Friday 2nd August 2002
By Danny Kazandjian Paul Gascoigne"s US dream ended yesterday with the player, his agent and the interested party agreeing by mutual consent to break off negotiations. It is a poignant milestone in the 35-year-old Gazza"s" chequered career that as he was departing the United States capital after training with dcu for a week as it was feverishly promoting itself as the number one football town in the United States. As he departed, stage left, Washington DC was preparing itself for the incoming mls All-Star game and all its associated paraphernalia. The three-day All-Star weekend starts today with the MLS Soccer Fest" in nearby Germantown and continues with a host of activities culminating in the All-Star game proper at RFK Stadium on Sunday. Gone are the days when Gazza is part and parcel of any such celebrations of football excellence. The former efc, ran, lazi and thfc star had arrived in Washington on July 24 to cast his eye over what he hoped would be his last club. But yesterday those talks were called off and the player who most recently ran out for promotion-seeking bur in the English n1 was on a plane back home to his beloved north-east. "Both United head coach Ray Hudson and Paul Gascoigne have mutually agreed not to pursue a contractual obligation for the remainder of the 2002 MLS season," United technical director Dave Kasper said on the club's official website.

Rod Stewart Apologises For Drinks With Gascoigne
Reuters VETERAN rock singer Rod Stewart has apologised for joining England midfielder Paul Gascoigne on a drinking spree last month. Gascoigne was dropped from England’s final World Cup squad last week because of doubts over his physical fitness. In an open letter to The Sun, Stewart said he had met Gascoigne by accident in a London restaurant. “If I could turn back the hands of time, I wish we had never run into each other that night,” Stewart wrote. “Had I known the outcome I would have said: ‘No drink for you tonight Paul’. But try telling Paul Gascoigne he can’t have a drink.” Stewart, a fanatical Scotland supporter, was offered free tickets if he sang Flower of Scotland before his team’s opening match against Brazil on Wednesday. In a newspaper interview he said he had decided to pay for his own tickets so he could relax and get drunk.

US Keeper Writer Off England Without Gazza
England without Paul Gascoigne are not serious contenders to win the World Cup, according to the United States’ English-based goalkeeper Kasey Keller. Although he said he understood Glenn Hoddlès decision to leave the enfant terrible at home because of his failure to get fit, Keller said Gascoignès absence had left England too short of creativity in midfield to contemplate going beyond the quarter finals. "A fit Gascoigne would have definitely helped England, no doubt about it," the Leicester City keeper told AFP at the US World Cup base in Francès Beaujolais region. "If you look at the squad you have to say where is that guy who can unlock defences and put the Shearers, the Sheringhams and the Owens in. "Someone like Gascoigne can skate past two people and put that great ball in. "I don’t think a David Batty or a Paul Ince can play that role. They can be very important for England but not in that Gascoigne role." In the absence of Gascoigne, England would have to look to its wide players getting behind defences and providing the kind of quality crosses that Shearer thrives on, Keller said.

FA pile on the agony for Gascoigne after he breaks forearm
by Damian Spellman
PAUL GASCOIGNE’S woes increased yesterday afternoon when he was charged with misconduct by the Football Association for elbowing George Boateng.
The 32 year old broke his forearm in a wild lunge at the Aston Villa midfielder during Middlesbrough’s 4 home defeat.
Gascoigne was taken by stretcher off the pitch in agony, but his pain looks set to become even more acute after disciplinary bosses decided to act following a viewing of video footage of the incident, which happened shortly before half time. The FA released a statement saying: “Paul Gascoigne has been charged with misconduct as a result of an incident involving George Boateng during Middlesbrough’s home game against Aston Villa last night.
‘‘In reaching the decision, the Football Association is acutely aware that, sadly, Paul sustained a serious injury himself from the incident. Everyone within the game will wish him a speedy recovery.
‘‘However, we are committed to investigating allegations of violent play in the interests of the game as a whole. Having viewed video footage of the incident, we believe there is a case to be answered. He has 14 days to respond to the charge requesting a personal hearing if required.’’ The charge, just 24 hours after the FA called Leeds, Spurs, Chelsea and Wimbledon to book over weekend incidents, is the latest blackspot in Gascoigne’s chequered history as the stock of a player who once promised so much plummets.

(posted Mar. 25, 6:38PM EST) As Paul Gascoigne jogged on to the pitch to represent the First Division Burnley Clarets I was moved to tears. Tears of laughter, that is. Is this what Gazza's career has come to? Is he now content to serve the role of promotion-inspirer for struggling clubs? If so, it's a farcical end to a roller-coaster career. Granted, Burnley's No. 34 (which is also his age) didn't play that badly in his debut (until he forgot the meaning of indirect and hammered a free kick six-feet over the bar), but let's think relatively here. This is the First Division and Gazza was once a world class footballer. I was swept away by the charismatic Gascoigne and his assault on the world of football some 12 years ago at Italia '90, and I stared in disbelief as one of the most famous incidents in English football history played out on the pitch there. I am speaking, of course, about the Gascoigne booking in the semifinal versus Germany, a booking that meant if England advanced to the final their young star would not. Tears flooded Gazza's face, and a nation cried with him.

Gazza extends trial with Chinese club
Wayward soccer star Paul Gascoigne is extending his trial period with Chinese club Liaoning Bodao and if he comes through it he will be signed, club officials said.
But the former England international is under orders to get his act together, the Soccer Daily newspaper said on Thursday.
The paper quoted club officials as saying they recognised the publicity Gascoigne could bring the club but they were not prepared to waste their money.
His wage demands however were realistic, officials said.
The ex-Newcastle and Lazio star is understood to have been offered one million yuan ($US120,000) a year, a far cry from his heyday and the money now being paid to the top players in the world.
"At the moment it is very difficult for Paul to play in the Chinese league but after a period of extra training, and if he can satisfy the requirements of the team, we can buy him," the club's general manager Cheng Penghui was quoted as saying.
Club president Cao Guojun said he would be signed if he improved his fitness.
