Diallo puts fire into game, feud
After a four-goal game and more penalties from MLS, the Mutiny forward is ready to prove himself.
By RODNEY PAGE Mamadou Diallo is at it again. Not only does it appear Diallo is back to his scoring ways after a four-goal performance against Los Angeles on Wednesday, he's renewed his feud with Major League Soccer. Diallo is upset that the league disciplinary committee tacked on an extra game suspension for his hard tackle on Metro-Stars defender Mike Petke and shoving Steve Jolley in the aftermath of the April 21 game. Diallo said his way of getting back at the league was to score as many goals as he could. "It's tough for me because of what has happened with the league," Diallo said. "Everybody knows I didn't deserve the red card. That's the situation. The league has more power than me. (Wednesday) was the time for me to show them and the fans what Mamadou is really like. "That was very good motivation for me. I was very mad at the beginning of the season because I didn't have many goals. But now Mamadou is back."

REVOLUTION'S HEAD COACH STEVE NICOL NAMED MLS COACH OF THE YEAR
NEW YORK, NY (October 16, 2002) - Major League Soccer announced New England Revolution Head Coach Steve Nicol as the 2002 MLS Coach of the Year Award. Despite carrying the tag of interim head coach, Nicol led his surprising squad on an improbable run to the Eastern Conference Championship. The MLS Coach of the Year is an annual award given to the League's top coach as determined through votes cast by MLS coaches, general managers, players and members of the Professional Soccer Reporters Association. After assuming the reigns of the Revolution on May 23 after the squad stumbled to a 2-4-1 start, Nicol proceeded to guide New England to a 10-10-1 record, which included a six-game unbeaten streak to close out the season. Under Nicol's direction, the Revs completed a phenomenal rise from the bottom of the table to the Eastern Conference Championship and the second seed in the MLS Cup Playoffs. The Revolution continued to rally under their interim head coach in the postseason, possibly removing the uncertainty of Nicol's contract status with an impressive march to MLS Cup 2002. With voting for the award completed before the end of the MLS Cup Playoff Quarterfinals, the Revolution's successful playoff run was not a factor in voting for the honor.

The loss of the two Major League Soccer franchises was thought of as hurting the league's seventh campaign, possibly revealing a weakness in the league. As a result of ceasing operations in Florida, both the Tampa Bay Mutiny and Miami Fusion were left to dealt employees from their offices and relocate the footballers that once called this football hotbed home. The bi-product of the cut from 12 sides to 10 was a better game.
In previous years, the quality footballers were spread throughout the country. Matches often depended on the franchise's key footballer. Following the dispersal draft, teams gathered quality footballers since there weren't as many sides for them to join. The New England Revolution side was probably the best example of a team gaining from the dispersal of the Florida footballers. New England was able to take scoring power: Mamadou Diallo, U.S. National Team member: Carlos Llamosa, Steve Ralston, 2001's MLS leading scorer: Alex Pineda Chacon, Jay Heaps, and MLS veteran: Jim Rooney. Though they lost to a strong NY/NJ Metrostar side, the Revolution will be a contender for this year's MLS Cup after the footballers play with each other more.
The Metrostars who had a good foundation with footballers such as U.S. National Team keeper: Tim Howard, U.S. National Team forward: Clint Mathis, 1997 Rookie of the Year runner-up: Ross Paule, 2001 Rookie of the Year: Rodrigo Faria, and former William and Mary standout: Steve Jolley; picking up Diego Serna will help the team's midfield in their quest for MLS 2002. Sports Illustrated had picked New York/New Jersey to win this year. The team has the players to succeed but the way they place depends on how the team does during the stretch in June where they lose players to their respected national team side.

BC goalkeeper Danny Caruso was tested right off the bat, stopping two shots in the opening minutes. Mamadou Diallo, the 2000 MLS scoring champion, put a shot right on net several minutes in, but Caruso stopped the low blast. Minutes later, Ted Chronopolous broke through the Eagles' backfield for a one-on-one attempt with the netminder, but Caruso came out to break up the play. Patrick Buhlman, a Swiss international, scored first for the Revs in the 25th minute. He flicked in a cross off a restart from Joe Franchino and scored on a shot inside the right post.

The midfielder, who was acquired on July 12 and has two goals, took off his sock to reveal a layer of tape and pre-wrap covering his ankle and foot. He winced in pain as trainer Josh Watts rewrapped it and asked him if he was OK to practice. O'Brien put on his shoe and valiantly limped back into the scrimmage.
