SAVIN GRACE Hunky Mexican Goalie JoRgE CaMpoS helps keep the new U.S. soccer league on its feet.- Soccer fans at the Rose Bowl are on their feet. Not a single goal has been scored, not a shot taken. Indeed, the day's doubleheader-the U.S. national team vx. Mexico national team, followed by the Los Angeles GAlaxy against the Tampa Bay Mutiny-hasen't even started: 90,000 people are screaming their heads off during the warmup period. The object of their hysteria? Jorge Campos, 29, the quicksilver goalie for both Mexico and the Galaxy, a national hero in his homeland and, after just six months, a hero in L.A. Campos deardeavil play hasn't just helped make Los ANgeles one of the powers in Major League Soccer-the team will be heading into the playoffs starting Sept.24-it has made him a superstar in the new 10-tean league. "Jorge", says Mike Sorber,25, a U.S. National Team midfielder for the Kansas CIty Wiz, "is like the Michael Jordan of Mexico. He's one of the top goalkeepers in the world. He has a lot of flair and charisma. Campos's fan appeal outshines even that of teammate Andrew Shue, a former Dartmkouth standout whose job is as a heartthrob on Melorose Place. And Campos, who grew up in Acapulco on his well-to-do parent's cattle ranch and whose first love was surfing, speaks only a little English. Through an interpreter, he is quick to profess puzzulment at the fans, many or them young women, who sometimes mob him. "I have always thought," he says, "the people who really are famous are the movie stars. It excites me. It gives me chills." Campos's very athletic, very unorhtodox playing style has the same effect on his opponents. He has all the hair-trigger reactions needed to play goal, but he also has the speed and dribbling ability of a forward. In fact, he's quite capable of switching jerseys and playing forward-as he did during the second half of the Tampa Bay game-a display of versatility that is almost unheard-of in soocer. "Jorge's been very important to the league and to the team in many ways," Sunil Gulati, MLS's deputy commisioner, told the Los Angeles Times earlier this year. "We wanted to send a message about acquiring an attacking, entertainig player, and even as a goalkeeper he does that." A high-wattage Campos will be needed to keep MLS from suffering the fate of the previos attempt to introduce pro soccer to the U.S.The North AMerican Soccer League, started in 1968, fizzled out in 1985. Since signig with the Galaxy in June 1995-the eight year pro still plays for Mexico City's Club Atlante-Campos has spent much of his time on the road or traveling to rejoin Mexico's National team, for wich he has played about 60 times. So far, he has had little time to spend with his girlfriend, an aspiring model who lives in Acapulco. In October, after the Mls playoffs, he will return to Club Atlante, for which he will play until the GAlxy begins its season next year. Campos also has several lucrative endorsment contracts, including a deal with NIKE, which markets a brightly hued lino of Jorge Campos goalie uniforms. Despite his wealth, however, Campos lives un a modest, sparsely furnished apartment in L.A.'s Westwood section. For fun, he pals around the wee hours with Galaxy teamm- ates Jorge SAlcedo and Guillermo Jara. "Jorge never wants to sleep at night," says Salcedo, 23, a midfielder. "He likes to have a good time. The unique thing is that he doesn't drink at all, he doesn't smoke at all. His favorite drink is orange juice." If he ever OD's, his friends add, it'll be on Häagen-Dazs. "He always asks for ice cream," says Jara,22, a forward. "That's pretty much his diet." Adoration? All the ice cream he can eat? Sounds good to Campos. "I love Los Angeles. I would love to continue playing here," he says. "Soccer has been very good to me."

by John Manley
Los Angeles, California
On April 13, Major League Soccer debuted in Los Angeles. A crowd of 69,000 witnessed a 2-1 victory by the Los Angeles Galaxy team over the New York/New Jersey Metro Stars.
The Galaxy features many talented players including the flamboyant Jorge Campos and Andrew Shue (that former good guy turned bad boy on the popular U.S. TV series, "Melrose Place"). But it was the Iranian Arash Noamouz who scored the game winner for the Galaxy. Noamouz is 28 years old, former member of the Iranian National Team , who lives in Houston, Texas. His soccer experience in the U.S. was gained as a player in the indoor soccer league in 1994 and 1995. He recently earned a bachelor's degree in textile engineering. He spoke to
The Iranian:
Q: How did it feel to score the winning goal in the second half of the game?
NOAMOUZ: It was great. It was our first game and all the players felt a lot of pressure to win. We had a 1-0 lead but that was not enough. Once I scored the second goal all the players felt relieved. After that we could play in a much more relaxed manner.
Q: Will you continue to play for the Iranian national team?

MLS-dominated squad ready to take on mixed Mexican side in Wednesday friendly in Denver.
By Robert Wagman
SoccerTimes
(Monday, April 1, 2002) The United States men, comprised almost totally of players from Major League Soccer, take on a combined Mexico "A" and "B" team in Denver Wednesday night in a match hastily arranged for Spanish-language television. The 10 p.m. (ET) game between World Cup qualifiers will be aired only on Telemundo which recently entered into a new long-term deal with the United States Soccer Federation. U.S. coach Bruce Arena has called in only two players based in Europe defenders Frankie Hejduk of Bayer Leverkusen in Germany and Greg Vanney of Bastia in France. Mexico coach Javier Aguirre has assembled a somewhat curious squad with a mix of starters, players who still hope to make the World Cup roster, and some older players who will not be going to South Korea and Japan, wbut whose presence will spice up the telecast. Anschutz Entertainment Group, which operates six of 10 MLS teams, and the new MLS promotional arm Soccer United Marketing (SUM), want to become the U.S. promoter of Mexican national-team matches, as well as package television rights for its games. The growth of this relationship can be seen in Wednesday’s doubleheader, which will open with an MLS match between D.C. United and the host Colorado Rapids, both AEG teams, as well as a Mexico-Bulgaria friendly April 17 at Giants Stadium, home of the MetroStars, another Anschutz MLS entry.

DENVER (December 4, 1995) Soccer excitement arrives in Mile High Stadium beginning Sunday, April 21, when the Colorado Rapids take on the Dallas Burn in their Major League Soccer home opener. The Rapids' 1996 schedule features 16 regular-season games at Mile High, including eight Sunday afternoon encounters, most starting at 2 p.m. MDT. In addition, the Rapids will host two exhibition matches at Mile High against international competition. The Rapids open the MLS season on Saturday, April 13, at Kansas City before returning home to face, Dallas and its superstar striker, Mexico's Hugo Sanchez, on April 21. "When we open our inaugural season on April 21, Mile High Stadium will play host to the most exciting soccer ever played in Colorado," said Colorado Rapids General Manager Richard A. Levine. "Major League Soccer will showcase the finest players from the United States as well as recognized stars from all over the world. The thousands of people who play soccer in this community will now get to see their sport played by the world's greatest athletes in the United States' only Division I league." MLS has already signed more than 120 players, including 1994 U.S. World Cup stars Alexi Lalas, Tab Ramos, John Harkes, Tony Meola, Mike Burns, Mike Lapper and the Rapids' first assigned player, Roy Wegerle. In addition, international stars like Mexico's Jorge Campos and Hugo Sanchez and Bolivia's Marco Etcheverry will join several other prominent World Cup stars from South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. Each team will be allocated up to four world-class stars. A player combine will be held in late January and the league's inaugural draft will take place in early February.

, Inc.(since 1990)(SoccerNews OnLine WARNING! Prior Permission from MLS is required for ANY use of Logos, photos, trademarks, etc! Rich Levine , Colorado Rapids General Manager Byline: Jon DeStefano Earlier this month, we had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Rich Levine, the new General Manager of Colorado's new Major League Soccer team, the Colorado Rapids. Rich comes to Colorado straight from World Cup '94 Marketing, where he served as General Manager and General Counsel. Rich brings with him to Colorado not only a sterling reputation amongst the national soccer community, but also his wife Kim and three children, Michelle, Miriam and Jesse. Here's what Rich has to say. Jon DeStefano: Let's start with the big picture. Tell me about Major League Soccer (MLS). Rich Levine: Major League Soccer is an outgrowth of the World Cup '94 mission. With World Cup we had two goals: first, to host the best World Cup in history, and second, to leave a lasting legacy for soccer in the United States. The World Cup showed everyone that, given the chance, U.S. players can compete with the best players in the world, and that, given the chance, the fans would embrace that quality of play. Major League Soccer is the fulfillment of our World Cup goal to leave a legacy of top-caliber soccer to players, coaches and fans in the United States. To me, the most critical aspect is that we are "Major," and in that regard we are pleased to have been selected by USSF and FIFA as the only Division I soccer league in this country. We have begun signing the players and coaches to prove that we deserve Division I stature, and are indeed Major League Soccer. MLS players such as Alexi Lalas, Tab Ramos and Jorge Campos, all of whom have played at top levels internationally, will provide fans what they expect-exciting soccer at its very best.
