Bruce Arena. "Ecuador came out and played a hard 90 minutes. It had the look and smell of a World Cup qualifier out there. You have to play in games like this. When things don't go right, you have to find a way to win, and I think our guys did that. In our first eight games in 2002, I think we've shown marked improvement."

Select Teams Program
PURPOSE
The United States Adult Soccer Association's (USASA) Select Teams Program provides our players the opportunity to compete at the highest available level within the USASA, in addition to identifying and showcasing players for the next level of competition. The program not only provides competitions for individuals but also determines a Regional and National State Select Teams Champion. The program serves as training ground for the U-16 through U-23 U.S. National Teams. Additionally, the program has proven to be an important vehicle for the education and advancement of referees through valuable competitive game assisgnments. It also provides an opportunity for coaches to demonstrate their knowledge and ability in highly competitive game situations.

History
When the 1994 World Cup tournament was awarded to the United States, US Soccer promised to help establish a Division I outdoor soccer league as soon as possible after the tournament ended. World Cup USA Chairman Alan I. Rothenberg announced plans for Major League Soccer (MLS) on Dec. 17, 1993. Twenty-two cities submitted bids for teams. In October of 1995, it was announced that MLS would begin play in March of 1996 with ten teams: the Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, D. C. United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, MetroStars, New England Revolution, San Jose Clash, and Tampa Bay Mutiny. The Chicago Fire and Miami Fusion were added as expansion teams in 1998. The MLS originally had two conferences, but was reorganized into three divisions, with four teams each, in 2000. However, the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny were dropped before the 2002 season, and the league went back to the two-conference format. The MLS did away with the penalty shootout in 2000. If a game is tied after regulation time, the teams play two five-minute overtime periods. If the score is still tied, that's the final result.

Sanneh and Beasley make their mark early in "Nike Road to Korea"

May 13, 2002 - STM Staff United States MNT 2-1 UruguayScoring Summary: USA - Tony Sanneh (Jeff Agoos) 6th, DaMarcus Beasley (unassisted) 40, 1 URU - Sebastian Abreu (Alvaro Recoba) 60. A strong first half showing gave way to the characteristic shaky defending in the back line, that allowed two goals if you included the Sebastian Abreu goal disallowed in the second -half. The good news is that the team held onto their slim 2-1 lead and closed the match out. The win was the USA's fifth of the year against teams that have qualified for the 2002 World Cup. The U.S. is now riding a 8-0-1 overall record at home in 2002, and will look to continue the good vibes when they face Jamaica on Thursday at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Chevrolet Man of the Match DaMarcus Beasley played out of his skin, making slashing run after run at a beleaguered Uruguayan defense. After taking much abuse all game, he struck back by scoring the game-winner in the 40th minute. The home side opened up the scoring in the 6th minute when Jeff Agoos whipped in a corner kick former the left flank after some hard work by Beasley down the seam. Agoos drilled the ball at the near post where Tony Sanneh headed the ball past Uruguayan goalkeeper Gustavo Munua to give the U.S. a 1-nil lead.

For 4 United Players, Youth Soccer Shaped Their Games, Outlooks, Life
Leagues Instilled Fundamentals and a Love for the Sport By Steven Goff
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, May 28, 1999; Page D06 D.C. United's players range in age from 21 to 33. They come from four countries and 11 states, attended nine colleges and played for an untold number of semipro, minor league and indoor programs. But what almost all 23 players have in common is a vivid memory of their years competing in youth soccer a time spent making lifelong friends, learning about teamwork, developing individual skills and falling in love with the sport. Four United players with very different backgrounds a Latin American, a Canadian, a Texas product with foreign influences and a local standout recently shared some of their childhood memories: Midfielder Marco Etcheverry, 28, Santa Cruz, Bolivia The United captain's roots are in the famed Tahuichi Academy in his home town, which has produced dozens of Bolivian national team-caliber players, including United forward Jaime Moreno. Etcheverry remembers going to the city stadium with his brother when they were young to watch professional games. Before the matches, "We saw kids playing on the field. They were from Tahuichi. It was something I wanted to do," he said.

Agoos Includes Futsal in Busy Soccer Schedule
Before he played in the World Indoor Championship in Hong Kong in 1992, Jeff Agoos did not know much, if anything about Futsal. It was a brand new experience for him, but he adapted to the game quickly and is now a strong advocate of the sport. If his soccer schedule permits, Agoos will appear in the next FIFA World Championship, which will take place in Spain from Nov. 24 through December 11. The specific sites will be chosen in September. Futsal is the World Indoor Game. It is played without the use of dasherboards, and that caught Agoos by surprise when he first tried the game. "The first time I played Futsal was with the 1992 team, and it was interesting," he said "There's a lot of skill involved and a lot of tactics. We actually came into that whole thing as one of the favorites. The Futsal game is something that I had never had a chance to experience. It was totally different from anything I'd ever done. It was a combination of indoor and outdoor. In a very small environment. It was very difficult at first, but once we figured out the nuances we did pretty well. "It's a different game. It's not outdoor soccer. It's not indoor soccer the way we've played it in the U.S. I enjoyed it because it had more to do with outdoor soccer than indoor soccer with the boards did. I definitely enjoyed it."
