Gunners on all cylinders
Arsenal 5

by Mark Bradley
AS statements of intent go, it was a truly inspired performance by champions desperate not to surrender their crown.
For while Chelsea may have meekly surrendered any realistic title ambitions against Leicester, Arsenal made it clear they would push Manchester United to the limits in defence of the Premiership.
Instead of stuttering to a halt like Chelsea on Sunday, after seizing a 2-0 lead through Ray Parlour and Patrick Vieira, the Gunners destroyed Wimbledon in a devastating three-minute period.
An own-goal by Ben Thatcher, a strike by Dennis Bergkamp to help erase the painful memory of his FA Cup penalty miss last week, and a tap-in by Nwankwo Kanu all sent a clear warning to United ahead of their trip to Juventus.
For Arsenal not only closed the gap on the Premiership leaders to a point - even if they have played a game more - they also narrowed United's previously huge advantage on goal difference to manageable proportions.
Just as they had done in holding United recently, the Dons were seemingly intent on securing a draw, with midfielders Stewart Castledine, Ceri Hughes and Robbie Earle rarely moving from their shielding role in front of the back four.

Del Piero fires Juve to victory
Striker's hat-trick too much for game Monaco as Turin titans reveal pedigree
Juventus 4
Monaco 1
AN INSPIRED Alessandro Del Piero scored a set-piece hat-trick as Juventus crushed Monaco last night to virtually book themselves a place in their third consecutive European Cup final.
The Italy striker put Juventus ahead after 33 minutes with a breathtaking freekick from 25 metres after Zinedine Zidane had been clobbered by Martin Djetou, a foul which earned the defender a booking. Del Piero stepped up and sent his inch-perfect right-foot shot fizzing and curling into Barthez's top right-hand corner.
A lively Monaco side equalised on the stroke of half-time through Francisco Da Costa, ironically with a little help from Del Piero, who was back in his own half defending a corner.
Juventus half-cleared the danger but the ball fell on the edge of the box to Da Costa, who had only been on the pitch five minutes as a replacement for the injured Christophe Pignol. The Portuguese midfielder rifled in a shot that spun off Del Piero's outstretched leg and beat Italy goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi to make the score 1-1.
Juve responded immediately, launching an attack from the kick-off in a determined bid to restore their lead.

Treat those Scratches Italy stumble into second round Simon Evans Three times champions Italy narrowly avoided joining France and Argentina on a plane home after being outplayed by group winners Mexico but a late equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw on Thursday. Jared Borgetti appeared to have sealed Mexico's first ever victory over Italy with a moment of blinding skill in the 34th minute when he glanced an angled header into the top corner of the net from a chipped pass by Cuauhtemoc Blanco. But five minutes from time, substitute Alessandro Del Piero rapped home from close range to rescue Italy from a dispiriting defeat and put them in the second round. The match ended in farce when both teams, knowing the result in the other game with bottom placed Ecuador beating Croatia 1-0, played keep-ball for the four minutes of injury time.

By Simon Hooper, SI.com Real Madrid turned its Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Manchester United into an artistic performance on Tuesday. A 3-1 scoreline hardly reflected the reigning European champion’s dominance over a side that perhaps thought it had a better chance than most of deposing it. United will claim it only needs a 2-0 win back at Old Trafford on Wednesday week to reach the semifinals but Real’s winning margin could be measured in more than just goals. Turned inside out by the slick interplay inspired by Raul, Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane, United’s players seemed mentally broken as they left the pitch, having been subjected to the soccer equivalent of shock and awe. They will go into the second leg more fearful of suffering further humiliation in front of their own home crowd than hopeful of using that support to turn the tie around. United’s desperation was summed up by defender Gary Neville, perhaps secretly relieved to be suspended for the return match after picking up his second yellow card of the competition.

Quite a proud moment for us here at Soccer Gaming and particularly for our network site FIFA 2000 Online which has received column inches in this month's PC Gamer. Their 'Netware' section, endorsed by The Online Gamers Association , had this to say about F2KO's superb modem database:
'Finding a game of FIFA 2000 online used to be difficult, but not anymore. SoccerGaming.com's modem database contains details of some 8,000 users who can be tracked down by e-mail or ICQ, qith information on a player's country, county and even city. With plenty of UK-dwelling players, it won't take long to find a suitable opponent and get a match going. http://www.fifa2000.net/multiplayer/
This Week At Soccer Gaming
Posted by Drinky Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated (What a great line that would be if Mark Twain hadn't said the same years ago). I've been rather conspicous in my absence from posting to the site in the last week or so, mainly because we've got some very special things coming up this week on Soccer Gaming as the build-up to the big Fall release schedule begins to head towards a climax. This week, we'll be posting our definitive previews of the two big guns on the management and action fronts, Championship Manager 00/01 and FIFA 2001 , and poking past the press releases to get at the juicy game meat inside. Saturday 7th September 2002
By Oliver Thompson Those who felt that this summer's World Cup in Japan and South Korea was the beginning of a sea change in international football were silenced this afternoon, as normal service was resumed - for now at least. Though the established powers struggled in the Far East back in June, as the qualifiers for Euro 2004 got underway today there was a palpable sense of familiarity, with the old order returning to form. Germany, Europe's best representatives at the World Cup finals, maintained what captain Oliver Kahn had called 'the tailwind' with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Lithuania. Michael Ballack's good form continued as he opened the scoring for Rudi Voller's side, and when Lithuanian defender Marius Stankevicius headed the ball into his own net on 58 minutes victory for Germany was assured. Deposed world champions France had a far tougher workout against Cyprus in Nicosia. Jacques Santini's first competitive game as coach got off to a nightmare start as France conceded an early goal and had to wait until five minutes before half time to pull level. A second half strike from Sylvan Wiltord secured a victory for Les Bleus, however, they will draw little comfort from a nervous and uncertain performance.

Vieri's hat-trick propels Inter Milan
MILAN, Italy (Agence France Presse 08-29-1999 18:43 EST) Christian Vieri showed why he is the world's most expensive footballer on Sunday, bagging a hat-trick on his debut for Inter Milan, as AC Milan and Juventus both ran into trouble. Vieri, the 50-million dollar man, secured a 3-0 win over Verona, but two other Serie A newcomers caused upsets with Lecce holding champions Milan 2-2 and 10-man Reggina earning a historic point with Juventus. Reggina's first ever Serie A match in the club's 85-year history ended 1-1 in Turin, and there were identical draws for two of Juventus' other title rivals, Parma and AS Roma. The happiest fans in Italy were at San Siro where Vieri banished the nightmare of last season's disastrous campaign. All three goals came from long balls punted 30 or 40 metres upfield for Vieri to run on and score, starting in the 16th minute. Ronaldo, made to wait on the subs bench, replaced Ivan Zamorano in the secon half, but it was Vieri who continued to find the target, scoring again in the 53rd and 65th minutes.

Lazio's fairytale Despite their one-week stay in top spot ending this weekend, Lazio have been the surprise success story of the championship so far. Unpaid footballers, an untried manager, scintillating matches, unmatched enthusiasm and a team unbeaten for nearly twenty matches are the stuff of which fairy tales are made. Praise has been showered on the financially-troubled club from all sides; and Lazio really seem to have been living through an enchanted period. The Football in Rome Lazio Diary recounts the emotions from a fan's point of view.
