Pieter appeared in the golden TV show on Dec-26 together with 6 other Olympic gold medal winners. The same Dutch TV channel (Nederland 2) will show a documentary of Pieter on Dec-31 at 7pm. Pieter has just been chosen sportsman of the year 2000 in holland for the second year in a row! SPYKKE® Swimming dutch stars Inge DE BRUIJN and Pieter van den HOOGENBAND were named "Wolrd Swimmers of the Year" by Swimming World Magazine. The duo were also named "European Swimmers of the Year"; the other honored swimmers was Brooke Bennett, "American Swimmer of the Year", and Lenny Krayzelburg with Tom Dolan who shared honors for the American male swimmer. Aussie Ian Thorpe, who has "World Swimmer" honors in 1998 and 1999, and Susie O'Neill were named "Pacific Swimmers of the Year". Insweep Inge de Bruijn and Pieter van den Hoogenband will start their preparation for next year's World Championships in Japan. Since FINA introduced the 50m event for every stroke De Bruijn will try to be the first swimmer to win five individual titles at the Championships considering adding the 200 butterfly to her programme: "I'm not really sure yet and I have to talk it over with my coach" she said. While her teammate van den Hoogenband will try to lower his 100 and 200 free world records: "My swims at the Games weren't perfect, I made mistakes; if I train as hard as I did for the Olympics then there's no reason why not," he said. "I'm also thinking adding the 50m butterfly. There's always going to be pressure on me to win but it doesn't worry me I'm just doing it for myself."

Aquatics Water Polo Women’s water polo was one of the new events at the Sydney Games. When one plays water polo, the players are prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool. There are four seven-minute quarters, and water polo players may swim up to five kilometers in a single game. One must have the endurance and technique of a wonderful swimmer, a football player’s skill in passing, dribbling and shooting for a goal, and a rugby player’s strength to battle for the ball. Water polo started as the aquatic version of rugby. It began in the mid-1800s in England, before it started evolving into an aquatic resemblance of football (soccer). It had become so popular in Europe and North America, that it became an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games in Paris. Tall and long-armed athletes excel in this sport because 85 percent of the body is under water. The body is also about 85 percent submerged with all of the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling, and yanking of bathing suits, which makes the game even tougher. Only eight teams qualify in the women’s division, while twelve teams compete in the men’s division at the Olympic Games.

Human body hair absorbs 15 times its own weight in water. Traditionally, swimmers let their arm and leg hair grow all season long to provide resistance during training, then shave it off right before a major meet like the Olympics. The physical and mental effect makes the swimmers feel as if they're sliding through the water much faster.

U.S. Relay Teams Stage Golden Finish

The United States swimmers capped an astounding performance in Sydney Saturday with gold medals and world record performances in the men's and women's 400-meter medley relay. The wins gave the U.S. team a total of 14 gold medals, cementing one of the strongest showings ever in an Olympic pool. Jenny Thompson earned her tenth career Olympic medal in the women's relay, and the American team of Thompson, Megan Quann, B.J. Bedford and Dara Torres obliterated the previous world mark by nearly three seconds, finishing in 3:58.30. Thompson now holds more swimming medals than any other woman, and her eighth gold means she's alone in second place among female Olympians in any category.

    TEAM PROFILES: Pool Sharks
By Randy Franz, appeared in the October/November 2000 issue of REAL SPORTS magazine. Incentives change with age. Most 18-year-olds, you give them a new pair of shoes and a couple of CDs and they'll go through a wall for you. It's not until later that they learn they can command a better price. So today, on the eve of the Olympic Games in Sydney, the U.S. swimming team, by dint of its members' ages, has evolved from candy apple tastes to the fine palate borne of maturity. A perfect example is Amy Van Dyken. She didn't have to go for gold in 2000. Van Dyken, 27, already made her mark on the sport, becoming the first U.S. woman to win four gold medals in a single Olympics in the '96 Games. She also won world championships in 1998, and, since then, had shoulder surgery twice. It seemed the right time for Van Dyken to pack it in and start learning the ski slopes near her home in Littleton, Colo. Then her fiancé, pro football player Tom Rouen, upped the ante in a most material way. With Van Dyken's arm in a sling and her motivation on life support, Rouen appealed to her need for speed. He offered to buy her a Porsche Boxster if she got back in the pool and made the Olympic team. "Well, OK," Van Dyken responded. "That'll get me out of the sling." She realizes it sounds a bit crass to have a new car be the goal rather than the lofty ambitions of Olympic participation. But when you make a 50-minute drive every day to the training pool, as Van Dyken does, having new wheels is a biggie.

AP Swimming has always been one of the glamour events at the Olympic Games, but a nation's love of the pool and a sport going through revolutionary changes have stepped up the stakes in 2000. Indeed, the Aquatic Center is THE place to be in Sydney. "I can't wait to get to Australia," said American swimmer Kristy Kowal, who swam at the Sydney pool during last year's Pan Pacific meet. "The fans are incredible. Swimming is treated like the NBA or NFL in this country. When you walk into the pool, it's so loud. The atmosphere is electric." Dolan in the 400 IM.
AP Clearly, the Americans face a daunting task as they head Down Under trying to maintain their place as the world's best swimming nation. The United States has lost the medals race only twice in the last 48 years, most recently at the 1988 Seoul Games, which is also was the last time the Olympic trials were held in August rather than March.

9:03PM, Sep 22 Dynamic Dutchwoman Inge de Bruijn clocked the 12th world record in the pool at the Sydney Olympics tonight in the 50m freestyle semi-finals. De Bruijn smashed her own world record, clocking 24.13s, to set herself up for her third gold medal of the Games tomorrow. The 27-year-old hacked 0.26s off her old standard of 24.39 set in Rio De Janeiro in June. She's already won the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly at the Games. ''The Year 2000 is my year,'' de Bruijn said. ''I'm in great shape. ''I don't know where my limit is and I don't want to know.'' If de Bruijn can win the gold medal tomorrow, it will put even more pressure on Kieren Perkins to win the 1500m freestyle final and keep Australia ahead of the Dutch on the gold medal tally.

4:58PM, Sep 23 Her mission completed, Dutch wonderwoman Inge de Bruijn turned, punched at the air and hung on the lane ropes smiling. And why not, for she had just collected her third gold medal of the Sydney Olympics with victory in the women's 50 metres freestyle. It did not come with the world records that had decorated her wins in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly but she was unlikely to complain. The Dutch sprint queen will take a golden bounty back home. De Bruijn took out the one-lap dash at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre in a time of 24.32 seconds, a tick outside the phenomenal world record of 24.13 she had set in Friday night's semi-finals.
