COLUMBUS, Ohio - Behind the first career MLS goal from 22-year-old Taylor Twellman, the New England Revolution registered their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Columbus Crew 2-0 at Crew Stadium. The last Revolution win over the Crew in Ohio came on July 11, 1996, as New England had lost nine straight road matches against Columbus coming into the game. The Crew, now 0-3 at home to start the 2002 season, are off to their worst start in team history at 1-3-0 (3pts). Revolution Head Coach Fernando Clavijo made some tactical changes to his squad, featuring a new forward tandem consisting of Mamadou Diallo and Twellman, who was making his first career MLS start. The duo immediately paid dividends when they teamed up to open the scoring in the 10th minute.

Sports Vue Team Network: PPV Sports Kristine Lilly Monday, October 7th 2002 METROSTARS SELL DIALLO TO SAUDI CLUB AL AHLI SECAUCUS, NJ - The MetroStars and Major League Soccer announced today that striker Mamadou Diallo has been sold to Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli.
Per MLS policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Diallo will join Al Ahli this week.
Diallo joined the MetroStars on Friday, May 24 in a record six-player deal with the Revolution, and notched 11 goals and four assists (26 points) in 17 games. He ranked second on the team in goals scored behind Rodrigo Faria (12), and was voted Honda MetroStars MVP in voting by media who regularly cover the team.
“Mamadou was a terrific player for us this year, and he helped provide us with some tremendous offensive power,” said MetroStars President/General Manager Nick Sakiewicz. “But this was a deal that was certainly good for Mamadou as well as good for the MetroStars, as it will free up a senior international slot on our roster as well as provide us with a lot more salary cap maneuverability as we begin to rebuild our team into the MLS Cup contender we know we should be.”

Columnists Dances with sting rays along St. Pete Beach Sunday, June 10, 2001 ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. My trip to the white coastal beaches of Florida this year not only gave me a much-needed burst of energy and a reconnection with my offspring, but also a new dance step. So it was called the "sting ray shuffle." There was no accompanying music, but I did learn the steps to perfection. Slide, shuffle, slide, shuffle again. Result? Lots of sand between my toes. Sting ray season is from April to October, and I spotted many of the strangely designed creatures as we took our daily walks along the water. They come close to shore at times. I had just left the water after floating happily for 15 minutes or so, and when I looked back, there was a ray in my space. I let him keep it. I'm told they don't attack you unless you step on them, which is why you shuffle down to Buffalo when your feet are in water.

History
When the 1994 World Cup tournament was awarded to the United States, US Soccer promised to help establish a Division I outdoor soccer league as soon as possible after the tournament ended. World Cup USA Chairman Alan I. Rothenberg announced plans for Major League Soccer (MLS) on Dec. 17, 1993. Twenty-two cities submitted bids for teams. In October of 1995, it was announced that MLS would begin play in March of 1996 with ten teams: the Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, D. C. United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, MetroStars, New England Revolution, San Jose Clash, and Tampa Bay Mutiny. The Chicago Fire and Miami Fusion were added as expansion teams in 1998. The MLS originally had two conferences, but was reorganized into three divisions, with four teams each, in 2000. However, the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny were dropped before the 2002 season, and the league went back to the two-conference format. The MLS did away with the penalty shootout in 2000. If a game is tied after regulation time, the teams play two five-minute overtime periods. If the score is still tied, that's the final result.

Chung Doubles Up on Awards Chung added two goals to the Rapids' total for the second week in a row. NEW YORK (Monday, June 3, 2002) - Colorado Rapids midfielder Mark Chung was selected as Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for the week ending June 2, 2002. For the second time in as many games, Chung scored twice, as Colorado posted a 3-2 victory over Western Conference rival Los Angeles Saturday afternoon in Denver. The veteran also captured the award last week after scoring two goals in a 5-2 win against New England on May 22.
Chung netted his fourth goal of the season in the 42nd minute against Los Angeles, beating Galaxy goalkeeper Matt Reis from the top of the box to knot the score at 1-1. Rapids forward Chris Carrieri handled the ball well in tight space near the penalty arc, freezing the defense with a crisp pass to Chung. The reliable flanker released the ball quickly, snapping a shot past Reis and into the back of the net. The two teams then traded goals to make the score 2-2, until Chung smashed home the game-winner in the 76th minute for his second goal of the afternoon and fourth in two games. Rapids defender Jeff Stewart carried the ball in from midfield, dishing the ball forward to Chung near the top of the box. With a quick two-touch release, Chung unleashed another long-range shot to beat Reis. Chung's shot from twenty yards out flashed across the face of the goal and settled in the side netting, giving Colorado a 3-2 win.

Carrieri Scores Weekly Award Carrieri scored the team's second hat trick ever, one year to the day after John Spencer notched the first. NEW YORK (Monday, July 8, 2002) Carrieri scored all three of his goals after coming on at halftime for defender Jeff Stewart. The former North Carolina standout evened the score at 1-1 in the 57th minute, completing a give-and-go play with midfielder Mark Chung. Chung and Carrieri traded passes around the penalty area to free Carrieri, who sent a blazing shot past Chicago goalkeeper Zach Thornton to knot the score. With Colorado trailing 2-1 in the late stages, Carrieri took control of the game by scoring twice in a five minute span. In the 82nd minute of play MLS all-time assist leader Carlos Valderrama sprayed a pass to the right wing finding Wes Hart. The midfielder slipped, but regained his footing and fed Carrieri at the top of the box, where the second-year striker sent a chip into the upper right side netting to knot the score at 2-2. Five minutes later, Carrieri finished off the natural hat trick when his 20-yard blast into the lower right corner beat a diving Thornton for the game-winner in the 87th minute. Carrieri has 15 points on six goals and three assists this season.
