South Korea, China on course for last 8
BUSAN, Sept 30: South Korea enjoyed their second successive victory in the Asian Games soccer tournament Monday as they thrashed Oman 5-2 in group A to make almost certain of a place in the quarterfinals.
Goals from Cho Sung Hwan (24 minutes), Kim Du Hyan (50), Lee Dong Gook (61) and a brace from forward Lee Chon Soo (65 and 86) destroyed Oman as the Koreans, looking to build on their World Cup success dominated the match.
The host nation need just a point from their final group match against Malaysia to clinch a place in the last eight, though their huge goal difference means they should qualify as group winners in the unlikely event of a defeat.
The Koreans were full of running and sharp, incisive football that kept the Omanis on the back foot throughout the match and their crisp finishing ensured they wrapped up the points long before the end.
In the other group A match Malaysia beat the Maldives 3-1 thanks to a hat trick from Muhammad Shukor Adan. With Oman beating Malaysia 1-0 in their first group match, their final game against the Maldives will determine if they have a chance of qualifying as runner-up.

AFCC League New in Asia
by Hindol Goswami Asian Football Confederation Champions League is new to the Asian Football. Replacing the Asian Club Championship, the Asian Cup Winners'Cup and the Asian Super Cup it is launched in August 2002. The winning team will take home a first prize of US$500,000. Teams like Korea, Japan are already selected because of their international ranking. Other low rank teams are battling each other to achieve the goal. Almost fifty two soccer clubs were selected for AFCC League qualifying round where two Indian clubs Mohun Bagan and Churchill Brothers got room. AFCC league is formulated with the idea of European Club Championship contest. "This is a serious contest;" agrees Ranjan Mitra, Chief Executive of Mohun Bagan Club and says "we have just crossed a hurdle and there is waiting moredifficlt rivals whom we should face." Yes, Mohun Bagan and New Radiant of Maldives advanced to third Qualifying Round with contrasting victories on 22nd September. Before 20,000 fans, Mohun Bagan blew Saunders of Sri Lanka out of the tournament. They scored five goals where Saunders just one. For MB striker Baichung Bhutia (2), John Eke (1), Josh Barreto (1) and Jayanta Biswas (1) were the contributor and for Saunders only contributor was striker Pradip Kumara. New Radiant however had to slog to a hard earned 3-2 aggregate win over Sri Lanka Air Force.

Indian hopes are injured in Asian Games Football Tournament
by Hindol Goswami Football critic of India and South East Asia were in hope that India could have done little to worry China in Asian battleground. Alas! Indian football team disappointed them and continued the same ballad of wrong pass, and faulty heads in Asian Games football tournament. The pin if their coffin was the cruel decision of penalty in the first half. Chinese striker Yu Tao downed Indian coffin with a deliberate efforts. Yu Tao grabbed both goals as China booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Asian Games football tournament on Thursday and left India facing a nervous wait before they discover if they can join them as a best runner-up. China beat India 2-0 in the final Group C match with Yu scoring both his goals in the first half to make it to the last eight with a maximum nine points from three games. They will probably take on Japan for a place in the semi-finals while India's fate now depends on the outcome of the match between Bahrain and Palestine on Saturday with the Gulf side probably needing to win by three goals if they are to take the best runners-up slot.

India’s star striker Bhaichung Bhutia was sent off as his side crashed to a 1-0 loss to the United Arab Emirates in Group Eight of Asia’s World Cup qualifying tournament in Al Ain.
The Bury forward was given his marching orders 10 minutes into the second half and his dismissal proved to be the turning point in the game.
Eight minutes later the UAE took the lead through striker Subait Khater and Sukhvinder Singh’s side was unable to claw their way back into the tie.
The win was revenge for a defeat inflicted on Henri Michel’s side in Bangalore earlier in the month and puts the UAE on top of the group, two points ahead of Yemen, who play Brunei on Friday.
India are in third, behind Yemen on goal-difference. For more details click here

It's not just cricket Rina Chandran As soccer, tennis, motor racing and other sports grow in popularity, advertisers are realising that hitching their brands to them is a good way to be `with it'. IT was 37 degrees C in the shade at 4.30 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, in Chennai, and Chepauk stadium was filled with 15,000 enthusiastic fans. Only, it wasn't a cricket match they had come to see, but the FIFA World Cup final, telecast live on the giant screen in the stadium. Football in cricket-crazy Chennai, that too on the hallowed grounds of Chepauk? Not a momentary lapse of reason but a sign of the times, industry experts say, and one which advertisers and networks are cashing in on. TEN Sports, which was launched in April this year and had the rights to the FIFA World Cup, has a line-up of WWE, golf, tennis, hockey and bowling. On ESPN-Star Sports, the English Premier League matches and Formula 1 races are a big draw. The Tata group, which signed on Narain Karthikeyan early this year, is also the title sponsor of the ATP Tennis Tournament; McDowell endorses two football clubs and recently sponsored an inter-club golf tournament. And a whole host of companies are revving up at the racetrack.

“Indian footballers are equally good in skills”: Baichung Indian football captain Baichung Bhutia in a free and frank talk, reveals his heart and comments on affairs in Indian football. His story is much similar to the ‘make believe’ Bollywood films. As the hero of such films, more often than not, comes from a small town and in no time mesmerises all in a big city with his hidden talents, he also comes down from Sikkim and makes a permanent place in the hearts of the people with his superb soccer display and becomes another star on the Indian sporting horizon. Today, having numerous admirers he is the most sought-after sportsperson in the country after Sachin Tendulkar and Viswanathan Anand. He is none other than Baichung Bhutia, captain of Indian football team and the first Indian to play professional league in England. Beyond doubt, Baichung has come a long way. The boy who started playing football just for fun, found himself in the big league in unusually quick time and since then, there is no looking back for him. He played for the famous East Bengal club of Kolkata and JCT of Punjab, represented India even before getting his driving licence. Was it a smooth journey to the top? Why he left the country and went to England to play professional football? What does

"When the referee was showing the yellow card, I was just on the scene. In the second incident, both of us (he and the UAE player) were responsible. It was fifty-fifty mistake from both sides," Bhutia said. "Everybody knows what happened in that match. I suspect some foul play behind the referee's decision," he said. He, however, ruled out appealing against the decision of referee Abdul Hamid Halim of Malaysia at any international forum. Veteran striker I.M.Vijayan echoed his captain's view, saying Bhutia's mistake did not deserve a red card.

var page="sportsnews" Feature World Cup glory a distant dream for India Thousands of fans in the soccer-mad city of Calcutta lived a World Cup dream for a few hours recently, though they knew it might never come true. Cheering and jostling, they packed a large stadium to watch top Indian striker Baichung Bhutia carry the FIFA World Cup trophy atop a decorated elephant.
But the victory procession was make-believe; a clever sales pitch by a World Cup sponsor putting soccer's ultimate prize on display in key Indian cities ahead of the competition itself, which kicks off in Japan and South Korea on May 31.
Asia's first soccer World Cup has whipped up a frenzy across India and revived echoes of past glory around the country which set the ball rolling in the region more than half a century ago.
India were the first Asian Games soccer champions in 1951 and won again in 1962. In a country where soccer roots run deep, millions of cricket fans will shift their traditional loyalties during May and June.
Sales of colour television sets are soaring and many companies hope to cash in on soccer madness in the world's second most populous country which is home to more than a billion people.

Au ensures there's no place for Home
First Published: Oct 22, 2002
Hong Kong international striker Au Wai-lun steered South China into the final qualifying round of the AFC Champions League when he nodded home the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Singapores Home United. Au equalised six minutes from time to cancel out a first half effort from Egmar Goncalves and give his team a 3-2 aggregate win to set up a likely clash against Japanese club Shimizu S-Pulse. Indias Mohun Bagan and Thailands Osotspa also made it through to the final qualifying round of the inaugural three-million-dollar event after getting the better of Valencia of Maldives and Indonesian club Persita Tangerang respectively. Osotspa were held to a goalless draw at home but qualified thanks to their 1-0 first leg victory while Mohun Bagan clinched a 3-0 win over Valencia for a 5-2 aggregate. South China team manager Leung Chou-chi admitted his side were lucky and praised Home United. "They were by far the better side from start to finish," said Leung.
