Stanley Matthews remembered fondly by Limerick team mate
by Conor Keane
THE name of Sir Stanley Matthews is never far from the lips of Limerick motor school owner, Ewan Fenton.
Anyone who has learned to drive with Fenton will know that he and Matthews played in the same Blackpool side for 13 years and won the FA Cup together.
Yesterday, Mr Fenton was behind the wheel coaching young drivers on how to pass their test. But his mind was on the late Sir Stanley — the wizard of dribble.
Stanley Matthews, who died on Wednesday at the age of 85, will forever be remembered for that famous cup final in 1953.
He and Fenton were on the Blackpool FA Cup winning side of 1953 when Matthews brought the team from 3 1 down to a 4 3 win in what has become known as the Matthews Final.
“The whole of England was behind Blackpool that day, Stanley was 38 or 39 and had never won an FA Cup medal. Many thought it was his last chance and wanted one of the greatest players ever to win one.
“He did it in style and it was great to be there, feeding him the ball and to be able to watch him do what he did best — play football,” said Mr Fenton in Limerick yesterday.
Mr Fenton, who still runs his own driving school in Limerick at the age of 70, says the millionaire soccer stars of today are not as professional as he and Matthews were in their day, despite only being paid a maximum of £25 a week. “There was no drinking, no smoking on the premises, no dances from Wednesday night and bed at 10.30pm on a Friday night.

If it ever existed it was when this man played. Stan was himself aware the football world had changed and he had pretty determined views that in many ways it was not for the better. The outrageous wages, the poor sportsmanship, attacks on referees and tackling 'which is little short of common assault' were all things he felt were not part of the football he once graced. And you have to accept that in a career which spanned from 17 years to 50 years in which he was never cautioned once by a referee he might have a point. This was despite some of the tighest marking of any player ever in the game of football (but that is not to say the leg breaking tackles the modern game specialises in).

Sir Stanley Matthews
Sir Stanley Matthews was one of footballs greats. He was 85 years old and sadly died on Wednesday 23rd February 2000. Sir Stanley became footballs first knight. In all his career he never played for more than £5 a week, and he was NEVER booked or sent off. He became known as, "the wizard of the dribble". His funeral was on Friday 3rd March 2000, the funeral cortege took him round the edge of the pitch in a jam-packed Britannia Stadium, everyone had turned out to pay their last respects to the local man who started his career at the Staffordshire club. It then toured the streets of Stoke before going to the church for his memorial service. His ashes have been buried under the centre spot at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium.

No "comeback" by England legend Matthews
(c) 1995 Reuter Information Service LONDON (Jul 17, 1995 - 13:42 EDT) - Clevedon Town said on Monday that England soccer legend Sir Stanley Matthews will not be playing for them in a friendly match this month, contradicting an announcement they made on Friday that he would do so. "It's all become rather embarrassing," said Steve Fey, the manager of the minor league club from the west of England. "The idea that Sir Stanley might play was a very tongue-in-cheek comment after all, he is 80. However we do not want the public to be disappointed at not seeing him playing and Sir Stanley has asked me to clarify the position." Last Friday Fey said that Matthews, one of the all-time greats of English soccer and still fit and sprightly at 80, would play for them for 15 minutes in a friendly match against second division Bristol City on July 30. Fey met Sir Stanley when he spoke at a dinner in the Somerset town earlier in the summer. On Friday Fey said he asked Matthews to play in the match, addding: "It was a bit cheeky but as a joke I asked him if he would consider signing on as a player for us," said Fey.

What makes a soccer legend?
Hubert Vogelsinger
Vogelsinger Soccer Academy
What is a legend? A legend is someone grandparents and parents revere. They are the ones children ask about; names that live in the minds of generations. Superstars? No. The word is meaningless, worn smooth by a thousand glib TV tongues, and hacked to pieces on a million typewriters. A legend in a sport leaves his mark on the game. He transcends it. Playing well isn't enough. Winning isn't enough. Records aren't enough. It is only when a man seizes the game and shapes it, bends it, changes it by the force of will, skill, and body that he becomes a legend. That is what these five men did to soccer and that is why their names will live as long as there are soccer balls and people to kick them. Pele had skills and moves never before imagined; Sir Stanley Matthews, an innovator who raised dribbling to a high art; Lev Yashin, a new style of goalkeeper who brought "keepers everywhere out of their nets and into the games;" Alfredo di Stefano, the game's first truly complete player; and Nandor Hidegkuti, the tactical genius who opened the game up for latterday offensive tactics. Here's a closer looking at the soccer giants: Pele Sir Stanley Matthews He was Bob Cousy with a soccer ball. Matthews was a magician in baggy shorts who played for England's national team until he was 40, and was playing first division soccer well into his 50's. As a dribbler he could make the ball do everything but sing "God Save the Queen." You can still see his influence on players from World Cup to sandlot. The ball was merely an extension of his foot.

  • Pel© (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) (1940-) (Brazil-Forward) Also known as "the Black Pearl", Pel© led the Brazilian national team to three World Cup victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970 and to permanent possession of the Jules Rimet Trophy. In his professional and international career, he played in 1,363 matches and scored 1,282 goals. He made his professional debut with Brazil's Santos in 1956 and played with them until 1974. In 1975, he came out of retirement to promote the game in the United States by starring for the NASL's New York Cosmos, earning him 1976 NASL MVP honors; his retirement game in 1977 at Giants Stadium against his old club Santos drew over 75,000 people, the largest crowd to see a soccer match in the U.S. before the 1984 Olympics. He later became Brazil's Minister of Sport and, in 1999, the National Olympic Committees named Pel© the IOC's Athlete of the Century, despite having never partaken in an Olympic Games. Franz Beckenbauer (1945-) (West Germany-Sweeper) Nicknamed "Der Kaiser," Beckenbauer invented the position of attacking sweeper, helping him to become the only man ever to win the World Cup as both team captain and as manager (1974 as a player, 1990 as manager). Beckenbauer's first World Cup saw him help West Germany to the 1966 World Cup Final, where they lost to host England 4-2 at Wembley Stadium. 1972 saw West Germany win the European Championship and Beckenbauer named European Footballer of the Year. Two years later, Beckenbauer had one of the single greatest football years in history, captaining FC Bayern M¼nchen to the Bundesliga (German First Division), European Cup (now known as the UEFA Champions League) championships and West Germany to the World Cup, the nation's second triumph. In 1976, he left Germany for the NASL's New York Cosmos, where he teamed with Pel© and was named 1977 NASL MVP. He now serves as the FC Bayern M¼nchen club president.
