1999-2000 SWIMMING AND DIVING RECAPS
Agate October 21, 1999 Georgia Swimming and Diving Sweeps UNC To Open Season CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -Georgia's No. 1 Lady Bulldogs and the No. 8 Bulldogs opened the 2000 swimming and diving season with a pair of resounding victories over North Carolina at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium on Thursday afternoon. Georgia secured 23-of-28 first place results to kick off the meet before exhibitioning the last four races, finishing with final scores of 177-98 for the women and 174.5-117.5 for the men. "We swam really well today," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "We're raw in some areas, but we have the makings of a pretty good team. Both our men's and women's squads should be formidable as the season goes along. This was a great way to get things started we're proud of our team and are looking forward to meeting Florida next week." "Every time we go into a meet, we have something to defend this group of seniors has only lost one meet on the women's side and two on the men's through their four years here. That puts us among the top in the nation in dual meet competition."

In the morning prelims, Thompson broke another long-standing Mary T. Meagher record, swimming a 59.80, which dropped Meagher's 1985 meet record. Prior to finals, Meagher made a surprise appearance to give Thompson with a gift and say a few words in front of the San Antonio audience. January 14, 2000 Talk about this story The second-ranked Wildcat women's swimming and diving team will have its shot at national recognition today when it hosts defending national champion and No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs. UA head coach Frank Busch said the meet will give his swimmers and divers a chance to measure their performance against the nation's best. "The Bulldogs are well deserving of their number one ranking and this is going to be a good test for our team," he said. "This meet is going to be filled with abundance of close races, which will determine the winner." Both teams enter the meet with an undefeated record. Arizona (5-0, 1-0 in Pacific 10 Conference) last competed at the University of Texas at Austin Invitational, where they finished with 28 NCAA Tournament qualifying times and two new American records en route to the tournament title.

NCAA award caps 'perfect' year for Kristy Kowal
By Adam Minichino

Assistant Sports Editor Kristy Kowal isn't an athlete who has allowed doubt to slow her down.
But Sunday night at the awards dinner for the 2000 NCAA Woman of the Year in Indianapolis, Ind., Kowal said she had a few moments of apprehension as she read through the biographies and the accomplishments of the other nine other nominees.
''I totally didn't think I had a chance to get it,'' Kowal said. ''I was just there to have a good time and to enjoy myself. It was such a shock.'' But anyone who has followed Kowal's career wasn't surprised when the Olympic medalist and former Georgia swimming All-American was named the NCAA Woman of the Year. The award honors outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community service. Kowal's list of accomplishments is significant. Not only did she win a silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the Sydney Olympics, but the Wyomissing, Pa., native holds eight American, one world and three U.S. Open records, including the 200 breast.

200 Medley Relay Team Breaks American Record at NCAA Championships
March 19, 1999 ATHENS, Ga. "I think we're in a decent position," Stanford Coach Richard Quick said. "Georgia has a great day tomorrow. We have a good day tomorrow. It's going to come down to the team that wants it the most." The Gabrielsen Natatorium has been so fast that the pool record has been broken in every event contested, but Fox and the Cardinal relay squad became the first and second to break American records at the meet. The medley relay team of freshman Shelly Ripple, freshman Whitney Leatherwood, sophomore Misty Hyman and junior Gabrielle Rose won the 200 medley relay in 1:37.77 to capture the NCAA title, breaking the NCAA record, set by Stanford a year earlier, by .03 seconds. The mark broke the American record by .79 seconds. "I think it was the fastest 50 butterfly that I've ever done," said Hyman. "The team energy really carried me. I think it's a real special team. It's a different energy than I've ever felt before."

Stanford tops again
Stanford has won its sixth consecutive Sears Directors' Cup, which is a measure of the overall quality of the nation's intercollegiate athletic departments. Georgia, which finished second to Stanford a year ago, came in at No. 12 for the 1999-2000 academic year. The Cardinal earned a total of 1359.5 points, fueled by two national championships (men's tennis, men's outdoor track) and five second-place finishes (baseball, women's tennis, women's golf, women's volleyball, water polo). Other Stanford teams placing in the top 10 were women's cross country (3rd), women's swimming and diving (3rd), men's cross country (4th), fencing (4th), men's swimming and diving (4th) and women's soccer (9th). Georgia also won two national championships (women's tennis, women's swimming and diving), and posted top 20 finishes in women's gymnastics (3rd), women's basketball (5th), men's swimming and diving (15th), and football (16th).
