Fergie challenge to Bosnich
by David Anderson
ALEX FERGUSON has challenged Mark Bosnich to fight for his first-team place on the day Massimo Taibi became the first casualty of the increased competition among Manchester United’s goalkeepers.
Ferguson is not bothered if Bosnich might have been upset by the arrival of World Cup and European Championship winner Fabien Barthez in a £7.8million deal from Monaco.
All the United boss cares about is getting the best out of his players by ensuring that competition throughout his side is cut-throat.
That is what he will tell Bosnich if the Australian international knocks on his door when the players report back for pre-season training today.
Ferguson wants Bosnich to react in the same positive way United’s four strikers greeted the news of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s signing before the £18.5million deal fell through.
Ferguson said: ‘‘It’s not unusual for players to say they are unhappy about a club signing players.
‘‘But nobody here dropped dead or put their hands up in horror when Ruud van Nistelrooy was signed initially. Our strikers reacted in the best way. They saw it as a challenge and realised that that is what Manchester United is all about.’’
He told the Manchester Evening News: ‘‘My job as manager of United is to get the best players. It’s hard to see a position at this club where a player is not challenged these days and you have to have that.

Sacked Chelsea keeper Bosnich invited to Socceroos squad
tribalfootball.com - February 6, 2003
Soccer Australia have invited sacked Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich to Frank Farina's Socceroos squad. Only 24 hours after an appeal against his sacking was thrown out by a Premier League tribunal, SA have come to the aid of Bosnich by offering this lifeline. "From day one Soccer Australia has privately offered any assistance possible to Mark's representatives," a Soccer Australia spokesman told the Daily Telegraph "Now if he wants to join the boys for dinner or come to the match at Upton Park, Frank Farina and Soccer Australia would welcome him with open arms." "Throughout the whole affair, SA have been very supportive of Mark, which in itself is very positive," agent Leo Karis said. "I'll make sure Mark gets the invite."

    Bosnich to fight FA ruling
    First Published: Jan 10, 2003
Chelsea's Australian international goalkeeper Mark Bosnich will fight a Football Association misconduct charge which could end his career following a positive drugs test for cocaine. Bosnich was suspended from all football-related activities after being found guilty of breaching doping regulations and bringing the game into disrepute. He was given 14 days in which to respond to the FA charge and his legal team replied on Friday afternoon, shortly before the deadline was due to expire. His lawyers made it clear that the 30-year-old would be requesting a personal hearing and would be seeking to answer the charge against him. FA spokesman Adrian Bevington said: "I can confirm that Mark Bosnich's legal team have responded and they are contesting the charge." If Bosnich is found guilty of the FA charge at the as yet unscheduled hearing, he could receive a lengthy ban from the game. However, he maintains his innocence even though the onus is now on him to prove why traces of the drug were apparently found in his system in a random test.

Filed at: Friday, December 27 2002 01:23 PM Mark Bosnich has been charged with breaching the Football Association's doping regulations and bringing the game into disrepute after testing positive for cocaine. The Chelsea goal keeper has been suspended from all footballing activities until the two charges are heard, although no date for the hearing has been set. An FA spokesman said: "The FA can confirm that Mark Bosnich of Chelsea has been charged with breaches of FA rules E1 and E26. The FA would not normally make any public statements at this stage of a case of this type, however, in view of numerous media reports over the past few weeks the situation required clarification." The charges respectively relate to bringing the game into disrepute and to breaching the FA's doping regulations by testing positive for a prohibited substance, namely cocaine. He will be suspended from all football activities until the charges have been heard. He has until Friday, January 10 to respond in writing to the charges.

Filed at: 09:14 PM Chelsea signed Manchester United keeper Mark Bosnich on a free transfer this afternoon. Bosnich's United nightmare finally came to an end today when the champions terminated his contract. The Blues snapped up the Aussie within a few hours of Bosnich being released, increasing speculation that Dutchman Ed de Goey is on his way out of Stamford Bridge. The former Aston Villa man’s miserable tenure at Old Trafford concluded in humiliating circumstances, with United announcing the end of their two year relationship in a brief statement which read: “Manchester United can confirm that we have terminated Mark Bosnich's contract by mutual consent and, in doing so, we wish him well for the future.” The Australian, who had been hailed as a natural successor to Great Dane Peter Schmeichel, has struggled with consistency and injuries throughout his time at Old Trafford, with many of his stuttering performances characterised by embarrassing howlers. Bosnich arrived on a free from Villa in a blaze of publicity, with a reputation as one of Europe’s top keepers. He got off to the worst possible start with a hamstring injury in only his third game, and with Alex Ferguson’s signing of Massimo Taibi, it looked as if the Old Trafford supremo was having his doubts. But Taibi’s spectacularly poor form in just four games persuaded Ferguson to give him a recall, and although he survived until February, a poor display at Wimbledon tested Fergie’s patience once again.

United to sign French star Barthez
    First Published: May 30, 2000
Manchester United hope to complete the signing of French World Cup winning goalkeeper Fabien Barthez today. Barthez won the French championship with AS Monaco in April but was in Manchester last night to follow up United's offer of a six year contract worth more than £15 million in wages. With a transfer fee expected to top £10 million, Barthez will become the most expensive goalkeeper in history as the English champions continue to search for Peter Schmeichel's definitive replacement. Danish captain Schmeichel won the Portuguese championship in his first season with Sporting Lisbon and will play in Euro 2000 next month but his loss by United has seen them flounder in the search for a suitable replacement. Australian international Mark Bosnich was signed on a free transfer from Aston Villa last summer to take over from Schmeichel but United were soon active on the continent looking at Parma star Gianluigi Buffon before buying Massimo Taibi in a then record £4.5 million transfer that went quickly wrong. With Bosnich injured, Taibi was found wanting and blamed foe several autumn defeats before being loaned out to Reggina where he remains. Bosnich and Raimond van der Gouw contested the goal keeping position while United scanned the European leagues.

    Real Madrid Manchester United
    First Published: Apr 04, 2000
After 144 group matches and qualifying rounds that started last July the knockout stage of the Champions League started with holders Manchester United earning a draw at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. This even game saw United become the likelier winners as time passed with Real failing to beat goalkeeper Mark Bosnich when they did manage to gain ascendency in the tie. Bosnich was equal to a fierce free kick from Roberto Carlos in the opening seconds of the second half and a 72nd minute shot from Savio but the game failed to deliver on the attacking promise of the first 45 minutes and the match petered out to a scoreless well tempered draw. The sides cancelled each other out and Real failed to take their home advantage and and turn it into goals. David Beckham failed to shine in the first session. He was faced with runs from Savio and Roberto Carlos down the Real left flank and the Brazilian pair had all the time they needed to control the play on that side of the pitch. The twin wide threats in the Real team pattern of McManaman on the right and Savio on the left came close to dominating the early stages of this match.

ENGLAND Farina backs Bosnich London: Australian coach Frank Farina has said Mark Bosnich still has a future in elite soccer despite his legal fight against drugs charges suffering a major setback. "In terms of a goalkeeper, Mark's still very young ... he's still got a big future in the game," Farina said. Bosnich lost an appeal to the Premier League on Tuesday over his sacking by Chelsea, and although he can take the case to a Football League committee, his best chance appears to be to go to a civil court. His legal team is expected to make a decision within days. Bosnich's chances of a favourable Football Association hearing next week for breaching its doping code look slim and he faces a year's ban. ENGLAND Viduka loses ban appeal London: Leeds United's Australian striker Mark Viduka will serve a three-match domestic ban after losing his appeal against being sent off in the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Gillingham last month. Viduka was shown the red card for violent conduct after catching Gillingham's player-manager Andy Hessenthaler on the head with his elbow. He will still be available for Australia's friendly against England next week. FRANCE Marseille coast to top of table Paris: Olympique Marseille joined Monaco on points at the top of the French first division with a 2-0 win over lowly Le Havre on Wednesday. Russian striker Dmitry Sychev scored a 16th-minute goal and in-form Belgian defender Daniel Van Buyten made it two in the 53rd minute to become his team's leading scorer on six goals. Neighbours Nice, level on points with Marseille at the start of the evening, dropped to fourth place after losing 1-0 at bottom-placed Troyes.
