U.S. soccer success at Stanford
Appreciative crowd spurs USA to World Cup qualifying victory by Rick Eymer With Eric Wynalda turned cheerleader, and Joe-Max Moore getting a rest, USA soccer coach Steve Sampson turned to a pair of relatively new forwards to lead the Americans into battle in an important match against Costa Rica on Saturday in a World Cup '98 qualifying match at Stanford University. ``How do you spell relief? McBride and Lassiter," Sampson said. That's Brian McBride and Roy Lassiter, each starting for the first time in international play, and each scoring a goal to lead USA to a 2-1 victory. That clinched a berth in the final round of World Cup qualifying for the Americans. Wynalda, USA's all-time leading goal scorer, had to sit out Saturday's match because he received two yellow cards during earlier World Cup qualifying. Wynalda has scored nine goals in 13 games with the USA this season. Moore was rested by Sampson to give Lassiter and McBride a chance to play. It was a bold move that turned to gold. ``Throughout the time I've been here, and it's been short, the guys have given me a lot of confidence," McBride said. ``That made it a lot easier for me. The fact the game had such great meaning to it made it all the more special."

FIRE WINS HOME OPENER!
As a member of the Chicago Sting, Frank Klopas is the only visible link to Chicago's soccer past of 14 years ago when the last Division I game was played here. There was no need for nostalgia on Saturday as 36,444 fans saw the local boy net two goals in the FIRE's 2-0 victory.
Both goals came minutes from time at the end of each half and were virtually from the same spot, ten yards out. The first goal (43rd minute) developed from the right side as Zak Ibsen slid the ball to Klopas in the box and Klopas put it dead center but under a diving Thomas Ravelli.
The second goal (88th minute) came as Roman Kosecki beat his man on the left wing, took the ball to the end line and pulled it back to the penalty spot where Klopas calmly rolled it into the corner. The game turned in the 29th minute when the Mutiny's Chris Houser received a red card for a vicious tackle on Klopas. With the man advantage, Chicago out- possessed the Mutiny and created several chances as evidenced by their 22-5 shot advantage. Tampa Bay Coach John Kowalski said it best in the post game conference, "Chicago played much better than a first year team playing it's second game." In the first half, Chicago played the right side often, and were successful until they were within 25 yards of goal. Many players passed on shooting opportunities, while shots taken were grossly off-target. Right midfielder Zak Ibsen sailed four shots high and wide and didn't seem to make the most of his many touches, until his assist on the first goal.

Lassiter Gets His Kicks in the Nation’s Capital
by Bob Nevruz
Tobacco Road has always been known as basketball country. Three national powerhouse ACC universities heavy with basketball tradition reside within thirty miles of each other. Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, and NC State form the coveted triangle where people eat, drink and breath basketaball on a daily basis. The close proximity of the three previously mentioned institutions makes for some intense rivalries and for some storied traditions. The youth in North Carolina cannot help but to be enchanted with basketball at an early age. But a sport aside from basketball is also brewing in the triangle. Believe it or not, it’s soccer.
The North Carolina Youth Soccer programs have been providing the opportunity for both young boys and girls to enjoy this international sport for decades. In fact, one of the North Carolina youth soccer program’s most famous participants attributes his success to getting into the sport at an early age. Roy Lassiter who was born and raised in Raleigh, basketball country, was introduced to soccer as a child. It was easy to see that Lassiter honed his skills, his blinding speed, and aggressive play early on. Lassiter made the easy transformation from youth soccer to High School soccer without missing a beat. He starred at Athens Road High School in Raleigh and got the eyes of several major soccer programs. Lassiter decided to attend Lees McRae Junior College but after a very successful Freshman campaign there, he transferred to NC State. Roy Lassister went on to have an incredible three year career as a member of the Wolfpack squad.

Roy Lassiter
Bounty On The Mutiny
by Desmond Armstrong
Roy Lassiter thought this was his time to show the world just how "bad" a soccer player he really was. "I was the typical arrogant soccer player who was excited about the opportunity to play with the US National Team," Lassiter says. "To make that team meant everything to me. Obviously, I didn't have God in my life at the time." He didn't have God and because of one brief moment during a training session he no longer had a chance with the National Team. Lassiter was tackled from behind during practice and suffered a broken left ankle. There would be more setbacks. For instance, his father left his mother while Roy was in training camp. "I was discouraged and did not handle my situation well," he says. "My father was gone. My brother was off at school, and my mother was faced with the pressures of running the house alone. I had no job and no stability. I was just sitting at home, lost and upset with the world." As he sat and allowed the hurt to fester into anger, Roy decided to take matters into his own hands. He figured, "I had nowhere to go, so I'll just do what I like." He embarked on a short career as a party personality, then he moved from constant partying to breaking-and-entering. Through observing his mother's commitment to the Lord, he noticed that her bad situation became better and he wanted to know why. He went to church with his mom and brother (who had also become a Christian) in November 1995, and it was then that he was convicted by the Holy Spirit and received Christ as his Savior.

Virginia Beach – The Virginia Beach Mariners signed Roy Lassiter for the 2003 A-League season shortly after he was waived by DC United. During his seven-year professional career, Lassiter has scored 88 goals in 179 regular-season games, which makes him the all-time leading scorer in the history of Major League Soccer (MLS). In addition to being the league’s all-time scorer, Lassiter holds the MLS record for most goals scored in a single season (27 in 1996). With 13 goals in 21 post-season appearances, the thirty-three year old also holds the all-time record for most goals scored in MLS playoff games. Team owner Mike Field said “Roy Lassiter has been the best scorer in MLS since the league started in 1996, and remains a consummate box player with great instincts and tremendous physical talents.” “There are many brilliant technical players in both MLS and the A-League who we could have signed, but Lassiter scores goals and goals win games,” Field added. Lassiter started his MLS career in 1996 with the Tampa Bay Mutiny. After playing 60 games and scoring 37 goals (including seven game-winners) for Tampa Bay, Lassiter was traded to DC United for Roy Wegerle in April 1998. Lassiter jump-started DC United's attack and ended the 1998 season as the club's leading scorer with 18 goals in 25 games. The following year, Lassiter returned as the team’s leading scorer in the regular season, and then moved into the playoffs to score three goals and register the assist that won DC United the 1999 MLS championship.
