Thank you for your encouraging words. Playing in the World Cup was an experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Unfortunately we weren't able to accomplish what we set out to do. (Advance at least to the second round). It is time for me to concentrate on our goals for the Crew season. We are in the midst of trying to get our legs back underneath us, and quickly too. We have three games in less than a week. It is important that we find our chemistry quickly. Again, thank you for the kind words.

McBride was part of the USA squad which exceeded all expectations at the World Cup to reach the quarterfinals and has now moved to Goodison Park on a three-month loan deal. The short-term contract will allow him to return to the Columbus Crew before the Major League Soccer season begins in April. The 30-year-old international, who scored twice at the 2002 Finals, has previous experience of working with Everton boss David Moyes at Preston, where he had a loan spell in 2001. Said, 23, who trained with the club in the summer and even played in part of the club's pre-season programme before returning to Al Ahly, is set to complete a deal to keep him on Merseyside until the end of the season. He returned to the Cairo-based club because Moyes had used up his transfer budget. Now however, Moyes has an option to buy the defender when his loan deal finishes in the summer.

B rian McBride, an Illinois native born in 1972, is a forward on the U.S. Men's Soccer Team. Hailed by many as the best American player ever, his six goals in World Cup play are the second most in U.S. history (www.ussoccer.com).
How long have you been playing soccer?
I've been playing since I was eight years old.
Who inspired you to play when you were a kid? Did you have any heroes or role models?
Really, no - I picked it up and played because of friends. I enjoyed being involved in team sports and making close friendships.
Did your parents push you to compete?
Not at all - my mom supported me in every way, though. I was very much a sports jock so she didn't have to push me in any way.
Did you play other sports as well?
Growing up I took lessons and played just about every sport you can think of!
How did soccer win out?
It really came down to deciding between baseball and soccer. Soccer won out because I enjoyed it more. Who was your favorite coach growing up? What did he or she expect of you? I was fortunate to have a lot of good coaches. They were all good in different ways, whether it was letting us have fun, not necessarily showing us the game, but encouraging us, and making sure we worked hard. I'd say my high-school coach, John Erford, was by far my biggest mentor. He was like a father to me. How did you feel about competition versus just having fun?

McBride converts dangerous pass to perfection
Click here for more on this story Posted: Sunday June 11, 2000 07:18 PM Al Bello/Allsport By Michael Lewis, CNNSI.com EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. It is considered perhaps the most dangerous pass in all of soccer. A player runs down either the right or left wing, takes the ball to the end line and crosses it back to an onrushing teammate. It's advantages are two-fold. The defense is forced to scramble back and sometimes can wind up out of position. None of the players' teammates can be an offside position because the ball was played from in front of them. The U.S. national team worked that play to perfection for its first goal of its 3-0 triumph over Mexico in the U.S. Cup on Sunday. "It worked out nice," said Brian McBride, who scored the goal in the 33rd minute, which was his 11th goal in 43 international appearances.
