June 1995 SWIMMERS TAKE TITLE By Liz Dalton
Michigan Today Intern As "Hail to the Victors" blared triumphantly in the background, the Wolverine men's swimming and diving team stepped forward to accept the NCAA championship trophy March 25. It was U-M's 11th NCAA title in all sports, tying Ohio State for the most all-time national championships ever, and U-M's first since the basketball title in 1989.
"This victory was not just for today's team," said swimming coach Jon Urbancheck '61, who was also named NCAA Men's Coach of the Year. "Since '85 we've gradually been climbing a step higher each year, and all those kids have worked to allow us to take this final step. This championship is for the people who've helped to build this team for the past 10 years.
The swimming and diving team was truly ready for such a victory; this was their first title since 1961, when Urbancheck himself captained the winning team. In this year's championship meet, the Wolverines led from start to finish, beating three time defending champion and arch rival Stanford, 561-475. Auburn nipped Texas for third. The Michigan team was led by sophomore long-distance freestyler Tom Dolan of Arlington, Virginia, and senior sprint freestyler Gustavo Borges of Barbosa, Brazil; the All Americans were the only two swimmers at the meet to score a perfect 60 points. Dolan not only won all three individual events in which he participated, but set collegiate and national records in every single one, earning him the honor of being named 1995 NCAA Swimmer of the Year.

They came, they fought, they conquered. With a third-place ranking going into the 1999 NCAA Championships, the Tigers went to the IU Natatorium on the prowl, looking to bring the NCAA title back to the Plains. Finishing second in 1998 in their home pool left a sour taste in the mouth of the Auburn men and made them hungry for victory. However, with no divers available, Auburn was going to have to fight for every point they earned. Having at least 39 teams and 250 athletes entered into the competition, AU knew that this would be no easy triumph. Head coach David Marsh believed the key to Auburn’s success would rely on the team leaders taking charge as well as the freshman stepping up to contribute to the team. Auburn made their presence known early as the Tigers swam a time of 1:16.50 in the 200 free relay during prelims, setting a U.S. Open, NCAA and NCAA meet record. That energy and enthusiasm set a pace that would catapult the Tigers through the rest of the meet. "On the first day, our goal wasn’t necessarily to set a record. Time wasn’t the issue, we just wanted to get our hand on the wall first and get our 40 points," team captain Aaron Ciarla said. "We were just focusing on one session at a time. We just went out gunning for it."

Tickets tough to come by, but 'M' Olympians make toil worth it
    By Susan Dann
    Daily Sports Writer
"Sure, I'm going to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta," I brag to my friends as I proceed to tell them that my brother miraculously snagged four tickets to the men's basketball gold medal game, among other tickets my family toiled to apply for and ultimately received. Applying for spectator tickets to the Centennial Games was tiresome physically, emotionally and mentally. I even heard some people say you had to be a Harvard graduate just to understand the ticket application. (I had no idea that the Olympic Ticket Committee would have any way to verify that my brother really is a Harvard grad.) I considered myself lucky to get any tickets, let alone the varied selection which I now have in hand. My Olympic training is now complete. The hard work has paid off. My gold medals? A ticket stub and a wooden stub, once a pencil, worn down from my many attempts at the application. So my friends gaze at me with the look of a runner-up glancing enviously at the first-place spot atop the award podium. Unfortunately for some, their training just wasn't enough. Hours of mental preparation and elbow grease in the application process may not have translated into ticket success. The lottery process used to determine ticket recipients this year proved that training does not necessarily translate into victory, or, to put it in context, finding a seat in Atlanta. The family of swimmer Summer Sanders, a three-time gold medal winner at the 1992 Barcelona games, was not even able to secure tickets for their daughter's potential events at the Atlanta games.

Michigan swims well but cannot repeat as champion
    By Doug Stevens
    Daily Sports Writer
AUSTIN, Texas A common formula for success in coaching is to work with what you have. Members of the media often encourage coaches to speculate as to "what would have happened" had a certain absent player been available. Although he would never admit it, at this past weekend's NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek must have pondered the impact that numerous athletes from last year's winning squad might have had on his current team's performance. Urbanchek brought only 11 athletes down to the Lone Star State, his team lacking entrants in seven different events (two sprint freestyle races, two breastroke events and three diving competitions). The weekend culminated with the defending champions finishing a distant third (358 points) behind winner Texas (479) and runner-up Auburn (443.5). Urbanchek undoubtedly must have considered how the meet's events might have gone differently, had the Wolverines still possessed eight-time All-American sprinter Gustavo Borges, breaststroker Steve West, diver Abel Sanchez and freestyle/IM swimmer Owen von Richter. As a result of these athletes' absence, Michigan's 11 swimmers were all forced to step it up for the team to compete with the other top programs, all of which possessed a full lineup.
