He always tossed extra emphasis on the "so." To beat a defense, he said, is to be stamped an instant hero. And probably a rich one. At the other end of the field stood the two other heroes of Team USA's tense 1-1 draw with South Korea. Second-round chances The United States can advance to the second round:
* With a win or tie against Poland on Friday.
* With a loss if South Korea beats Portugal.
* With a loss if Portugal routs South Korea by more goals than the Poles beat the United States. Eddie Pope, a tour de force of ball hawking in the center of the U.S. defense, and goalkeeper Brad Friedel were the chief menaces against a Korean team that generally controlled matters.

D.C. United awards for the 2002 season
CHANTILLY, VA - Nick Rimando, Marco Etcheverry, and Eddie Pope were announced today as the recipients of D.C. United's club awards for the 2002 season. The awards will be presented at United's annual club seat holder dinner, to be held tonight at Maggiano's in Washington, DC. Rimando was honored as United's HONDA Most Valuable Player and the ADT Defender of the Year, his first awards from the club. Etcheverry was named the Budweiser Scoring Champion, and Pope was named the US Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year for his off-field work in the community. The HONDA MVP, the ADT Defender of the Year and the US Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year were determined through balloting of media members, while the Budweiser scoring champion is given to the team's leading scorer based on points, with two points for a goal and one for an assist. HONDA Most Valuable Player: In his first year with D.C. United, Rimando was the only United player to play in every single minute of the 2002 season, with a league-high 2,588 minutes in his 28 starts. While registering seven shutouts for the season, Nick kept the team's playoff hopes alive with an impressive command of the backfield. After his third shutout over LA, in week 15, Rimando brought on the attention in becoming one of six players recognized as the MLS Player of the Week on multiple occasions.

CHICAGO (January 22, 2003) —U.S. Men’s National Team manager Bruce Arena has chosen a 23-man roster that will train in preparation for the pair of upcoming games against Argentina and Jamaica. The U.S. will host two-time World Cup champion Argentina on Feb. 8 at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla., at 12 p.m. ET live on ESPN2 and Radio Unica, before travelling south to face Jamaica just four days later at the National Stadium in Kingston at 7 p.m. ET. Both games can be followed live on ussoccer.com's MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics. The domestic-based roster will resume training Jan. 26 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The team moves to Ft. Lauderdale on Feb. 6, and departs for Jamaica four days later. "We have opened 2003 in solid fashion, and now face two formidable opponents in Argentina and Jamaica,” said Arena. “The exposure of playing two strong teams in different environments provides an excellent challenge for our players, and adds seasoning to a group that is preparing for two major tournaments this summer.”

History
When the 1994 World Cup tournament was awarded to the United States, US Soccer promised to help establish a Division I outdoor soccer league as soon as possible after the tournament ended. World Cup USA Chairman Alan I. Rothenberg announced plans for Major League Soccer (MLS) on Dec. 17, 1993. Twenty-two cities submitted bids for teams. In October of 1995, it was announced that MLS would begin play in March of 1996 with ten teams: the Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, D. C. United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, MetroStars, New England Revolution, San Jose Clash, and Tampa Bay Mutiny. The Chicago Fire and Miami Fusion were added as expansion teams in 1998. The MLS originally had two conferences, but was reorganized into three divisions, with four teams each, in 2000. However, the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny were dropped before the 2002 season, and the league went back to the two-conference format. The MLS did away with the penalty shootout in 2000. If a game is tied after regulation time, the teams play two five-minute overtime periods. If the score is still tied, that's the final result.

Monday, October 21, 1996; Page C1 FOXBORO, Mass., Oct. 20-D.C. United's inaugural season was slipping and sliding toward a disappointing end. The deficit was two goals, time was ticking away, and the Foxboro Stadium playing surface had turned into a muddy bog from the nor'easter that had punished the region all day. But in an improbable finish that American professional leagues with decades of history surely would envy, United charged back to tie the Major League Soccer championship match in regulation, then won it on 22-year-old defender Eddie Pope's header in the fourth minute of sudden-death overtime for a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy. An infant season that began with the United losing six of seven games concluded with players and coaches, drenched to the bone, dancing deliriously and screaming for all of New England to hear. At the moment Pope's header settled into the net, the 54-degree temperature, the 30- to 50-mph winds and the four inches of rain that had fallen didn't seem to matter a bit. "We became a real team," Coach Bruce Arena said. "We started out in miserable shape [this season]. People questioned a lot of things. They questioned our character, and you saw what kind of character and heart this team has. They deserve to be champions in this league."

HOWARD, MATHIS NAMED TO U.S. ROSTER FOR MEXICO GAME MetroStars pair heads list of 16 MLS players named to 18-man roster
for April 3 game in Denver
SECAUCUS, NJ (March 27, 2002) - MetroStars forward Clint Mathis and goalkeeper Tim Howard were among the 18 players named today to the roster for the U.S. men's national team for its international friendly against fellow World Cup qualifier Mexico to be played this Wednesday, April 3 at INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver, CO. The match, scheduled for a 10 p.m. ET kickoff (Telemundo TV) is part of a doubleheader that will feature the Colorado Rapids hosting D.C. United in the first game. Mathis and Howard headline the 16 MLS players named to the roster for the Mexico game. Mathis notched both U.S. goals in this past Wednesday's 4-2 friendly loss at Germany, marking his third straight start for the U.S. in which he has registered at least one point since coming back from ACL surgery. Overall, Mathis has notched at least one point in six straight starts for the U.S., dating back to April 25, 2001. Howard, the 2001 Aquafina MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, earned his first full international cap on March 10 when he blanked Ecuador, 1-0, at Birmingham, AL in his first-ever appearance for the full U.S. men's national team.

M ONTHLY PRO TIP: Creating Triangles
    February 2001
Brought to you by Williams F.C. and Bascome's Pro Soccer School The following diagram illustrates the importance of creating triangles on the field as a means of maintaining possession. During the February 4th friendly match between the US and Colombia, the Americans effectively made use of triangles in order to maintain possession and work the ball out of the back. Frame 1 Sensing pressure, Chris Armas (#14) lays the ball back to Eddie Pope (#23), who is about 5 to 10 yards outside the 18 yard box. Pope then promptly lays the ball out wide to Carlos Llamosa (#16) as he is pressured by the Colombian forward. The three players have formed a triangular formation in order to create ample options for their teammates. Frame 2 As the Colombian player confronts Llamosa, he lays the ball into Armas. Armas finds himself surrounded with very little space, so he lays the ball back, once again, to Pope. Again the triangle allows them to maintain possession.
