Pope signs long-term contract extension HERNDON, Va. (April 27, 1998) - D.C. United and U.S. national team defender Eddie Pope has agreed to terms on a long-term contract extension with Major League Soccer, United President and General Manager Kevin Payne announced Monday. Terms of the deal are not public, but it is a multiple-year extention that will keep Pope in Major League Soccer and in a United uniform well into the next century. "Everybody's very proud of what Eddie Pope has accomplished in our uniform," Payne said. "Two years ago at this time he was a young player right out of college, fighting for a spot on the Olympic team. Today he's become the defensive mainstay of D.C. United and the U.S. national team, which speaks volumes about Eddie's abilities and dedication." In his two-plus years with United, Pope has played in 68 matches in all competitions, scoring seven goals. He was named Major League Soccer's Bic Tough Defender of the Year last season. His goal in MLS Cup '96 in extra time gave United their historic come-from-behind 3-2 victory vs. Los Angeles Galaxy to win the first Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy. He received his first full cap while with United, making his international debut Nov. 10, 1996 vs. Trinidad and Tobago. He's made 20 appearances with the national team, scoring three goals.

MAKING HIS MOVE . . . Eddie Pope of D.C. United has learned fast that performance over talk can do wonders for this U.S. World Cup participant. CALL photo by Donald Smith
By Tracy Allen Eddie Pope doesn’t do a lot of talking but that’s okay. Pope doesn’t need to run his mouth; he lets his skills do the talking. For seven seasons as a defender with D.C. United of the Major League Soccer, Pope has shown that talking does nothing to your game. But, stellar defensive performances night in and out does a lot for your ego. Pope prides himself on being the best defender on the team. Fortunately for this Guilford, N.C., native, those performances has been the key to why he has played in two World Cups and an Olympics.
EDDIE POPE CALL photo by Donald Smith "Steady Eddie is our defensive of strength and composure. Cool, calm and collected with or without the ball, he is indomitable and needs to be inspiring at the back to ensure our success," said D.C. United Coach Ray Hudson.

Pope, Berhalter Named to World Cup Team Former Tar Heel defenders will play for U.S. in Japan, South Korea. April 23, 2002 Former University of North Carolina men's soccer stars Gregg Berhalter and Eddie Pope both were named to the 23-man 2002 United States World Cup team, head coach Bruce Arena announced on Monday. The two defenders both have started games for the U.S. team during its 2002 qualifying campaign. Pope, who lettered at Carolina from 1992-95, will be making his second World Cup appearance, having started three World Cup games in 1998. A regular with the U.S. team throughout the last decade, Pope missed portions of the 1999 and 2000 seasons with a variety of injuries but has re-emerged as one of the squad's top stars. Pope scored the USA's only goal in a 2-1 loss to Ireland earlier this spring, heading home a corner kick for the score. He is a key member of D.C. United of Major League Soccer and one of America's top on-the-ball defenders.

... News story EA Signs up the Pope! Major League Soccer all-star Eddie Pope for FIFA 2000, that is. July 28, 1999 - Not only did EA sign Eddie Pope, but it announced today that it signed a four-year deal with MLS for the interactive licensing rights to MLS players, teams, uniforms and logos as well. Eddie Pope of D.C United, an intellectual giant, prophesized, "It's an honor to join the other great athletes who consult with EA Sports to make the world's favorite sports videogames. I've been a big fan of the FIFA Soccer series of video games for years, so I can't wait to see myself and the rest of the MLS players in FIFA 2000: Major League Soccer." The real pope, however, was displeased with Eddie. "Eddie always missed church and was a slacker by nature. Thank God that he amounted to something. What? He plays soccer for as living? Jesus Christ, what a blowhard!" All joking aside, FIFA 2000 looks like it's going to be a real winner, sock check out the link below for more information.
