Lewis fires home for Preston A spectacular volleyed goal just two minutes from time from Eddie Lewis gave Preston a deserved win against Coventry City at Highfield Road. Calum Davenport looked to have salvaged a point for the Sky Blues with a towering 79th minute header from Gary McAllister's corner before Lewis' late volley. Richard Cresswell had fired Preston into a first half lead. The match pitched Coventry boss McAllister against Craig Brown, his former international manager for Scotland and now in charge at Deepdale. And it was the master who secured the early advantage over pupil when Cresswell fired Preston ahead after just seven minutes. Cresswell latched onto a pass from Ricardo Fuller to crash the ball home from 18 yards. Coventry battled to get back on terms and Jamie McMaster seemed to be in a good position to level matters after 13 minutes but he mis-hit his shot which flew over the bar. The lively Cresswell, however, almost doubled Preston's lead seconds later when his brilliant left-footed drive from 20 yards curled fractionally wide. But Coventry came back and, following a foul by Colin Murdock on Dean Holdsworth, the visitors somehow survived a ferocious spell of home pressure.

Tuesday, November 14, 2000 Liverpool jump back to third place with win LONDON Emile Heskey hit two goals as Liverpool jumped back into third place in the Premier League with a 4-1 beating of struggling Coventry on Sunday. In Sunday's other Premier League game, Chelsea and Leeds tied 1-1 at Stamford Bridge. Former Coventry playmaker Gary McAllister scored one and created two of Liverpool's goals at Anfield as Gerard Houllier's team, which had Michael Owen starting for the first time in a month, returned to form. McAllister netted his first goal for Liverpool since his free transfer from the Sky Blues before his free kick was headed in by Steven Gerrard. Coventry midfielder David Thompson halved the lead with a 30-metre shot against his former club before Heskey headed in a McAllister corner for his eighth goal in eight games. Heskey, likely to lead England's attack against Italy in Turin tomorrow, hit the fourth with an audacious chip over the goalkeeper from 20 metres. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, another star playing against his former club, appeared right out of luck at Stamford Bridge when he shot across the face of the goal and then had two shots blocked by Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson. Australian striker Mark Viduka, who netted four against Liverpool last weekend, headed Leeds in front from a Lee Bowyer corner in the 62nd minute.

Scotland looks for new skipper

The knee injury will keep McAllister out of the game for eight months. John Collins, Jim Leighton and Colin Hendry are the likely names to replace Gary McAllister as Scotland's football captain. McAllister has been ruled out of the World Cup finals by a knee injury. The Coventry midfielder limped out of a reserve game against Notts County on Wednesday night. It was a recurrence of a knee problem which has plagued him for several months. He is now booked to see a specialist on Monday. It is probable he will have an operation within the week. Early indications are that McAllister will be out for eight months. This means he will not only miss the World Cup, but the early qualifying games for Euro 2000. Scotland manager Craig Brown and the players offered their sympathy and support after hearing the grim news about the 56-cap midfielder. Brown said: "Of course it's a major disappointment for Scotland, but I think we should put the player first in this kind of situation. "You have to think of what it means personally to him and he's naturally very upset. So am I, and I know the rest of the people connected with the squad will be as well."
