BOBBY MOORE, ENGLAND

The player who made British soccer mod, Bobby Moore's youth and leadership made England and the world of soccer a brighter place. Bobby Moore captained his teams to three titles in the 1960sWest Ham United in the 1964 FA Cup Final and the European Cup-winners Cup final. And, most importantly, with the English national team, the great victory over Germany in the 1966 World Cup. A fierce competitor, he marked Pele in 1970 World Cup in a heated battle. His endurance speaks for itself: 544 league appearances for West Ham between 1958-1974 and then another 124 with Fulham before retiring in 1976. He sadly died of cancer in 1993.

Welcome!!! My name is Mark Pennington..... UPDATED FEBRUARY 2003 For a long as the game has been a public spectacle, the players have had outrageous hairstyles. The recent World Cup was no exception.
From as far back as Sir Stanley Matthews's slick-back effort, soccer players have tried to show off their fashion sense with the state of their 'Barnet's'. We all remember Chris Waddles and Glen Hoddles 'Mullets' in 86, Kevin Keegan's shaggy perm in 82, and more recently David 'the style god' Beckham has filled the front page of many a newspaper on several occasions with his latest look. But why are we so interested in their hair? And I think, more importantly, how do they get their hair to look so full-bodied and shiny? Yeah right... There is only one question I ask you, who has had the worst hairstyle of all time? Here are my Top Ten Worst Haircuts of all time.

Knob Hill Farms
Canada's Pioneer of Regional Food Marketing Back in 1962, he opened his first Knob Hill Farms Food Terminal in the suburban Markham area of Toronto, which he quickly enlarged to 60,000 square feet. This was huge for then because the average supermarket of the major chains was under half that size. Many people in the industry thought Stavro had gone overboard, especially when he added a large tent outside in the summer months. But, Stavro was on to something it took other retailers years to see.

This turned out to be the beginning of a long and strong friendship with well-known Toronto sportsman Harold Ballard, who eventually became the major owner and CEO of Maple Leaf Gardens.

Oceania Soccer King Kenny And what, you may well ask, has this page got to do with The Ultimate New Zealand Soccer Website?
Well, three things - his goal against the All Whites in Spain in 1982 (see below) being the second of them!
First and foremost, though, Kenny Dalglish is the greatest footballer in the history of the game (at least according to this completely unbiased Liverpool fanatic!!), and, for mine, the footballer who set the standards by which all others are judged.
I was at Anfield for Alan Hansen's testimonial in May, 1988, and Liverpool were playing England, who were preparing for the European Championships later that summer. Half-time, England were leading the greatest football club in the world 1-0, and Ian Rush had already been on the park for fifteen minutes as a substitute for The Reds, replacing John Aldridge.
Out came the teams for the second spell, and on for Peter Beardsley was King Kenny - another life-time ambition realised, namely seeing Dalglish and Rush in tandem for The Reds in the flesh.

Soccer A Game of Opinions Or Is It?
Total Player Development (TM) Update
by Tony Waiters Tony Waiters is one of the world's most highly regarded soccer educators and innovators. A former English professional from 1959 to 1967 and National Team Keeper, Waiters also coached and managed the Vancouver Whitecaps to six consecutive NASL playoff appearances from 1977 to 1982. He was then appointed coach of the Canadian National, Team, guiding them to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. A great friend of mine, Verdi Godwin, says soccer is a game of opinions. Verdi and I first met when we were both lifeguards on my hometown beach (Southport, England). Verdi was an old pro just finishing his playing days. He guided me into professional soccer with Blackpool Football Club. He has been my mentor ever since. As an old-fashioned English centre-forward, Verdi knew plenty about goalkeepers, but from a different yet, important perspective. To back up his oft-quoted expression "soccer is a game of opinions" he would go on to name his own all-star team of top-class, in some cases, world-class players who had been rejected by clubs at some time in their careers. Discarded and discounted by one coach. Encouraged and elevated by another. It is a game of opinions. Yet, while Verdi is right, we are in the process of seeing if we can take the opinion out of soccer development. Through our Total Player Development program and by extensive collection of relevant data we hope to prove that certain methods and situations are better than others.

Aussie Rules Column - Postcards from the Edge Barry Edge is an exiled Valiant from Australia. He exclusively shares his memories of Port Vale with onevalefan readers.
Postcards from the Edge
Long before the days of the internet, and when the Australian tabloids reported only on the major world leagues and 'Cup competitions, information about my beloved Port Vale came mainly from my second eldest brother - who lives in Baldwins Gate, Newcastle-under-Lyme. Now my second eldest brother isn't one for lengthy communications, preferring the 'holiday way' of sending messages on postcards - sometimes in cryptic form. Almost all of us have sent one or two postcards in our lives extending holiday greetings from where ever we were enjoying ourselves. But nearly all of us would have put more than three or more words on those 'cards. His messages are always 'short and sweet'. Such as: 'Now the 'Vale', or 'Where's the banjo?'. The first, received in April 1993, was relatively easy to work out. The second, received in January 1994, required some research time on my part to finally understand. But more about those messages later. It all started following my brother's return to the 'Old Dart' after spending a holiday 'down under' in the early 1960s. He'd arrived unannounced in the early hours of a late summer's day at our home north of Perth, Western Australia. He told us he had come for a short holiday, that he was due back in England in two weeks time. The family reunion and celebrations that followed were breathtaking.

Very true that one and it applies equally to sportsmen, pop singers and film stars, but is especially true of football and footballers. My father used to take me to Ashton Gate every Saturday throughout the late 50's and 60's to watch Bristol City and, looking back through my rose coloured spectacles, they were great days and there were some great players. But in reality, I don't suppose football was any better (or worse) then than it is now. With certain exceptions.

Sir Stanley Matthews... Born February 1st 1915 - Died 23rd February 2000
Stoke-on-Trent's most famous son, Stanley Matthews was born in Seymour Street, Hanley, his father Jack was known as the "Fighting Barber" because the Potteries featherweight boxing champion also kept a barbers shop.
Young Stan spent many hours on spare ground, close to his home practising his soccer skills, little knowing that one day he would be regarded as Stoke City and England's finest footballer.
He was educated at St Luke's School, Hanley, and on Saturday mornings would help in his fathers shop, sweeping the floor for a few pence pocket money so that he could go to watch Stoke's rivals Port Vale.
But it was Stoke City that Stan joined at fifteen, and turned professional on February 1st 1932, Stan's seventeenth birthday. He became a regular first team player in the 1933/34 season.
His reputation as the "wizard of dribble" soon spread, football fans all over the country would flock to watch him and he filled grounds wherever he played. One match against Manchester City at Maine Road, Manchester attracted a crowd of 84,569 still a provincial record.
By 1939 Stanley Matthews was known as the worlds greatest footballer.
