Born: Tres Coracoes, Brazil, October 23, 1940. Pele became an international celebrity almost overnight as a result of his performances in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. There at the tender age of 17, he scored one goal against Wales, three against France and then two against Sweden in the World Cup Final. He missed the 1962 World Cup final in Chile through injury, but won his second World Cup medal in 1970 when Brazil beat Italy 4-1 in Mexico. In between Pele led his club team from the port of Santos to the World Club title in 1962 and 1963 and his presence made Santos the most famous club in the world until his first retirement in 1974. During his career he played in 93 full internationals for Brazil and in all first class matches scored a remarkable 1,280 goals, second only to Artur Friedenreich, another Brazilian, who holds the world record with 1,329. Pele's retirement at Santos in 1974 was thought to be final but in 1975 he stunned the world by signing for the New York Cosmos. His arrival produced a surge in interest and participation in soccer throughout the United States. Attendance at NASL games in which Pele played attracted record crowds. Other world famous players discovered the NASL and followed Pele to the USA including such international superstars as Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, Eusebio, Carlos Alberto, and George Best.

: I am certainly not writing off Brazil if I say that right now the countries who would be most people's favourites to reach the World Cup semi-finals are Argentina, France, Italy and England. To me these appear to be the teams in the best form in the run-up for the finals. But, of course, it is more complicated than that. In the second round the two top teams from Group A - which includes France - must play the the two top teams from Group F - which includes England and Argentina. Even if they all go through from their groups, at least one cannot even reach the quarter-finals, let alone the semi-finals. Maybe that is good news for Brazil because I expect to see a very different side in Korea and Japan compared to the one which struggled through the qualifying competition. Our traditions mean that Brazil in the finals are a very different force to Brazil in the preliminary matches or in friendlies.

Soccer World Cup: test your knowledge He is about to turn 62 and his life has not changed. He is regarded by many as an example of youthful and healthy spirit; a legend of the world of sports. Since 1995 he has served as Minister of Sports in Brazil. In that capacity, he has proposed several laws to protect professional soccer players and athletes in general. He continues to be involved with charities and social humanitarian causes around the world.
The memories of his first youth are a contributing factor to maintaining his spirit. One of the events that bring back the fondest memories, not only for Pelé, but also for an entire generation of soccer players, is the World Cup of 1970 in Guadalajara, Mexico. With players like Tostao, Rivelino, Zagallo, Clodoaldo, Jairzinho, among others, Pelé was part of a select team, never again replicated. Ney Blanco de Oliveira, Pelé’s personal agent in Mexico, and his friend for more than 40 years, describes him affectionately: “Edson (he never calls him Pelé) is not only the greatest soccer player the world will ever know, but he is also one of the most sensitive, generous and noble human beings that I have ever known."

Tweet! The opening whistle sounds. 90,000 loving fans filled a stadium in Brazil to see the worlds greatest soccer player, Pele, put on another show. They came to see the moves, the excellence, and the player we call Pele. The fans yelled and cheered when Pele got the ball. They knew that if anyone were to lead them into a soccer revolution, it would be Pele. If it wasn’t for his breath-taking moves, precise skill, and his never say die attitude, soccer may have never started in the U.S. Because of all this, we know that Pele is the greatest player to play the game and that soccer would never be at the level it is today without his influence. Pele was born in Tres Coracoes, Brazil on October 23, 1940. (C.B.1967 pg327) He grew up in Brazil. Pele’s dad, Joao Ramos do Nacimento, was a minor league soccer player. He started teaching Pele at a very young age. Pele dropped out of school in the fourth grade to play soccer and to take care of his brothers and sisters. At 15 Pele became the best player on the Bauru Club and by 16 he started for the Santos Club. By the end of that season pele was a legend throughout brazil. At age 18 Pele got his first taste of world attention when he scored the winning goal for the Brazilian National team in a win over Wales to win the 58 World Cup. (http://foxsports.com/soccer/stories/pele.sm1) Pele led Brazil to a successful defense of the World Cup in 62. (Sports Shots pg34) After a six year secret engagement, Pele married Rosemarie Cholby in February, 1966. (C.B.1967 pg328)

Brazilian newspapers are reporting Saturday that Pinton, who owns the rights to the Cosmos name and logo, is in the preliminary stages of exploration and has teamed up with Pele's Pro company to research their MLS bid. MLS officials were not immediately available for comment, but sources acknowledged that Pinton had contacted the league with regards to reviving the team and the name. In related news, the Canadian Soccer Association has thrown Toronto's name into the hat for MLS expansion, linking the bid with the development of a new 30,000-seat stadium in the city. The new stadium has been proposed alongside Canada's bid to host the 2007 Women's World Cup. Realsports Soccer
Name: Realsports Soccer Company: Atari Model #: CX-2667 Programmer: Michael Sierchio Year: Released? Yes Notes: This game not endorsed by Pele. While Pele's Soccer may have broken new ground in the field of celebration fireworks, it certainly didn't do much for video soccer. An overhead view representation of soccer with small blobs for players didn't help sell the 2600 as a sports system, in fact feeble early attempts like Pele's Soccer actually turned many sports fans to the Intellivision instead. Atari needed to get sports fans back to the 2600 and fast! Thus the RealSports line of games was created.
While most sports games used small players on a large screen to sense of perspective, RS Soccer went with large characters on a normal sized screen. To create a proper sized playfield, Atari used scrolling techniques to create the illusion of the player running down a large field (one of the first games to do so). Atari also created the "wraparound" feature where the characters wrap around from one edge of the screen to the other (unless they have control the ball of course). So if your character goes off the right side of the screen he will reappear on the left edge of the screen. This may sound a bit strange, but it works well once you get used to it and can be used to set up some interesting passing plays.

Click on the photo to enlarge! Pelé Soccer Champion Pelé was born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940 at Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil, the son of Celeste and João Ramos do Nascimento. His talent in the game of soccer was recognized early by soccer coach Waldemar de Brito, a former Brasiliam World Cup player. In 1956 de Brito took Pelé to São Paulo to try out for Santos Futebol Clube, a professional team. Pelé was accepted and played his first game on September 7, 1956 for the Santos team.
The following year, at age sixteen, Pelé joined the Brasilian national team under coach Sylvio Pirilo. In 1958 Pelé played in his first World Cup match. Pelé played in four World Cups: Sweden in 1958, Chile in 1962, England in 1966 and Mexico in 1970. Of these, Pelé won three World Cups, in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 professional games.
Pelé is given credit for stopping a war in Nigeria. When he played exhibition matches there, a 48 hour armistice was signed between the warring sides so both could watch the games.
Pelé played on the national team until 1971. He played his last game for Santos Futebol Clube on October 3, 1974. Pelé came out of retirement to play for the New York Cosmos in the United States. He is given credit for popularizing the game of soccer in the United States.
